Sunday Sweets: Jolly Rogers

A'hoy there, me hearties! Comb your beard, grab your eyepatch, and screw that peg leg in extra tight, because we're about to set sail for adventure. We seek the sweetest Sweets on the seven seas, in a pursuit of pirate pastry! Yo ho, let's go!
And here comes our sailing vessel now:
By BakingGirl
... gently gliding toward us on rolling waves of blue buttercream!
(Note to self: no more rum for breakfast.)
Who knows what mysteries and adventures await?
No, seriously, does anyone know?
Perhaps we should consult a map first...

Hmm, looks like we head east for a bit, then take a left at the terrifying and hopefully not-drawn-to-scale sea dragon. Got it.
Hey, where did everybody go?
Don't worry, mates, whether through shark-infested waters, cannon-fire, or an ogling octopus...
...your captain would never lead you astray!
You, there! Captain Beckett! There's only room on this ship for ONE captain, comprende?
Oh, forget it. You're just too darn cute.
And Captain Hook, TOO? Fine. I'll make one last exception.
By Erin Salerno
Besides, your prosthetic could totally double as a dough hook for my KitchenAid. That might really come in handy. AH HA HA! Ha. ha. Ahem. Sorry.
You know, there's an old superstition that having a woman on board will bring the voyage bad luck.

I'm not buying it. But I'll tell you what I will buy: every last one of these adorable pirate princess cupcakes.
Mmmhmm, better throw in a dozen or so of these cookies, too.
Villainy at sea has never looked cuter!
And I'm not sure whether Jack the monkey here is also cute, or is secretly plotting the demise of every living thing he sees.

I'm not even sure if he's cake or an actual monkey. So lifelike.
(But I am sure I'm digging the use of silver dragees here.)
Shiver me timbers, it looks like we've got company, in the form of another superb ship!
Check out these fabulous details – the cannons, the railings, the sails, and the jolly roger – edible, all of it! Well, maybe not the sails, but I'm sure if you tried hard enough...
And here's the poop deck!
By Nellaine
Really, I just wanted to say "poop deck."
Aye, we've hit the motherlode: Tasty treasure galore! But the real treasure isn't the cake, it was spending time with all of you.
By Karren's Specialty Cakes & Confections
Just kidding, it's the cake.
Pass me a fork.
Arrrg!
Avast, have a Sweet to nominate, ye folksal dogs? Then be sending it me way at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

Aww what sweet cakes, but nothing red white blue for memorial day??? I hope you have not forgotten our service people :(
Getting a bit like the Enterprise in here? Captain Kirk, Captain Spock, Captain Sulu, Captain Scott, am I missing anyone?
All these cakes/cookies are awesome, but what would have been even cooler is if one of the pirate ships had as passengers the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything crew from Veggie Tales. :)
The Captain Beckett cakes were done by a CW reader? Wow!
But, why is the Captain Jack Sparrow cake gone?
These were beautiful! I love the map with the sea dragon. So very gorgeous!
Please tell us that you will do a little something for Memorial Day in honor of the brave men and women who defend this country. I truly thought that today would be all red, white, and blue for Sunday Sweets!
This site always makes me chuckle Monday through Saturday, and Sunday's make me wish I had the talent of the bakers featured.
Ya'll rock!!! (Mississippi gal here, and the use of ya'll is necessary at all times!)
Y'know, as often as Mike's Amazing Cakes ends up on Sunday Sweets, it might just be good to feature his incredible work exclusively. Maybe a "Mike's Marvelous Monday" ;-) All these offerings are...well, SWEET! :-D
Great commentary, Lindsey, as usual! Especially the Kitchen Aid joke. :)
Are those Fruit Gushers on the last cake?? AWESOME
When I saw the sea dragon map my first though was "Ok but where's the cake?". And then it struck me! WOWSERS!

Great post today - and I'd like to issue a challenge to the CW readership and owners. Can we please have a word for "the art to edible cake ratio has fallen below acceptable limits". I've seen this condition before, but today's island cake highlights the issue. I looked at its beauty and thought "well, how many guests do they HAVE? Don't they need more cake in there? What about all the parents who know just when to show up to reclaim their youngsters, i.e. right as the cake is served? Mama needs CAKE!"
My suggestion is CRATIOITUS - a Cake RATIO problem.
Wow, thiese are all great cakes. I love pirate stuff. lol Anyway, I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make the black pearl. Or better yet, I would like someone to make some of those see people off of Pirates of the Caeribein Davey Jonees locker. lol
*gasp!* It's Copernicus!
Also, the Kitchen Aid thing made me laugh pretty hard :) Thanks!
While the monkey cake is impeccable from a skill standpoint, it is still a monkey cake.
I hate monkeys.
They are the stuff of nightmares.
No more Rum for breakfast?????? I'd rather walk the plank!!!!!!!
Beautiful cakes!!!!!!!!
AAAAHHH! That princess pirate cake is way. too. adorable. The pink stripes, the sand, the pearls, it's all just too much. Just the right mix of tomboy and pink. Oh if I could be a kid again...
@Susan First, I apologize if you were just making a joke on the CAPTCHA word...
But, if you look at the island cake, I think the "island" design is actually sat on top of a regular-size sheet cake; it's just a little hard to tell because of the way the photo is framed/cropped. But if you look at the distance from the back scrolls to the table top, and also at the sides and toward the front, I think you'll see what I mean!
But I've seen this a lot with other cakes, and it kind of makes me scratch my head. I personally prefer cakes that are beautiful cakes, not cakes that look like something else -- though obviously I appreciate the skill involved for both types!
Egads, the crappy pirate cookies I made last week look extra crappy by comparison now! But colour me not surprised that Sweet Sugar Belle would turn out so many fabulous ones...she's a cookie goddess, she is.
Love, love, love the monkey!
Dammit- I MUST get more pictures of my cakes... my pirate ship kicked the crap out of those ones... know why? 'cos it had a Pirate Parrot on board... you heard... PIRATE PARROT. it was so cute! :D
Hah, it's Copernicus!
That island cake looks *exactly* how I always imagined the dragon island from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Exactly the shape and everything. Weird! I wonder if anyone's ever done a Dufflepod cake.
Yar, welcome to the Good Ship o'Cakewrecks! Me piratey heart be a fluttrin' at the sight o' ye Sweets!
And that's all the pirate talk I can do at the moment (much harder to spell it out than to speak it)! I'm bummed I missed it yesterday but glad it was the first thing I saw online this morning! Now to convince friends and family to have 95% of these made for my future bdays!
I know you are likely beyond this, but I nominated you for the Illuminatiing Blogger Award because you greatly deserve it. Thanks for all the cake art and horror and for ALWAYS making me laugh. You are a light in my world! http://foodstoriesblog.com/illuminating-blogger-award/ if you'd like to accept and respond.
@Gretchen, good one!! (And a nice list, too!) You did Star Trek:TOS, so, here's the rest (I think): Captain Picard, Captain Sisco, Captain Janeway, Captain Archer. If we include temporary duty/transfers, Data was captain once & so was Troy, and I think in the future, we had Captain Crusher (Beverly) & possibly Captain Riker. And, of course, Q wore a Starfleet uniform once, but I don't remember if it was the rank of Captain or not.
@Diane1611 - I'd love to see the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, too! Would be fabulous!! :-)
And for anyone else like mindy1 & dana, you need to do like John thoj says & see last year's SundaySweets right before Memorial Day. Do your homework before you start ranting, please. Better yet, stow it - this ain't the place. We're here for laughs and a little relaxation. By all means, attend the Memorial Day Service of your choice and remember our soldiers. I'm sure that's what a lot of CW readers did yesterday without preaching about to everyone else.
@Gretchen, we can definitely include Beverly Crusher and Will Riker as Captains. Crusher was given the bridge while the rest of the bridge crew looked for Data in the "Descent" season six finale. And Will Riker was given the Enterprise after Picard had been captured by the Borg in "The Best of Both Worlds", the finale for season three.
And yes, Q did have the rank of Captain much of the time in his appearances.
Fo'c'sle. Just sayin'.
The monkey-shaped cake is my prize-winner- incredible pice of art, so beautiful that if it depended on my I would never cut it to destroy its integrity. I am also impressed by the pirates cookies- they are rather attractive candy option for children parties.
