Sunday Sweets: New Year's Delusions
December 29, 2013 As we recover from our holiday revelry and look forward to 2014, it's time for that most dreaded of traditions: making our new year's resolutions.
Of course we all know what the first one will be, so let's get that out of the way first:

We will eat nothing but healthy fruits and vegetables for, like, at least a month.
But of course eating better isn't enough! We also have to run!

If someone gave me a cake that looked like a bucket of cleaning supplies (albeit very well made) I'd throw it at them! The garden cake was darling!

Uncanny! I think I will just keep this post as my "to do" list for this next year! At least if I fail to complete my list (again) I'll have pretty cakes to look at!
My New Year's Resolution:
Watch yoga on TV while eating a tower of fruit shaped cakes. (Don't worry, I'll put the plate juuuust within my reach so I have to stretch to get at the cakey goodness)
I'm with Drockbox. Beautiful cake, but WHO in their right minds gives a woman a cake that looks like a bucket of cleaning supplies??!!! Especially for her 65th birthday!
I love having the LOTR quote on the travel cake.
These are all lovely, but my absolute favourite bit of the whole post is the fact that the travel cake has a quote from Tolkien on it. It's the perfect spot to put one of my favourite quotes. :)
What if Patti runs a successful cleaning company and actually, really, enjoys cleaning? My mom loves cleaning. Seriously.

Oh, so many of my favourite things... books and yarn and cake and gardening and, yes, well, I HAVE been cleaning nearly non-stop for two days (although today I am cleaning words, because yes, this novel WILL BE FINISHED!). Thanks for the (re)inspiration!
That fruit/veggie cake is gorgeous, even if it isn't "really" a cake - it's still an awesome sugar show piece. Was curious and followed the link, per the maker's husband:
"Should probably add some background information:
- She works at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC
- Cake is currently on display at the Mint Museum
- Everything is fondant or gumpaste and colored by airbrush or hand painting
- Took roughly 50 hours to complete
- Estimated to be around 250-300 individual pieces (not counting the individual kernels of corn... then its a lot more)
- There isn't actually any cake... since it is to be displayed in the open for a few months she used Styrofoam "dummy cakes" to build off of. Could be made on a real cake easily (well, easily for her).
edit: I'm terrible at posting syntax. Also, upvote for visibility would be appreciated.
edit 2: Also, the "wood" that the cake is on is sugar as well."

I love the steam coming out of the Starbuck's coffee!!
I have to say, these Sunday Sweets cakes are both inspiring and scary.
Inspiring because of how WELL DONE they are, compared to the wrecks the rest of the week. There are a lot of truly gifted decorators out there.
And scary, because as a beginning decorator, I don't know if I ever will reach the sort of artistic heights depicted here every Sunday. I know I couldn't begin to match the skill in these cakes. Hell, right now, simple flood-filling of sugar cookies is a challenge for me!
I love the knitting cake.
The easiest way to recognize the difference between knitting and crocheting is - knitting is done with 2 sticks and crocheting is done with one. (ok, technically crocheting is done with a hook not a stick, but you know what I meant)

I'm fulfilling Resolution #4 whether I want to or not; we're moving house on New Year's Day. I'm just stopping packing long enough to take a break and make my cyber-rounds. Luckily, it's the cutest house EVER (when I saw the kitchen alone, I had that wonderfully rare Happy Attack, totally forgot to play it cool, burst into tears and said "PLEASE, can I live here?!"), totally worth the effort, and we told our friends they could forego buying us anything for Xmas/Solstice if they could just manage to drag their hungover butts over to help us move, so we have lots of help.

My 5 year old daughter took one look at the fruit and veggie cake and noticed that it is created in accordance with the colors of the rainbow. ROY G. BIV. Thank you, PBS, you have made my 5 year old more observant and educated (she actually said, "Look, ROY G. BIV, it's the colors of the rainbow.") than I thought TV could.

on the typewriter cake, i'm trying to decide is the sharpie marker is a real marker. i keep going back & forth on that.
