What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Grad Tidings of Great "Oy!"

Graduation season is ramping up, and you know what that means: time to brush up on the proper spellings of "congratulations," "graduation," and that perennial head-scratcher: "yay."

Just when you thought you'd skipped all the hard words...

I'm not sure why bakers insist on mashing up the words "congratulations" and "graduation," but eventually you've seen so many crazy combinations that even this starts to look right:

"Gladations?"

Or this:

Or... well, ok, this one's a stretch:

This made me cackle for a solid fifteen seconds. Then I had to type it out, and that made me snorfle for another twenty:

"Cogngrtaualtons Wicssaset Gardautes"

(I looked it up, and there's a Wiscasset in Maine - meaning all three words are misspelled. OPA!!)

Still, no matter how butchered your graduation cake may be, just remember: the "tossel" is ALWAYS worth the "hostle."

And that laugh was totally worth the $27.99.

 Assuming someone else paid.

(What do you suppose the second line looked like before they "fixed" it?)

Cungalulations to today's wreckporters Elizabeth M., Reta W., Michelle W., Yvette A., & Lizzie and Taylor. You may now all throw your wrecks in the air and convene at the nearest Chili's for lunch.

I would assume that the cake made for a graduation in Wiscasset was made in Wiscasset which makes you wonder why they can't even spell the name of the town they live/work in! How did they even GET to the bakery??

Con-garble-ations.

Isn't anyone else wondering about the enormous display of fruit on Katie's cake? I kept staring at those little red ones with the stems. They really look like little tomatoes to me, although I've finally come to the conclusion that they must be glazed strawberries. And the big bunch of green grapes. Green grapes really go well with chocolate icing. Looks like they couldn't decide between one of those fruit covered custard pies (I can't remember what they are called) or chocolate cake, so they went with both. Or maybe they asked for fruitcake.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but on the graduation episode of Glee (the last one, maybe?) there was a banner hanging in the hallway of the school which read "Congradulations!" Cakewrecks-influenced, maybe? I am bad at online, otherwise I'd try to get a screenshot. It's very subtle, passing in the background.

Oh my goodness! I graduated from Wiscasset High School last year.....I have been following this blog for quite a while and am surprised to see a cake from my graduating class! This is hilarious, now I want to find out who got this cake.....

I had to show this post to my mother... she taught high school English for 37 years. Now she's sitting in the corner of her closet, rocking back and forth and humming Kumbaya.

#1 picky, picky, picky

#2 I stared at the "congratulations" for about 10 seconds thinking "OMG but that looks right to me!" totally missed the "gladations."

#3 oh, look, lovely fruit!

#4 cogngrtaualtons without borders- is that like unconditionally?

#5 look! red and green goldfish swimming around the cake (they're the smiley ones, too). bet that middle line was "the hustle" ;D

@SuBee- you're on to something, lady, we could tell people it's now spelled that way and they'd spell it the right way!!! genius

@Melonie- you're awesome.

@SaraCVT I think ALL these decorators were saying "neener-neener" in their own special ways.

(grumbling) But @Craig (if that is your real name & not fiction) I love that song "Do the Hustle." It's the only one where I never get the words wrong. (well, that and "Love to Love you Baby" by Donna Summer)

@Sharyn a twofer day! WOOT

Wow. There is so much going on in these wrecks that no one else seemed to notice that the numbers are out of order on the PRE-K cake. Or maybe they skipped that lesson in class.

Anyway I'm so excited that we got TWO songs from sharyn today. Both were excellent.

Wow. It's just like snowflakes. No two congratulations are misspelled alike.

And that's why Cake Wrecks is my home page. Never ceases to amaze!
Conggredelatians on another great post. :)

@Degera: I laughed so hard I couldn't open my eyes. Kumbaya!

@Sharyn: O Diploma has to be the best yet. I can see Curly and Aunt Eller shaking their heads together as we speak.

"Katie"'s cake was GORGEOUS before they wrote on it...I would have been so disappointed!

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJess

With the spelling on these cakes it makes one wonder how on earth these wreckerators got out of school to begin with. Lol man I would laugh hysterically at the third cake then cry if I had to pay for it. Honestly is it too much to ask for them to try and spell anything correctly? My brain has just about exploded right now.

There is a long history of this, at least back to the 1800's:

Owl licked the end of his pencil, and wondered how to spell “birthday.”

“Can you read, Pooh?” he asked, a little anxiously. “There’s a notice about knocking and ringing outside my door, which Christopher Robin wrote. Could you read it?”

“Christopher Robin told me what it said, and then I could.”

“Well, I’ll tell you what this says, and then you’ll be able to.”

So Owl wrote…this is what he wrote:

HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY

Pooh looked on admiringly.

“I’m just saying ‘Happy Birthday,’” said Owl.

“It’s a nice long one,” said Pooh, very much impressed by it.

“Well, actually, of course, I’m saying ‘A Very Happy Birthday with love from Pooh.” Naturally it takes a good deal of pencil to say a long thing like that.”

Thanks for addressing one of my pet peeves. How hard is "Yay"? For the record, "Yeah" is what people who can't be bothered to correctly pronounce "Yes" say.

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

I have been reading your blog since you began it. I want you to know that I laughed that first day and I am still laughing now. The wrecks are hilarious and your take on them is even funnier.
Thank you!!

OK, on cake #4 - I can understand that one might misspell Congratulations and Graduates. Let's face it, those are toughies. But presuming this is for kids in Wiscassat, is it just too much to think the local baker would know how to properly spell the town he/she lives in, or at least lives near?? I guess I'm just expecting too much.

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

I went to Wiscasset High School so this is especially funny for me.

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlishaMisha

I graduated from Wiscasset High School back in 07. I'm super curious as to who made cake number 4. I got a good laugh out of it though :)

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Eh. Who puts fresh grapes on a cake?

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn

Yay! Thanks for the props CrAig. I got the reference!! Woohoo! Cungradultons to me!

Forgive me for being cynnical, but I just canNOT believe that there are this many complete imbeciles in this world. I mean, I know there are a LOT. Lots and lots! But some cakes I see on here are so unbelievably bad, it makes me wonder if bakers aren't doing some of these on purpose just to get on Cakewrecks. I mean, they are not being identified on the site, so there's no harm to them, their business or their reputations.

I could be very wrong and will continue to laugh my butt off at the wrecks because, accidental or not, they are still sadly hilarious!

June 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

Hey there, Wiscasset Maine, my neck of the woods! Although we refer to it as Wiscasket. And I agree about the radiation, that must have something to do with it!

June 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaitlin

all i can say is this site is awesome! :)

June 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commentervictoria

can you tell me which state cake #2 was made in? I swear it looks like one I saw before

June 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFirefly

Even spelled right, the last cake is inacurate: It's not called a tosle, it's called a toff. Look it up!

June 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLulu

"Yah Pre-K"? REALLY!?!?!?

Oh, and...when I saw the title of this, I heard Timon say the "Oy!" part (in my head, of course). Ya' know...Timon...the meerkat...from The Lion King? THAT Timon? Partially cuz he's the last one I've heard say the word "Oy!" before I read this, and partially cuz I actually have a little crush on him...yup, I just said that!

June 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMeaghan

Cake #4... Wow! I seriously nearly lost all bladder control. *hahahaha, sigh*

July 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMags

The weirdest thing about "Cogngrtaualtons Wicssaset Gardautes" is it's a perfect anagram for "Congratulations Wiscasset Graduates" (if you change one 'g' for an 'i', all but one letter are there). I definitely agree it is possibly one of the most astounding wrecks around.
