What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Beatle Mania

Today's sweets are a tribute to the Greatest Band in the History of the World:

 ABBA!

 No, wait, that's not it.

 ACE of BASE!

Whoops, that's not it either. Oh, I see the problem. Looks like I was in my "Guiltiest Pleasures in the History of the World" playlist. Ok, here we go. Presenting the Greatest Band in the History of the World:

 THE BEATLES!

Made by  Luckey Cakes

So hop in your yellow submarine and come together (Ha! See what I did there?) to enjoy these sweet treats featuring the Fab Four.

And here they are now, playing their fondant hearts out for Sam's Bar Mitzvah.

Sub'd by Amy G. and made by Sweet Talk Cakes

So much detail here, right down to Paul's left-handedness.  Pretty sure the lights aren't edible, but they make for a cool effect. Honestly, it would be so wrong to eat any of this cake. Let it be!

I don't know what type of event could have possibly necessitated an "I Am The Walrus" cake, but I do know that I would like to be invited next time.

When you saw this cake, were the next words that entered your head 'goo goo g'joob?' I bet they were. (Or 'koo koo ka choo,' if you're like me and have been saying it wrong your whole life.)

How sweet are the little hearts floating out of the top of this cake?

By Martha Makes Cakes

I think this cake is an homage to the Cirque du Soleil show Love, which is an homage to the musical legacy of the Beatles.  So it's an homage to an homage. Of cuteness.

I'm blown away by the album art on this cake. I spy Abbey Road  and Revolver, but there may be more in there.

What talent!  Don't feel bad if you can't recreate something like this yourself.  Next time you make a cake, just frost it with plain old vanilla icing and tell your friends it's the cover of the ninth Beatles' album, "The Beatles." Everyone will be totally impressed.

Check out the awesomeness happening all over this Beatles wedding cake. When the groom proposed to his bride-to-be, rumor has it he knelt down on one knee and gently whispered the words, "I want to hold your hand ... forever."

Sub'd by Michelle N. and made by Sweets Lorraine

I just made that up.  But I bet that's how it happened.

You know what would have been even better than giving Kath this Beatle-themed cake on her 60th birthday?

Sub'd by Lindsay C. and made by Jackie's Cake Kitchen

 Waiting four more years, duh.

And now, for the younger fans, meet "The Rattles." Way cooler than your standard baby-rattle shower cake.

Sub'd by Reed and made by Kimberly Chapman.

I'm dying to know the rest of the rat-bands on this cake. Simon and Ratfunkle?  Fleetwood Mouse? Bob Vermin? The Rodent Stones?

Here's another kiddie Beatles-themed cake:

Sub'd by Allison P. and made by Sweet Lady Jane

Because you're never too young to start being cooler than your friends. "Oh what's that, Tommy?  You've never heard of The Beatles? Pssh, they're only like, the coolest rock n' roll band of all time.  Pass me my sippy."

As you can see, a lot of today's cakes were inspired by The Beatles' Yellow Submarine film and album art.

Sub'd by Sharon H. baker unknown

Something about psychedelic pop-art in fondant form is too fun to resist. Isn't this one a dream? It's like a carousel for my eyes!

You can't buy me love: False. Because you can buy me this cake, and that's practically the same thing.

Sub'd by Rachel S. and made by Carla Ikeda

So pretty! I lovity-mclove it. All the happy colors and layers and layers of  kaleidoscopic embellishments, it practically makes me want to break out in song. (I won't, but if I did, I would pick "Here Comes the Sun," that's my very favorite!  What's yours?)

In conclusion, if The Beatles taught us one thing, it's this: All You Need is Love. Either that, or Love Is All You Need. I can never remember which.

Sub'd by Julia G. and made by choccywoccydoodah

 Love, of course, and cake.

These cakes are VERY groovy, and they make you feel peaceful looking at them :)

Yes, they do look very nice, don't they? Yes, they do. They do, though, don't they? Yes, they do. Don't they, though?

I always call that album "The Beatles", because I'm pedantic like that, but I also tag on "commonly known as the White Album" just to keep the conversation going.

Beatles weren't great, let alone the greatest

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaite

Aaand cue Beatles-haters to start rants about how they weren't the best band, and how you're so wrong ;)

But in all seriousness.... the words AREN'T Koo koo ka choo?? Well I guess I can add that to my long list of misheard lyrics :/ lol.

My S-I-L is a huge Beatles fan, so I'll have to send her the link today!! Such fun cakes

Wow, the Rattles, someone knew their Beatles' history:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rattles

Love the cakes. Brilliant colours and very inspired designs.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercaroona

I LOVE the 'Rattles'!!

And most of the other cakes should be sent to Chris 'Jericho' Irvine.Heh.

My dad is a HUGE Beatles fan, and this gives me lots of ideas for his 75th birthday cake. Thanks! Also, I'm using this as my delayed unicorn chaser from Friday's cakes.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

You asked who would need an "I am the Walrus" cake? My senior class had the theme, "We are the Eggmen!" so I suppose someone like us would need it! : )

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShelley

I LOVE that last one!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

Mouse of Pain? The Ratmones? Vermin's Hermits? We have to put aside the real band Ratt, of course.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

Found the link for the Rattles : http://kimberlychapman.com/crafts/cakes/2009-feb-musicalmice.html

Absolutely love the last two.

THANK YOU for posting these! Love love love the Beatles and now my hubby has all kinds of ideas for my next birthday cake! :) I think Beatle wrecks would be hilarious if there are such a thing. Ooh! Challenge accepted!

The other week at D&D (just to establish my probable pop cultural perspicacity right off the bat) the subject of The Beatles came up, and someone mentioned that everyone can name at least a dozen songs if asked. I said that I probably couldn't, since my musical tastes are pretty outre. I was right; I came up with five, and that was after several minutes of thought.

This means that I have no strong opinion on the quality of the music that The Beatles produced, as I recognize my own biases would get in the way of judgment. I do, however, recognize their HUGE influence on rock, pop, and mainstream music in general. And these cakes are pretty groovy, too.

My daughter and and I had the wonderful experience of seeing Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band on Ringo's 72nd birthday last month. He did a big audience sing-along of " Yellow Submarine". It was such a joyful experience, plus we are HUGE Beatles fans, so these cakes make me really happy!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea H.

Ok, first, awesome cakes! Second, it's not koo koo ka choo? Really?! I think everyone I've ever known has been singing it wrong.

The rat cake was made 2-3 years ago for That Takes the Cake in Austin by the talented Kimberly Chapman! She has a blog called "Eat The Evidence" which can be found here:http://www.eat-the-evidence.com/
Pictures from 2012 That Takes The Cake can be found here, but I haven't labeled all of them yet: http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/devrah/sets/72157630500164148/

Just when I thought I couldn't love Cake Wrecks any more than I already did...

You're awesome. I'm going to look at all these cakes again now.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWenwae

These cakes perked up my morning. I love The Beatles!

I think the "I am the walrus" cake must have been an inside joke. Beautiful execution, though.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKay

BEST. SWEETS. EVER.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeana

Wow....Yellow Submarine is one of my favorite movies of all time, so this post got a gigantic SQUEE from me. Thank you! The Sea of Holes at the bottom of the first one is particularly groovy.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

I love these... yeah, yeah, yeah...

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermel

I'm just thinking how cool it is that a 13 year old wants a Beatles cake for his Bar Mitzvah!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I also dislike the Beatles, but I like well crafted cake so it's a conflicting day for me.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

Awesome post as always. But, I'm slightly depressed to discover (because I only just noticed the Sweets directory) that there aren't any Sweets bakeries in Alabama.... So I think I shall make it my mission to find one. Maybe three or four. One for each major city, Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, and Mobile. Because Alabama brides and birthday boys and girls shouldn't have to go to Atlanta or Nashvegas to get an awesome cake. Cake Wrecks, you have given me a mission, so now I must fulfill it!

*SQUEEE*

The Rattles are mine. More pics than you can shake a drumstick at here (including close ups to identify most of them):

That last cake seriously gives me chills! SO GORGEOUS!! I think when my husband and I celebrate and anniversary (one worth noting anyways) I am going to find a way to make this the cake we celebrate with. Thanks for doing a sweets about one of my favorite bands of all time:)

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

YAY -- I was just in Liverpool last week and walked down Penny Lane (and stopped to talk to the barber - I am not making that up-- but the banker was nowhere to be seen under blue suburban skies) and peered through the fence at Strawberry Field and listened to a tribute band at the Cavern Club.

I LOVE the idea of frosting a sheet cake white and saying it's the cover art from the White Album. LOL.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna Nimous

That final cake is amazing! And the Rattles are pretty cute too.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

@ Kimberley Chapman:
Good job with that cake. I know this post is all about The Beatles, but I admit I squee'd my head off at the "Kiss" mice!! I cannot imagine how long it took you to put all that together, but it is amazing good job.

As for the cakes here, usually I enjoy Sunday Sweets. However, coming from Liverpool, and having The Beatles shoved down my throat as the "epitome" of Liverpool, it does rather irritate me. Sure they did real good for themselves, but I really do think they were highly over rated compared to other bands around during the sixties. I honestly despair of going abroad and meeting a foreign Beatles fan as the minute they find out where I am from, they bombard me with questions like I am some sort of walking encyclo(Beatlo?)pedia and that me saying "I never really liked them that much" is akin to high treason and I should be hung immediately for my crime!!!

That said, not hating, as there are one or two tracks of theirs I really do love. Besides, wouldn't the world be dull if we all liked the same things?

My uncle on the other hand, has not so much a collection as a shrine to all things "far four" related! I try not to visit more than I possibly have to! ;)

I'm so excited to see my friend April's beautiful cake this week!!! (#5 - Designer Cakes by April) I immediately recognized her work - but I feel really bad congratulating her on being featured on cakewrecks.com...

The first cake was made by Tammi Luckey of Luckey Cakes. She is an amazing cake artist!

It's weird to hear people say the Beatles "weren't that great," but I can only assume that those are people who weren't alive in the Sixties, driving around in VW Beetles, listening to AM radio. It's not a contest, people, between the Beatles, the Stones, or Peter, Paul and Mary.

All the cakes are great, but the last one captures the layering of psychedelics in the movie.

Now, pass me my sippy cup.......and a butter pie....

Ooooh! I did a yellow submarine cake earlier this year and it was BY FAR one of my favorites! I loved it so much I made a tutorial. And now I want to go make another one. :)

Wait, I'm supposed to feel guilty about liking ABBA and Ace of Base? Well, frig. (I also drive around blaring the theme song from Mannequin, so there's probably no hope for me. NOTHING'S gonna stop me now.)

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCath

Dear Jen:
FINALLY!
I have been reading your blog for--oh--maybe two years, but never left one comment. I'm sorry. I mean to remedy that situation very soon. My favorite things were Star Wars and the sixties.
I am your biggest fan. I am so happy that you finally mentioned the Beatles. I thought you didn't LIKE them or something. Phew! Sometimes you write back to commentators. I would love that.
Your friend and biggest fan,
Rosa

Of all the Sunday Sweets, this one is right up there in my top five! Love, love, love... (See what I did there?) I love The Beatles. I also love cake. These Beatles cakes are sooooo dreamy. Thank you!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa C

Here Comes the Sun is my favorite! I love it so much, I walked down the aisle to it...at my Beatles themed wedding. LOVE THIS POST!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAdrianne

Awesome! Though as the daughter of quite the Dead Head, I dearly hope there is a Grateful Dead Sunday Sweets in the future...

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

So much awesome in one post! The Beatles are my life long favorite. I think I'd have a hard time cutting any of those cakes!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelody M.

No, you were right the first time. ABBA is the Greatest band of in the History of the World. Substitute "Greatest" with "Overrated" and you can apply the statement to the Beatles. Ace of Base--meh.

I first tried to watch "Yellow Submarine" when I was seven and couldn't get through it. I have tried several times in the 39 years since and I still haven't succeeded. "Hard Day's Night" and "Help" were okay, though.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Sunday was my Birthday so seeing an entire post of Beatles inspired sweets made it that much more enjoyable.
