Yep, just snip a few branches from an oak tree, head down to your local marsh and pick a few cattails, throw in a few flowers, and boom: centerpieces.
Reason #4 to have a fall wedding: You can have a wedding photo shoot in great big pile of leaves! Ack! It will be so cute! So cute, everyone will barf from the cuteness!

Try frolicking in some gilded leaves like these if you're feeling extra classy. Ooh, just think of the fun!
Reason #5 is even more fun: Instead of leaving in a limo or horse-drawn carriage, you lovebirds can head off into the sunset on a hayride.

Ok, so this cake does not actually feature hay, but close enough. You might be surprised to know how hard it is to find a quality hay-covered cake these days. (Then again, you might not.)
Reason #6: There are so many great smells in the fall. Pumpkin, apple cinnamon, woodsmoke, amber candles, pine, mmmmmmyeah.

Reason #8 to have a fall wedding: There are literally 25 million more fall wedding ideas floating around the internet than spring wedding ideas. I'm not even exaggerating. Google it.

Reason #9: As any seasoned pro will tell you, if you're trying to squirrel away some money, rates are often cheaper in the fall. It's nuts! (Sorry. That was acorny joke. I'll leaf it alone now.)

No romantic harvest moon songs?? Either you have never heard Neil Young's "Harvest Moon", or I am having a Sheldon moment and don't understand sarcasm. Don't really care either way, as it gave me an excuse to listen to it :)

We got married Columbus Day Weekend. It was perfect- blues skies, the leaves were at their peak, the weather warm enough no one needed coats. I wish I had had one of these cakes for it!!!
We've had so many hideous wrecks that were supposed to be tree stumps. I never understood what they were trying to look like until today. The last cake is adorable. I wonder if there's such a thing as a maple-flavored cake, because that would be awesome.
Neil Young works, too -- but "Shine On, Harvest Moon"was written in 1908 by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth-- before Neil was even born!

I'm already a fan of autumnal weather and weddings. But I love some of the ideas you gave. I'll keep them in mind if I ever find someone foolish enough to want to ball-and-chain themselves to me.
I got married in the fall and we had a caramel apple bar at our reception. :) Different kinds of apples, caramel, chocolate, nuts, etc. It was awesome! At least, I hear it was awesome - I barely had time to eat anything!

I LOVE that "hay" cake with the two little birds. So sweet and pretty, without being too feminine (not that there's anything wrong with feminine cakes).
Heh. Funny how another Sara mentioned college football for a reason NOT to get married in the fall. But for me it's Big 12 football. (Go Cyclones) And don't schedule a fall wedding in Nebraska unless it's the bye week.
Otherwise, these are goooorrrrrgeous cakes.
I hear you, Sara. As a Nebraska Cornhusker, I learned long ago that if you want to get married during football season, you need to make sure the game isn't on TV, or it's a bye week. Otherwise, you'll just have everyone watching the game at the reception.
My allergies are worst in the fall, so that would make me hesitate. But if I knew one of these gorgeous cakes was waiting for me at the reception, it might be worth it!
The bridal slipper & groom's bow tie are a lovely touch to a stunning, thoughtful cake. Someday...

oh and don't forget getting pics taken around/in a leaf pile. Instead of rice/bird seed people can throw leaves... oh the things you could do with leaves.....
I attended a fall wedding last month. It included hay rides a bonfire and s'mores. Best ideas ever.
I got married in August...on a record-breaking 103-degree day in Oregon...no A/C in church or reception hall. We're lucky no one passed out.
These cakes (and the idea of a s'mores bar) make me want to get married again...right now!
The little pockmarks on cake #2 means it's buttercream. Oh, yeah! But all the cakes are great, loving the color combinations.
I love all the ideas of a fall wedding, especially because October has personally been a month to try new things. Going to keep those ideas in my someday file.
The moss on the tree bark effect is perfect when the cake is intact. I don't think it would look so attractive when it is sliced and put on plates. (Go Cyclones! Go Flashes!)
Fall is my favorite season. How I long to be a fall bride! Yet here I languish in SEC land, a devoted Auburn fan myself (even with the dismal season we've had) and so winter it shall be. Spring has never appealed to me, really, though I guess I do have flower issues since I love daisies and tulips. :)
My cake looked very similar to #2 and we had autumn leaves everywhere, including the boquets! We were married 15 yrs ago on the Sat before Thanksgiving. Fall is my favorite season. But alas, here in the deep south, it was opening day for deer season. My BIL actually climbed out of his deer stand, showered quickly at the cabin, rushed 45 miles, got in the family photos, witnessed the wedding, and grabbed a slce of cake for the road back to his deer stand. I told people who questioned me choosing that date, "I don't hunt. My groom doesn't hunt. His grandfather (who officiated) doesn't hunt. Everyone else is optional!"

My husband and I had a fall wedding in early November (in Texas) so the weather was a gorgeous 70 degrees, we filled the church with fall leaves and flowers. Bridesmaids wore brown, groomsmen wore brown ties, and the cake was a lovely cream color with brown ribbons on each tier and fall leaves on each layer. My aunt made it, and it was lovely, but not professionally done. All the same, I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful time, or a more beautiful cake.
You could always pester--er, ask a bride-to-be to let you help plan her fall wedding. ;) Lovely cakes, as always.
Ooooooo Pretty cakes!! If I ever get in another relationship (the last ended badly so not likely) I would have a Fall wedding with hayrides, a bonfire etc....it seems to me Fall gives so many more options, also, having an "off season" wedding makes travel plans cheaper!
I went to a wedding and while the cake wasn't Sunday sweet's worthy it was great, and they had leaves for the flower girl, and a Cider and Hot Chocolate bar.
Do I actually have to get married to have a wedding cake? Ugh.
I love the 8th cake and the last one the most. I wouldn't cry if ANY of them showed up on my table though- unless I'd ordered the zombie wedding cake posted some time back. ;)
You forgot to mention spice cake or pumpkin spice cake as a reason to have a fall wedding. yum
We just celebrated our 10th anniversary on Friday. Our wedding was by candlelight and we had lit carved pumpkins with our names, "Love" and our wedding date all through out. To make it even more special, my husband proposed by carving "Will You Cory Marry Me Brian?" into a pumpkin and had it lit outside of my parents' house on Halloween. Awww.
Of course, Autumn is a wonderful time to get married! In fact, today is Hubby's and my 34th wedding anniversary. We were gifted with an extraordinarily beautiful, warm day in 1978 and today wasn't half bad either! (We spent the day at the zoo. :D)
BTW, all the cakes today are fabulous, but the Martha Stewart cake just takes my breath away! Simplicity at its most elegant. :)

Another fall bride here. Our cake was vanilla spice with an apple cider glaze between the layers. It was relish and so pretty, covered with sugered real mini apples, pears and cranberries. We made over 100 caramel apples for our favors, that was seven years ago tomorrow and I still haven't had another caramel apple.

Loved all the lovely fall cakes. Unfortunately, my fall wedding cake got delivered to the wrong wedding venue and I got their's by mistake. And, similar to Sara's comment, it was the first game of the 1975 World Series and Luis Tiant was pitching for our Red Sox. Needless to say, no one cared about the cake because they were all watching the game in the bar, including my husband. But when we celebrate our anniversary, we always wonder what Bill and Hilary are doing that day to celebrate and watch the video of George Carlin host the first SNL (since videos of weddings weren't "invented", yet.)
Me, again! Forgot to mention a very important "fall" detail. I chose orange qiana fabric long dresses for the bridesmaids (hey-orange was a pretty available color in the 70's.) But I didn't want the bridesmaids to wear hats and the dresses were kind of halter-top, so chose matching cover-ups with a hood to wear as they walked down the aisle. Wouldn't you know that 2 mos. before the wedding, Squeaky Frome tries to assassinate Gerald Ford and wears a hooded robe. Those bridesmaid dresses were quite the conversation piece for those that weren't watching the Red Sox game.
I wouldn't have minded a fall wedding....of course, since I only got engaged about 4 months ago and the only thing I ever had planned for my wedding since boys still had cooties was making my own dress, that's not happening. Plus premarital counseling requirements at my church would make that a tough deadline. So I'm going in June instead. Nearly all of the weddings in my extended family over the last several years have been in fall or spring anyway, so I guess going in summer makes me a rebel! But that one daisy-ish cake (not the bee one, the one-tiered one) looks like it might help me out, since I'm also being a rebellious summer bride and having sunflowers anyway. (It is shockingly hard to find non-fall sunflower cake inspiration!)
We're getting married in a little under 3 weeks in Texas (near San Antonio) at a 150+ old dance hall that we hang out at all the time. You're totally invited. Seriously...
The cakes won't be this fancy, but we're doing a spice cake with cream cheese icing with nutmeg mixed in it for mine and I'm making red velvet for the groom's cake. You're welcome to crash the wedding. :)

I'm getting married in 25 days...OMG...wow sorry....anyways LOVE this post. The second cake is the perfect inspiration cake for how I want mine to look. I'm just having the bottom 2 tiers be square. Will send you a picture next month because Flor does AMAZING work. Chocolate Passion in Conroe TX is who I'm using and her buttercream work is stunning.
One year ago today, my son and daughter-in-law were married on a beautiful autumn day in Wisconsin. Not really a fall-themed wedding, but gorgeous and tons of fun, all the same. Hanging out on the veranda at the reception for a fall wedding is totally da bomb.
Today's cakes are beautiful, especially the last one.

Today (10/22) is actually our anniversary. And we got married in a timy church in the middle of the Apple Fest. So we had beautiful outdoor leaf pictures, Apples for everyone, and a bagpiper.
And then had a wedding party on HALLOWEEN!!
Congrats guys, you just made me reconsider my steadfast decision to have a wedding in the spring.

Hehehe...so sorry, but we can't extend the invite that far to everyone. :( Jen and John are still welcome, although be warned, it's a very large german farming community / Texas old school wedding. It's at an old wooden dancehall where men still tip the brim of their hats when greeting a lady.
I just came from a fall wedding. Another reason to have a fall wedding is that everyone who's driving in from out of town will get treated to spectacular fall colors on the way there. :)
Went to a fall wedding two weeks ago. The favors were small jars of apple butter. TOO yummy. Thankfully there were extras, which we were encouraged to take with. We did. The cake was pumpkin spice, yummy too. Flowers were fall color inspired. Loved the whole concept.

Some great ideas... but I got married the week before this post! (That last cake, "J+A" was perfect-- that's our initials!). It wasn't fall-themed (our colours didn't match), and poured rain most of the day (so no outdoor photos), but I still love fall weddings. Warm weather, gorgeous trees, great light, and more. If you had posted this back in the spring, I would have used your ideas for cake flavours...
Giggling at the "no fall wedding due to football" posts. This rabid Red Sox fan merrily planned an October wedding without a second thought...until it was May, and the Sox were having an outstanding start to the '03 season. I said to my then-fiance, "Just you wait. We're going to make the playoffs, and the day of our wedding, it'll be a Red Sox-Yankees game during the reception, with Martinez vs. Clemens pitching." We had a beautiful fall wedding...during exactly that game.
