What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Might Belong At Dragon Con If ...

This coming weekend John and I are heading to Dragon Con, one of the world's largest sci-fi, comicbook, fantasy, and pop-culture conventions. For four blistering days more than 50,000 geeks will flood downtown Atlanta, and oh yes, IT WILL BE GLORIOUS.

Maybe you've heard about Dragon Con before and wondered if it was right for you. If so, then allow me to help:

10 Signs You Belong At Dragon Con:

- You've ever celebrated an Xbox achievement with cake:

Xbox Cake Wreck: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED

- You prefer your inscriptions in binary:

Alternatively, this reminds you of Flight of the Conchords' "binary solo."

- Mistakes like this fill you with nerd rage:

"Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?"

(And bonus points if you get the reference.)

-  Speaking of mistakes: you also know that Spider-Man is spelled with a dash, Lucasfilm only has the "L" capitalized, and "Wookiee" has two Es - unless you count the original novelization, which is technically canon, but if you're up for arguing this with me then you're pretty much making my point.

"LET THE 'WOOKIEE' WIN."

- You think zombie wedding cakes are awesome:

"More like The Walking WED, am I right? Eh? EH?!"

- You occasionally forget your friends' birthday, but never H.P. Lovecraft's:

Now that's darkly dreamy.

- You once drove somewhere with a giant Dalek cake strapped into your passenger's seat:

(Why yes, now that you mention it, these ARE getting oddly specific...)

-  The recent news of Ben Affleck being cast as Batman caused you real emotional turmoil:

It's like a match made in Gotham's Malibu Dream House.

- Or maybe you don't care so much who plays Batman because WHEN THE HECK DO WE GET A FEMALE SUPERHERO MOVIE?!

Ahem.

And finally, you belong at Dracon Con if:

- You have a favorite Doctor, are now afraid of angel statues, and/or have at least three close friends who NEED this cake for their next birthday:

 via

(That's obviously not professional, but I figured you'd forgive me, just this once.)

My favorite Doctor is Peter Davison, btw, and he's going to be there this weekend, so I just may fangirl all over his shoes. Would it be terribly stalkerish if I brought him a bouquet of decorative vegetables? (I also dearly love Sylvestor McCoy, who is ALSO there, and a mutual friend offered to introduce us, and SQUEEEEEEE excuse me I may need to lie down for a moment...)

See you this weekend, fellow geeks! (And follow my tweets if you'd like to say hi!)

Thanks to Jessee, Amy L., Jennifer M., Anony M., Liliya, Sam H., Suzanne S., & Brian L. for helping me geek out with my geek on.

Is it just me, or does that Wonder Woman cake look like a shout out to Ben Affleck? I do believe he's been cast in the wrong role...

Sooooo jealous! Peter (Tristan, Five, Campion) Davison!

I'm counting down to the Nashville Wizard Con and Stan Lee.

I'm concerned about that Dalek cake strapped into the car. Specifically, frosting on the upholstery! And how the heck is it not getting crushed by the seatbelt? Am I ignorant of special cake physics?

I just teared up at this post and the comments. LOL Where were you people when I was a little girl in need of a geek gang?? (don't answer- some of you weren't born!) The only cake that doesn't do it for me is the first one but I've never had a game console...

Peter Davison is Tristan and Campion to me. Tom Baker was the first Doctor I watched (first run on PBS, no less). Hated Sarah Jane- thought she was snotty. I don't have just one Doctor but Christopher Eccelston did make me fall back in love with him again!

Next year, I hope to get new knees so maybe DragonCon 2015 I'll be able to go! I've never been to a con but walking's an issue for me and my friends warned me that even in O-Town renting a little scooter would be futile as the crowds are so thick.

Double dumbass to you! ;)

Huh. I just re-looked at Chewie, and now I think that his expression is showing (A) a little apprehension,(2) a little excitement, or (C) he's got gas.
(I'm "borrowing" the alpha-numerical lysting sistem from someone else, just for the time being.)=^-.-^=

Peter Davison is my favorite doctor--twice over! If my pets' vet looked like Tristan Farnon, they would get "sick" a lot more often! ;)

Holy Leaning Tower of Pieces...That last one..yeesh! That dang thang is like 20 stories tall!! And it's just about as ugly as anything I've seen in at least--well, today. I don't know HOW it can call itself "lazy" though; that is a very energetically hideous baked item*. [*The-Artist-Formerly-Known-As baked "goods"] =^e.e^=

PETER DAVISON!!1 NERD SQEEE! He's my favorite too, followed closely by Tom Baker (the quintissential) and David Tennant. Have fun & drool on some Dr's for me...

Krista: I don't get how the Dalek cake works either. And one short stop should exterminate it.
Sharyn: http://www.bing.com/translator supports Klingon, and the few words I know seem to translate correctly. Be aware that there's one version that uses real letters, and one that uses klingon letters.

Wow what a sugar rush that would be just to even try eating the wookie cake lol. But I would probably try anyways and end up bugging my husband with my sugar rush hyperness. Ah well.

Tom Baker!

Ten is OBVIOUSLY the Best Doctor Ever. And angel statues are SUPER MEGA CREEPY.

I kind of want a D10 cake...

Han shot first. :p

Oh, and the off-center Batman logo is driving me nuts.

@krunchifrog, I loved Zoom! I still have their mailing address stuck in my head: "Zoom: Z double-O M. Box 350, Boston Mass. 0-2-1-3-4."

Anybody that doesn't get the reference, well then, double dumbass on THEM!

The Dalek Cake In The Car made me laugh until my chest hurt. Seriously, WTF?

@Sparkle: WHAT?! Someone ELSE has already thought of doing an All Eleven Doctors costume?! Bollocks, here I thought I was SO clever! BUT! I also have the same red hair and big cans as Donna, so I'm actually All Eleven Plus Doctordonna. :)

JELLY BABIES TO ALL WHO LOVE THE FOURTH DOCTOR! TOM BAKER RULES OK!

Your Pal,

Storm

Everyone forgets Poor Gene L. Coon when talking about Star Trek, it was his baby too. I love the not the TARDIS cake, it's one I'd probably make for my friends. "break it up! you look like a cadet review!" I used to work for Intergalactic trading co. and work the cons. My fav doctors were Patrick and Tom. both were/are gentleman of the first order and Patrick was a hoot to talk to.

I got to meet Peter Davison at Gen Con a couple weeks ago. Super nice guy!!!

Also, thank you all for weighing in on your Doctor preferences without spoiling any major plot developments. I've just moved out from under a very large rock, and have joined the land of the living (translation: I've watched 2 seasons in 2 weekends. )

August 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCait

For me it has to be Tom Baker for my favorite doctor with Sylvestor McCoy being number 2 .

Speaking of Sylvestor McCoy, I think he was awesome in the first Hobbit movie!

August 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

At least the maker of the not-a-Tardis cake used apostrophes correctly. That is a geek win, in and of itself.

August 28, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterchacha1

Oh and now that I've had ime to think about it.....That Dalek cake.........What...............WHY.....................HOOOOW!

What possibly gave them that idea as a safe way to transport cake

WHY did they think that it would work.

Squints...............Leans head one way............Leans head the other........Stares..........
HOOOOW did they possibly manage to get it back out of the car?

I will be there! Please say hi if you see the invisible woman- in all body paint. I promise I'm nice and I'm sure despite all the costumes I know i will stick out. I'm a huge fan of your page!!! P,ease please do say hello!! I'm only modeling at Con on Friday for one of the panelists.

Love it all! I should totally do a binary cake for my husband's birthday next week, I do get the reference, I did not know that wookiee had two e's, and I feel better about that TARDIS cake I made that time because at least I tried a little harder that that person :)

August 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteramanda*p

The binary cake, by the way, is written in ASCII and though it is VERY oddly spaced and missing one 0 (in the last run of 0s about 16-20 from the end) it says "Happy Birthday Pam".

OH. EM. GEE. Peter Davison is there?!? JEALOUS. I remember seeing Tom Baker turn into Davison. High school. Wondering why they cast Tristan of that animal show as a Doctor. Baker is my all-time favorite. *sigh* That smile ...
