What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Be My Valentine?

Today I got you a very special valentine. Yes, you. No no, not you - YOU. [waggling eyebrows]

Now, it might look like a regular Sunday Sweets post, but it's filled with awesome Valentines cakes. Just the way you like. Yep. (Who loves ya? Huh?)

Check it out. This one says, "I'm wild about you, Valentine!"

By Kakes by Karen

I think it's also saying "Eat me!" - but in a really polite way.

This one is for that adorable nickname I gave you:

By CakeCentral member Miranda1987

"Curly cherry stem."

And I know how much you like Snoop Dog, so...

By Blue Cupcake by Julie

You're welcome.

Remember that time we released a single balloon at the park, and stood together watching it rise and rise as it drifted off into the rich red sea of the sunset?

No?

Oh.

Well, this is pretty anyway:

By hello naomi

Simple perfection.

Just like you.

(D'awwww.)

If I had the time, ability, or inclination to hand form and dye hundreds of tiny sugar hearts, and then apply them one-by-one to a beautiful cake, it would never look this good:

By Erica O'Brien Cake Design, tutorial for sugar hearts here

But I like to think it'd still make you smile.

Boxes of chocolates are sweet, but you know what's even sweeter?

By Baking Obsession

Boxes of chocolates that let you EAT THE BOX.

And from now on I've giving every box lid a test nibble, just for you.

Speaking of edible, you're not going to believe this, but you can eat this lace:

By For The Love of Cake

Well, and not choke on it, I mean. That is, it's supposed to be eaten. Wowza. Can you imagine if ALL lace was edible?

Er....oh.

On second thought, never mind. (Hi, kids!)

Ah, here's just the Sweet we need to rescue my dignity:

By Truly Custom Cakery

That is some serious swag.

Of course, the best Valentines always celebrate what's *inside*:

By Bakingdom

And this makes my technicolor heart oh-so happy.

Speaking of which, you know I have to give you a Valentine that reflects my geeky side, too, right?

By Cakes by Katherine

Just try not to read too much into the red-shirt thing.

Sub'd by Lisa R., made by SugarRushTreats

I call these, "Love Bytes."

(Heehee!)

And finally, the ultimate expression of love and companionship:

By Cloudy Cakes

And that's no lie.

Have a great Valentines this week, Valentines!

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets (at) Cake Wrecks (dot) com.

Aww how sweet-the Star Trek one should have said LOVE long and prosper :D, but it was so sweet anyone. They are all so sweet and cute

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

The red shirt is clearly next generation command, considering the four pips and all.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLady D

Yay for a nice cup cake cake any day! :D

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

Wait, that's a Captain's shirt with Spock's vulcan greeting? Cute but so wrong!

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim

no daisies?

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymaz

I definitely squeeled a little when I saw the star trek one. :) It made my bad morning very happy. :D

That's a next generation shirt! All the cool kids are wearing red~ Picard, Riker, Wesley, Various Corrupt Admirals....Q.....

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaraethon

Hilarious caption for the Companion Cube! The fact that there are Portal-based cakes in general is a huge win.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenna

I want that lace cake NOW! Gimmegimmegimmegimmegimme!!!

Erm, please? *puppydog eyes*

I would also accept the technicolor cake or any or the geek cakes, but that lace cake just calls to the Victorian half of my soul . . . :)

Happy V-day, everybody! <3

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

That Star Trek cake is excellent. But I coudn't eat it without thinking of that dream episode where Worf was eating that cake with Deanna Troi's head on it.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDPL

Want! Trouble is, which one?? LOVE the rainbow heart, but .... Snoopy! And Trek!!! Gawrsh! I just dunno; maybe I'll just tell the DH to get me one of each?

Y'know the problem with these cakes? They make the wrecks look even wreckier than they were to begin with.

"And from now on I've giving every box lid a test nibble,"

oops

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJames

I want that reainbow heart cake sooooo bad.
I'm so glad there are photos of how it was made on the site it came from!

The problem with comparing your sweet hart to a companion cube is that you are implying that eventually you are going to toss them into a pit of flames to open a door.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzie T.

that first one is the very BEST animal print cake I've ever seen- and so elegant. (double sigh)

it rates a double sigh as it's Valentine's week. :D

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Okay, the adorable little robots made me squee out loud... Sooooo cute! You made my day. :)

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

Is anyone else thinking what I'm thinking? I'm imagining the weekday versions of these cakes...

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

All these cakes are excellent! Love the rainbow heart one. Bakingdom is a wonderful site. Thanks for sharing!

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

Was that a 'while you were sleeping' reference there at the top?! I hope so, it's my favorite rom-com of all time.

Great sweets, I got some inspiration for the cake I'll be making this Tuesday

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

I think that rainbow heart cake just might be one of the coolest things I have ever seen. :)

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Squeeing my way down the blog post. Look, look, look! How preeetttyy! Simply sublime to just jaw-dropping. The cupcake cake! The Snoopy! The balloon and sugar hearts and rainbow hearts and robot cookies and...and... Oh, my geek heart just quietly sighed over the Star Trek cake.

Happy Valentine's Day to me (and you). Happy Valentine's Day to you (and me). Happy Valentine's... Happy Valentine's... Haaapppy Valentine's too-oooo meeee (and you).

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterteabunny

Love the weighted companion cubes.

The cake was never a lie, anyway, right? Sure, the mysterious person who came before never saw it, but we did.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P

You had me at the Star Trek cake. And the companion cube. *melt* May your Valentines be Geeky and sweet (but not too sweet, 'cause cavities).

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAGoodFedora

You have to remember that by the time ST:TNG came around, red was the color for command, and gold was the color for security, so it was the gold shirts who were always running the risk of getting phasered. Like Tasha Yar . . .

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanus

Holy. Cow.

Not sure which one makes me swoon the most -- that utterly understated single red balloon (where are the other 98?) or the perfectly ombrée sugar hearts.

Wow.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna Nymous

The box-of-chocolates and the lace just officially blew my mind. Wow. Wow. WOW.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I love the Portal one! :)
"And that's no lie."

Haha! Companion cube <3

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMystique

My Princess daughter saw today's Sunday Sweets and has declared that she does not want a Disney Princess party for the third year, but instead she wants a Star Trek party, and she wants me to make the featured Star Trek cake. She has been watching Season 1 on Star Trek TNG this fall (one episode a week). Thank you!

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKtCallista

My love for the last cake isn't a lie, either. Portal reference FTW.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrad hannah

DPL beat me to the Deana Troi cake reference. It was a cellular peptide cake. With mint frosting.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Omigosh I love those cakes! Especially the one with the balloon. It reminds me of the time I was at a party in Rome, New York (insert love symbol here, I don't know how to make one. Plus, that was when I first read your first book and found out about the world of cake wrecks, \m/(>.<)\m/), and I released a balloon into the sky and watched it dissapear, even though I knew at some point the balloon would pop on it's own or get stuck in a plane engine and jam the thing, causing the plane to crash... That sort of dampend the moment, didn't it? ):' Any way, I wish that, on valentines day, everyone would let go of a balloon made of sugar that looked like the one on that cake. And that the balloons would be able to fly and never pop. I also wish there was world peace. Peace. Peace is good. (Why are you looking at me like that? Gah!)

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKatWag

I gasped when I saw the single balloon cake. Absolute perfection.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJayne

does anyone know how that rainbow cake was done? I'd love to try to recreate it but can't, for the life of me, figure out how that was done.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJaeda

Can't say I like the "technicolor" cakes...blech....

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLynn

COMPANION CUUUUUBE! D'awww... soo cuuute.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKeni

I wish I could pick a favorite! I think the cupcake. No, wait, the heart balloon. No, maybe the multicolored hearts...

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianne

Thanks for the link for EDIBLE LACE - if anything could entice me to want to make anything the kitchen, this might be it.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermouse

Wow those are all stunners!! My goodness ... mouth watering ... more like drooling ...

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMiki

I disagree with the zebra stripes, but then, I am not into animal themes. And the red/black/white thing doesn't do well for me.

I will gape in awe at the EDIBLE lace. What the heck is that stuff made from?

And, cute red shirt. Well, if you're going to eat a Trekkie cake, it had to be a red cake. With red velvet...

And those candy hearts? Heavens...wow.

February 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdp

Red Shirt thing is only for the original. Red in TNG is a good thing.

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoose

Some of them are WRECKS!!!!

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMia

The companion cube was my favorite! Well played, well played, indeed!

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

Love, love, LOVE them ALL! Especially love Snoopy, the ombre hearts, the single red heart, the cherry cupcake...ALL of them!

Winners!

HVD, everyone!

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSalannB

@Jaeda: The rainbow cake looks like a variation on the technique described here:
http://amerrierworld.com/2009/06/22/rainbow-cake-and-unicorns/

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

Edible lace? Ok who's winding me up here?'Cos someone's gotta be kidding me! That lace is just so gorgeously perfect that I want it on my wedding dress....(now there's a thought, walk down the aisle, nibble dress...sounds perfect) -ahem- honestly, it the the most beautiful, lush thing I have ever seen in my life...I want, I want, I WANT! xx

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnnaMontana

It doesn't matter whether it's ST : TOS or ST : TNG. "Live Long and Prosper" along with a red shirt still strikes me as an oxymoron. How can that love not be doomed?

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

Did anyone else see that Snoopy changed his name to Snoppy? LOL. A great way to cheer up a bed ridden gal!

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArianna

Had to try out the ombre sugar right away! I'm in love with the technique. I plan on making this for several upcoming holidays in various colors and shapes. First up, polka dot pink cupcakes for valentines!

February 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

I noticed the "Snoppy" error as well, but I thought maybe my wreck filled eyes were just playing tricks on me.

February 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizamair

Cool round up - Naomi's cake is perfection and I have adored those Robot cookies since the first time I ever saw them. Love the star trek cake......it would make a perfect "Engage" ment cake.
