Sunday Sweets: The Wizards of Ahhhh
March 10, 2013 The other day I was browsing through my Kindle, trying to decide which of my treasures to read next, when I realized just how many wizards -- and witches -- were lurking in there. I figured it might be fun to celebrate wizards made of cake, their worlds, and the Cake Wizards who make them so magically.
Back when I was growing up, we had The Wizard of Oz,

and he really was wonderful.

Nowadays, it seems like wizards are everywhere.

While I was relieved that "All was well" when the books ended, I always wanted just a little bit more information. Did you know J.K. Rowling gave an interview that fleshed out the characters' lives after the final book in more detail?

Still, lest we give Harry too much attention, you shall not pass without admiring this wonderful cake with Gandalf the Grey (and Saruman -- two wizards for the price of one!)

Have you seen it yet? The story! The singing! The gorgeous steampunkiness (yes, it's a word, trust me) of the sets and the costumes!
(Swoon.)
There are even wizards who aren't people at all.

Sometimes they're mice wearing hats.
If this ever appeared in my kitchen, it would be a really tough choice between having it mop the floor and eating it for breakfast.
(Y'know, the floor looks pretty good right now... Where's the milk?)
It takes a real Cake Wizard to make wizard cakes this magical. Whether they use wands or fondant tools, I'm glad they're willing to share that magic with us.

Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the Elphaba cakes. Wicked has got to be my all time favorite musical. Can't wait to see it again and again and again......

I'm not a total Potter head, but I JUST finished reading the whole series through for about the third time, and I've seen all the movies. It wasn't until Sharyn mentioned it that I got .
diagon-ally.

My favorite is probably the layer depicting Kansas on the Wicked cake. Sunsets can be pretty gorgeous here in the Midwest.
Those are some fabulous cakes, but I feel compelled to mention that the back end of that lion looks like a corgi. Tell me I'm wrong.

That Christopher Garrens cake -- NUH-UH. UNPOSSIBLE. That cake is WAY too incredible.
Look at all the details on these cakes! You know somebody spent hours rolling these out in fondant.
Hmm, taking a second look at these, my primary urge isn't for cake, but for books...
LOVE LOVE LOVE Elphaba! Wicked is WONDERFUL.. sadly the new Oz movie is not so Great and Powerful... I give it a C.... not awful, just seriously lacking in greatness!
I want the first cake. It's just amazing!!! I actually have a Polly Pocket set (from when my kids were little...honest!) that's on a shelf in my living room that is The Wizard of Oz playset. It's still in it's box...never opened. One year my friend and I decided to get each other toys for Christmas. She got me that and I got her an Anne Geddes doll. My girls were very upset that I never let them play with mine. This post makes me want to take it down and just look at all the little details for hours and hours.

Magical cakes, indeed.... The last one is reminiscent of the Sorcerer's Apprentice story from the film Fantasia.
I also did not get "diagon-ally" until just now. Ooh, now I feel the need to go back and read it again.

AMAZING. Count me among the folks who didn't "get" the name of the DIagon Alley. I feel rather stupid now. All of these are amazing. I've not seen Wicked yet, but I SO want to (read the book, of course, and I've memorized the soundtrack).

I only mention this because I know how important it is to you to give accurate credit for work. The wizard cake, with the cute mouse (the one "Submitted by Evie W., and made by abbietabbie") is nearly an identical copy of a cake by Debbie Brown in her book "Enchanted Cakes for Children (Merehurst Cake Decorating)." It's actually on the cover of the book. (I wasn't sure if I could post the Amazon link to it or not.)
I own the book and attempted that very cake once, and for awhile incorporated the little mouse into all the cakes I'd make (I am not a professional, these were cakes for my own kids' birthdays). That's why it stood out to me.
So while I don't doubt the cake you pictured is by that baker, credit is due to the original idea. I wouldn't have commented if it were an "inspired by" situation, but other than the direction of the wizard's gaze, everything else is pretty much a copy (the colors, the shape of the cake board, and yes, the little mice).

I am SO RELIEVED I am NOT the only one who just facepalmed over Diagon Alley. Mind you, it doesn't make me any less ashamed that I missed it all these years, but at least I'm not alone.

That cake is glindarific. I said "Great Oz" at the sight of me. *Now that I have finished fangirling* I love Wicked it is my favorite musical of all time. Elphaba Thropp is my idol. I know all the songs and PRAY for a wicked cake that fabulous. Both of them. Now I have to hop on my broom and Defy Gravity. P. S. Wicked the movie is going to be released in 2014.
Oh look, a castle with towers that don't look like errr... something else! nudge nudge, wink wink!
