What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Dadisms

In honor of Father's Day, here are some of our favorite "Dadisms", with a Sweet twist:

"Don't make me turn this car around!"

By Debbie Does Cakes

("I'm not lost; this is a short cut.")

"Do I look like I'm made of money?"

By Queens of Sweet

[when we complain:]

"It's good for you. It builds character."

By Creative Cakes by Julie

"Help me polish my sniper rifle before you bring your date in."

By Not Your Average Cake

"When I was your age, we didn't have iPads and mp3 players and all these newfangled toys...

By Gateaux Inc.

"We had rocks and sticks, and we liked it."

"Go clean your room."

By Frost Your Cake

(Er...let's just say those are root beer bottles, k?)

"Finish your vegetables."

By Cakecrumbs and based on the original by Sweetopolita that we featured here.

"Go ask your mother."

By peggypal

"Directions are for sissies. Now, hand me that hammer."

By Sweet Things

"Does this shirt go with this tie?"

Baker unknown

And the best Dadism of all?

By Rouvelee's Creations

"I love you."

Happy Fathers' Day, everyone! Hug 'em if you got 'em.

Cake #2: Could the baker be convicted of counterfeiting? ;)

Cake #6: Questionable bottles strewn about...pizza...cupcakes(?)...lingerie...Twister next to the bed? I smell (literally) a frat room.

Final cake: *sniff* Sorry...*sniffle* Seasonal allergies. *honk!* (I truly <3 this cake)

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE that last cake!! Impressions in the frosting/fondant!! Too cool!

#6 The pink vibrator on the nightstand kind of detracts from the whole "Dad" aspect . . . well, for me, anyway! (Maybe a "Who's Your Daddy?" cake?) ;)

The Asparagus cake... was made first by Sweetapolita (2010 instead of CakeCrumbs' 2011 post), and Sweetapolita has better pictures of it. I suggest you replace them with hers. Credit where credit is due!

[Editor's note- Bwoops. I had meant to put the link in. We actually featured the Sweetopolita one quite a while ago but we thought this version was awesome and we didn't want to reuse the cake. Anyway, I updated the links. Thanks for the heads up! -john]

Great cakes! So much detail. Speaking of detail...in the bedroom cake, what is that supposed to be on the nightstand beside the lamp?!? LOL

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAli

Best post ever!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly

Awesome!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

Happy Falker Satherhood!!!

Awesome cakes, once again.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEla

The Apple cake made me swoon.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

the first and fifth are my absolute favorite. I also enjoy the bedromm with its questionable contents

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAinspooh

After all those funny lines why'd you go and make me cry with that last one? D_:

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

That Apple cake is absolutely stunning. It's so immaculate. I've been doing cakes for 2 years and I wouldn't have a clue how to even start to achieve something like that! Absolute perfection.

The camping cake is adorable. And that last one - excuse me while I tear up. *sob*

Oh my gosh that sure does look like a vibrator! My thought was a game of Strip Twister, which I know MY dad would certainly not have approved of! Looks like a frat party, but frat boys don't usually have violet blankets with matching flower pillows. But girls don't usually have half a pizza on the floor either.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

Thanks...for the memories....now where's that Kleenex.....

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermel

The asparagus cake is one of my all-time favorites.

The Twister game loooks like a sheet of Avery color-coding labels!

Wow. So pretty. Can't wait to hug mine tomorrow. He is going through some tough stuff medically. Post stem cell transplant (AML) and trying to come back from starvation due to stomach bleeding. I don't know what i would do without him. So definitely hug em if you got em and don't forget to tell him he is the world's best Daddy.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterA.Germany

You definitely saved the best for last today! That last cake is so precious : ) absolutely love it!!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

I love the camping cake and the wee baby elephant on the final cake. So cute! I do wish the apple cake had a sliced shot 'cause it looks too real to be cake. That is some amazing skill! I am in awe of the talent of some people.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

Can anyone tell what the icons on the iPad say? I can't make the words out, but I bet it's cute!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commentera. square

I am going to agree with amber... It's more of a who's your daddy cake with the vibrator on the night stand!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCeajae

Really creative and cute post, as always!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Fun, but not one looks delicious! I can't think of anything less appetizing than eating a pile of money!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdanas1

The iPad™ cake is absolutely awesome, and awesome twice over for the geek factor. :-)

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

That last cake is one of the best I've ever seen at making me tear up- I love the baby on it!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDanni

Great cakes all around...

But I can't believe that here of all places nobody has recognized / pointed out that cake #1 is Herbi the "Love Bug" of old tme Disney fame... Try here

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMattMyx

Absolutely loving the Herbie cake!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCyberjar88

I teared a little with the last one.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYuki-mekishiko

Is that what I think it is on the nightstand???

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

The camping dad is a Redshirt! This can't end well....

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTori

Jen, seriously?! I mean, I may be slightly hormonal, but you made me cry with that last one!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBec

The asparagus cake and the Apple cake were both amazing pieces of tromp l'oi.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

Wow! I keep looking back at the iPad picture. I can't believe that's cake. It looks so real!

I did get a big laugh out of the first one though. I have a cousin named Herbie so I had to share it.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

I totally cried at the last one.

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdoodlebug

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one that teared up at the last one.

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

My husband has promised to polish his borrowed gun while the date is here picking up our daughter, not before. It scares them more if they know you have it. And to have on prominent display pictures of our daughter earning her black belt. (She's not quite 5 yet and won't start Karate until this fall, but the man has plans for her future.)
The last one was so awesome! I got teary.

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

Sorority rooms look pretty trashed as well. that was what I thought of first off, not a frat room. And the camping cake would be absolutely perfect for my mother. her idea of camping was and is: us in a tent and her poolside at the closest hotel.

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Jo

@A Square - the icons on the iPad are:
Tomorrow! (Calendar)
Going to the Chapel (Church)
Maui (Airplane)
I Do (Rings)
The McKinney's (Email)
Married (Facebook)

And the iPod has Sinatra's "It Had to be You" cued up.

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPamtha

Sounds like the iPad one is a wedding cake. What a cute idea for techno geeks!

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

Oh wow, I never thought I'd see one of my cakes on Sunday Sweets, especially not one from one of my first attempts at fondant. I seriously look at Sunday Sweets every week and aspire to be as good as those bakers one day. So while I'm not sure mine deserves to be amongst this lot, I'm honoured that you guys found it okay enough to include.

Here in Australia it's not Father's Day for quite some time yet, but this post still made me want to go give mine a big hug. The final cake is especially gorgeous.

June 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCakecrumbs

Did you not notice the "pink toy" on the dresser of the Clean Your Room cake?! BAHAAAHAAAA!!!

June 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrowdy

TWO beer bottles, TWO cupcakes, TWO cups, TWO pieces of pizza on the bed...I'm wondering two things: one - why is the bed so nicely made and two - why would you need the vibrator?! Either way, I think the person sleeping in this room will be celebrating Father's Day next year!

July 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Just seen this today and am so flattered that my cake appears. Thank you so much xx
