I noticed a lot of comments here and on the King Cakes post about the "baking it withOUT the baby" issue as precaution for "not getting sued" and, I must say I find it a bit entertaining! In many spanish-speaking places, on January 6th we have what is very similar to King Cake and if you find the baby in your piece, you get to be the one to make the party on a later date.
I just find it funny how the places where they make the confection don't have to leave the baby on the outside, because we're all too familiar with it. Maybe it's just me, and I have a weird sense of humor.
@SuBee Lady, you rock!
@epcotlover yeah, ALL of the comments (and who are you, really? I bet you’re Zorro in disguise)
Re: the deep fried pastries shown today- not a peep from me.
Well thanks for the explanation for the baby in the center of the cake. I guess I have always associated Easter with the resurrection of Christ rather than with Moses but what ever floats ones boat I guess. lol Anyway, if this is what that first cake is representing, it is a pour reprensenation of it. lol To me it looks like Moses got mangled by a crock and now only has one arm. And wow look at the size of the basket they put him in. lol
Where I work we get in boxes of frozen pre-rolled king cake dough in February. You can keep dough in the freezer for several months without it going bad. I'm sure the cakes were fresh baked, but it's not like supermarket bakeries are mixing up fresh dough every time they bake things.
Please tell me those peeps aren't resting on sauerkraut...just thinking they are makes me want to run away lol. Wow. What a way to repurpose a cake. I once had a cake similar to the King cake. Only this was in my Spanish class for the day of the dead. I ended up nearly biting into a skeleton. Meaning I got to throw the party the next year lol. Well I was a senior so didn't. Bad bad me..evil wreckerators that put that thing in the cake to begin with..
@SuBee: That's awesome.
@Sarah: As a former Wisconsinite, I feel qualified to inform you that we used to put non-edible items in them, but Kringles tend to be inhaled and those baby dolls resulted in too many trips to the hospital. ;)
@B: It would be nice if I could believe that this was a genuine repurposing of frozen dough, but given the colors on the icing and the pre-Easter sell by date, this looks far more like an old King Cake.
I took the second photo, the peeps are resting on green coconut. Not nearly as scary as sauerkraut, but still gross due to the sheer quantity they shoved in there. And it wasn't at a Publix, it was at a Wegman's in "upstate" NY.
In all the talk about the "Easter Danish," the cross cake is getting overlooked. Seriously, someone can't even make a cross shape?? It's just two rectangles!! How could it have turned out like a blob?
I wonder if larry regusa makes an easter cake?!

The box from the first one is DEFINITLY from Publix, I shop there all the time, and I used to work there, so I think I know what the boxes look like, but whatever.
@Annie - I wasn't disagreeing with you about the first photo, just about the one that I took, no need to be offended.
Looks funny. lol

Being a Dane living in Denmark, I have for the first time in my life made acquaintance with the Easter Danish Ring, on this website.
Okay, I know you guys like to call all pastry for "danish", but I can assure that you will never find an Easter Danish Ring in Denmark. This is not something we make here.
