Sunday Sweets: Winter Wonders
This week John and I have been visiting the frigid tundra of the frozen north: Williamsburg, Virginia. At one point it even dipped down to 39 degrees, so I think you'll agree we've endured what no human being should ever be subjected to.
So, in the spirit of my freezing Floridian tootsies, allow me to present some incredible icy Sweets for your New Year's Day:
By Mad Baker
We didn't see any snow this week - obviously it was just too cold - but even if we had I doubt it would've looked this delicious.
Check out the rock sugar border on this wintry beauty:

It's like an icy blast of GORGEOUS. Love it.
Speaking of gorgeous, ever heard of cake jewelry?
Well, me neither.
But that's what I've decided to call these dangling crystal whirly bits:
I'm also digging the frosted texture and spiky top tier.
Okey dokey, time for a cute fix:
D'awww.
Now all we need are some cute polar bears and maybe a walrus and an adorable little Eskimo or two.

I never thought a fish skeleton could be cute. And that submerged bear on the bottom? Genius.

So sweet!
Now, this next one *does* have Christmas lights on it...
...but in my defense, we leave our trees up 'til after New Year's anyway. And it's awesome.
Here's what I look like when it's below 60 degrees:

Note from john- It's 12:36 am on New Year's Day and Jen just fell asleep while writing this post. It's adorable, really. We spent all day with family at Busch Gardens and she's all tuckered out. But, there are only two cakes left so if it's okay with y'all, I'll finish up.

Cool.
See what I did there? It's like a pun!
This writing stuff is easy...
And so, in conclusion:
Glittery cardinals = Awesome.
I think we can all see why Jen does the writing. :)
Well, that's it for me. Just one more thing...
[kissing Jen on the forehead and whispering]
Happy New Year, baby.
And to the rest of you: have a fantastic New Year, and Wreck On!

Happy New Year Jen and John, what a cute post (both the cakes and John's comments!) x
D'awww, good save John.
Wishing you guys lots of fun wrecks in 2012, good health, and a plethora of Sunday Sweets. Thank you for entertaining us every day! :)
Happy New Year to ya'll too.
Those might be my favorite cakes EVER! But Jen, 39 is NOT cold. I keep my house at 60, so I guess you don't want to come and visit... But I'd bake you a cake!
I call Epcot...the First Nation Peoples of the north prefer "Inuit" to the fairly offensive "Eskimo"
[Editor's note- Hi RobynR. Interestingly enough, the term "Eskimo" is actually quite acceptable in some cases since not all of the native people of the Northern regions are Inuit. In fact, to call a person who is Yupik an Inuit would be offensive. I love getting comments like this because I can take the opportunity to read up on the situation and educate myself. I never want to be a person who takes up offenses where none exist. Here's a great article for further reading: http://tulugaq.wordpress.com/inuit-vs-eskimo/ -john]
Happy New Year to a blog that always makes me smile!
Happy New Year to you both! Jen you poor thing...39...how terrible that must be for you.
I wish you could have been here for Snowmageddon. Or the next round, Snowpocolypse.
Happy New Year, guys!
Cakes #3, 4, 6, and the last one = MINE!
Why'd she take the poor polar bear apart like that?
Happy New Year.
John! Stop it! You're spoiling us for the regular men out there!
You two are so cute.
Happy New Year!
You know what eskimos get from sitting on the ice all the time? You guessed it -- polaroids. Happy New Year all, from Portland Oregon, where it's a positively balmy 34 degrees.
i just wanted to say: Awwwwww and happy new year
Happy New Year! May blessings be heaped upon you in the new year.
Jen, you're a lucky woman.
John, you're a lucky man.
Happy New Year from one of your lucky readers -- Now, I neeeeed that penguin cake STAT, for my wonderful hubby. (He'd write my blog if I wrote one.)
It's nice to finally see a cake here that I've had the pleasure of eating. Tim, from Amanda Oakleaf cakes, is one of the best cake decorators I know.
I think Jen and John are the Sunday Sweets this week!
What a beautiful way to start a new year!
Are you sure you wanted to come home? It's supposed to be 47 with a low of 23 on Tuesday. Granted I do live in Northern Florida which explains a lot.
Those are some of the most adorable 'icy' cakes I've seen (wait...I've never seen icy cakes before but those are cool)!
The 7th cake with the snowman and Christmas lights is probably one of my favorites on this post- I also love the red cardinal one, how ornate!
I live in the chillly state of New York; I understand why you're not used to chilly temps. 39 degrees is quite warm in the winter where I live- it's supposed to be 19 degrees on the day I get BACK from winter break (Tuesday). Is it possible for schools to close because it's too cold out? I hope so. It was actually 43 yesterday on NYE- quite warm; I felt like running out the door without a heavy coat on but my mom quickly stopped me. :(
Last cake: put a bird on it! :)
You two are too cute. Happy New Year!
Meanwhile in Idaho, it's a boiling 41 degrees.
P.S. You're still allowed to post Christmassy cakes. The Christmas season officially lasts until January 6th!
I don't know how long I have been a Cakewreck fan, but I think today's cakes are my full page favorites! Spectacular and cute on the same page. Happy New Years to you both and all the other Wreckies!
Beckie
Wuv, Twue Wuv, is wot Bwings us Togevuhh Today. Happy New Year!
Major awww's from the cake and authors :D
Aww, I love the Penguins!!!
How very sweet of John to finish the post!
Happy new year!
To think, my husband and I (native Minnesotans) have been complaining that Virginia is way too warm this winter! I was promised cold weather was a benefit to being pregnant in winter. Nonsense! Meanwhile, this is the sweetest Sunday Sweets ever. Happy New Year!
Thank you for a wonderful Sweet and a funny year. Happy New Year to you both and to all my fellow wreckies! Party in the Bunker! I'll bring the dip! :)
Best Sunday Sweets ever!!! Love, love, love the red sparkly cardinals. Happy New Year to you both, Jen and John
If the last one had the rock sugar border and then the frosted look of the jewelry cake it would be utter perfection. As it is, they're all awesome and I love that so many prove bold colors aren't needed to convey excitement. :)
A safe, peaceful, new year to all!
Can't pick a favorite; they're all so sweet! Happy New Year Jen and John and to all your readers!
Did you wait two hours to go on the flight of lights? 8D
Thanks for the WONDERFUL year of laughs and breath-taking Sundays - all the best for many more in 2012!
Woah woah woah! You were in Williamsburg this week?!? Me too!!! This is crazy - I might have seen you! Woah!
If you went to Colonial Williamsburg and saw a girl in a big blue silk dress with a dark grey cape, that was me :)
Anywho, Happy New Year! :)
Beautiful cakes. And here in Denver, it's a high of 35 F -- short sleeve weather!
the tail end of this post = just one more reason all the gals have a crush on John
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, you two!!
that last cake is my new favorite! Love it! Awwww, John what a sweet ending to a Sunday Sweets post. Happy new year Cake Wrecks!!! Looking forward to a wrecky 2012.
It is called "cake jewelry," and it's very popular with brides down here in Texas. I'm just waiting for someone to come up with cupcake jewelry -- smaller bites = fewer calories (unless you scarf down half the pan). Happy New Year -- looking forward to the 2012 wrecks!
John, you brought a little tear to my eye!
The cardinals are very appropriate because they're the state bird of Virginia!
Aww, I feel like I need to whisper (in my head) as I read the comments.
What beautiful cakes. A great way to start the year. There are a few things I am removing from my life as the year starts. CakeWrecks is NOT one of them. You are firmly planted on my happy and uplifting list. Thank you for a daily smile. I hope you have a wonderful new year.
@Annie -- regular men?? I'm as regular as they get (that's not TMI, y'all know what I mean). I'd finish a blog for my Sweetheart.
@Susie Snortum -- 'polaroids'. LOL.
@Nebula -- I agree.
I agree with Jen on the temperature as well. 59 degrees is when 'cold' begins.
Happy 2012 to Jen, John (thoJ), the CW crew, everyone at the Department Of Corrections and all my fellow commenters. [Hmm -- spell check flagged 'commenters'. What is the collective term for 'those who comment'? 'Comment board denizens' seems a bit formal.]
From sunny Southern California, where it is currently (I am not kidding) 82 degrees. I'm not smug -- the 'high' not too many days ago was in the low 50's and could be again at any time. I'm lovin' this while it lasts, though.
Sunshine Mary, I think the polar bear is supposed to be floating! C=
I hope you enjoyed ChristmasTown, it is one of our favorite holiday things to do. Unfortunately we were there several weeks ago (the kiddos had to see Santa BEFORE Christmas, they're kinda picky that way). The rest of Williamsburg is particularly beautiful this time of year too. Beautiful cakes and liked the split post; it was sweet!
Jen, I hate to tell you this, but it will be under 30 in central Florida on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning... I personally am super excited, but I know you will be sad
Happy Healthy Hysterically funny Wrecktastic NEw YeaR. Thanks for the laughs ( and tears lol ) and i look forward to reading your blog(*s) through out the year!
John... well done! lol
Love this post! And John, your writing (and freaking ADORABLE comments about your wife) were awesome.
It's getting to down to 9 (yea.. NINE....) here tonight in Duluth. Fun times. Fun times. LOL
That third cake is absolutely S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G and I am in love.....
GREAT POST!
Happy New Year to Cake Wrecks!
How dare you, Jen and John! How dare you stay in my town, and visit MY Busch Gardens without stopping at my house and having dinner and drinks! For shame, you two! For shame!
P.S. Did ya like Christmastown? :D
awww ... the sweetest post ever!.
Happy 2012 y'all!
