What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Cake Wrecks "Winter Underlined" Tour

The day has finally arrived, loyal minions! I can now officially announce our third "world" tour lineup, and make at least three quarters of you mad that we're not visiting your city! WHOOHOOOO!!!

See, here's the thing:

The thing is, we're not flying this time. With the general awful, stressful, germ-exposing experience that is flying these days - not to mention airport "security" ridiculousness - we're just not up for it.

So, we're driving instead.

And, since we only have a limited amount of time between when the book publishes and when book stores stop allowing authors to appear because of the holidays, we're not going to make it out to the west coast this time.

But - BUT - we are going to 16 cities, most of which we've never been to before! And Canada! We're going to Canada!

So without further ado, here's our tour line-up:

- Atlanta, GA 10/18/11 (Tuesday) at the Buckhead Barnes & Noble, 7 pm

- Charlotteish, NC (Concord) 10/20/11 (Thursday) at the Concord Books-A-Million, 6:30 pm

- Richmond, VA 10/21/11 (Friday), Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Baltimore, MD 10/22/11 (Saturday), Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- Philadelphiaish, PA (Exton) 10/24/11 (Monday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Hartford, CT 10/25/11 (Tuesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Bostonish, MA (Brookline) 10/27/11 (Thursday) Brookline Booksmith, 7pm

- Montreal, Quebec 10/29/11 (Saturday) Indigo Books, 2pm

- Toronto, Ontario 11/01/11 (Tuesday) Indigo Books, 7pm

- Pittsburghish, PA (Homestead) 11/03/11 (Thursday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Chicagoish, IL (Winnetka) 11/06/11 (Sunday) The Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 2pm

- St. Louis, MO 11/07/11 (Monday) Left Bank Books (Downtown location), 7pm

- Memphis, TN 11/09/11 (Wednesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Dallasish, TX (Fairview) 11/11/11 (Friday) A Real Bookstore, 7pm

- Houston, TX 11/13/11 (Sunday) Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- New Orleans, LA 11/15/11 (Tuesday) Garden District Book Shop, 7pm

- And Orlando. Probably. Maybe. We're working on it.

As before, our tours will include a show by John and yours truly, lots of laughs, free cake, a wreckplica cupcake contest, prizes, and an all-night rave party with your fellow wreckies. (We'll vote on whose house once we get there.) Also, I might be lying about the rave party. But I might not be, either.

We've worked very hard to ensure that every show will be free for you to attend - something that is becoming a rarity these days, since book stores now often charge for author signings. (Yes, really - and that was news to me, too.) So, bring the kids! Bring your friends! Don't make me and John eat all this cake by ourselves!

(Though if no one shows up, I totally will. And I'll wash it all down with my salty, salty tears.)

Speaking of which: bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services for a show near you, please e-mail me! It's a great way to show off your mad skilz to local cake-lovers, and we promise to give you lots of props at the show and here on the blog. (Sorry, professional bakers only, please!)

And west coast, I'm sorry we're missing you this time. I truly am. If it helps any, it's possible we'll be doing something out your way next year, so try not to despair *too* much.

We'll be publishing separate event pages soon to collect RSVPs and give you all the specifics for each city, so 'til then, mark your calendars, and start planning those wreckplicas!

Update from john: To those of you asking about detours and inbetween stops, we would absolutely love to. But we literally don't have time.  For example, on Friday the 22nd, we drive from Charlotte to Ricmond and do a show at 7pm.  After the show, we get back in the car and drive from Richmond to Baltimore to get ready for a show the next day at 2.  It's crazy but coordinating bookstores and dates and drive times leaves us with a slightly absurd schedule.  It's a little over 6,000 miles in 34 days with about 100 hours of driving.

Also, sometimes finding a bookstore that could work with the schedule required us to go a little outside the cities.  For instance, the Chicago stop is actually about 30 minutes north of the city.  It's the best we could do.

And finally, to our awesome European readers, we will get there someday.  Maybe even next year depending on schedule. I've always wanted to do a road trip through Europe.

Thanks and Wreck On!

john (the hubby of Jen)

I so wish you were coming to Minneapolis! I know Fargo is too much to ask, but c'mon - Minneapolis!??!? It'd be warmer than Canada!!! :)

My heart sank the second I read that you won't be going to the West Coast.. so I think next year you should skip the East Coast and focus on us Westies, specifically those near McChord AFB, Tacoma WA.
Also, you crack me up. I was reading and thinking "Oh she's silly, a rave at someone's house..", then I literally laughed out loud, quite loudly, at "And I'll wash it all down with my salty, salty tears." Oh Jen! You silly pants.. I don't know why, but that was just the funniest thing ever. I think the double salty was the reason.
Keep up the awesome!

This travel schedule looks crazy! I can't believe you're going to be able to do all that driving, signing, laughing, eating, having fun and still be able to fit some sleep in there! I'm sad that you will not be near us, but I will definitely be praying for safety and sanity for you!

Hi Jen! I just want to say Thanks for coming up to Canada on this tour. i'm on the west coast so I won't get to see you this time. But I really appreciate on behalf of my fellow Canadians that you guys are driving up. I hope you have a fantastic time on the tour.

Yay, Even though you will be on the other side of town here in Charlotte, I will totally be there. Can't wait to meet you.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen B

You'll be in Chicago one afternoon and don't have to be in St. Louis until the next evening and you're driving? Yup, absolutely no reason you can't have breakfast or lunch with me in Champaign, IL. Have your people call my people.

What? No Austin? You couldn't stop here on your way from Dallas to Houston? Come on, throw in a stop at Book People...or even B&N. The one in the Arboretum has a nice little coffee shop and very, very close to The Cheesecake Factory which, of course, has yummy cheesecake. And cakes is cakes :)

And underneat that

I'm so excited that you're giving Dallas another chance! Calendar is officially marked for 11/11/11!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

No NYC stop?! You're just going to drive from Philly to Hartford? I know parking is a (rhymes with "witch") in Manhattan but, but, but...

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJ.

Hooray! See you in Boston.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercc

How very exciting! I hope you don't get too much grief for where you can't make it, but just remember that anyone who complains is just a heart broken fan....so I suppose complaints are a good thing, eh? :)

I am no where close to any of those places, so I will just have to show you my support here and in the form of online book sales. :)

I am so proud of you both, I hope your success continues and you continue to make me snort coffee out of my nose daily.

Good luck in everything!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Dear West Coast USA,

Don't feel too bad... they've never been outside of continental America in any of their 'World' Tours!

Welcome to the real of the world

The UK

PS. Jen and John, am not gripping, honest. I know you are not a fan of flying. Just find it kind of funny that you felt the need to apologise just to the US citizens that you will be missing out when they have at least had the chance to come see you!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterScotland

When you come back out west be sure to swing by Salt Lake City! We'll make sure to make lots of merman cakes just for you!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterannie_a

When you are driving between Toronto and Pittsburgh you can come to my house in Syracuse! It's only a little out of your way . . .What's a few hours if there are drinks with umbrellas?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

Can you be more specific about the Hartford location? I'm hungry for cake already!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterColleen

YAY!!!!!! Canada!!!!!!!! Toronto!!!!! Yay!!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertjbmurph

Oh man! I promised the kids we would go this time as long as it is driving distance from Colorado. Guess it's not happening. Anyone want to break the news for me?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

Hooray! Glad to see that Dallas hasn't scared you too badly.

Stay safe on your tour and enjoy the views and crazy weather! It'll be totally different between here and Canada.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMay

I'm so happy you're going back to Texas after it tried to kill John! Of course, you're not going to my state, but you can't win them all. :-)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCookieD'oh

Maybe you should plan a trip to San Diego... that might just coincide with Comic Con... just sayin ;) Good luck on your tour!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

:( Sadface. You're doing Richmond and Baltimore, and driving right through DC this time and not stopping off.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

Hooray, hooray, hooray! You're coming to Brookline Booksmith, my fav little local indie bookstore (sorry, Cambridge folks). Must go mark date on calendar NOW.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-with-an-e

YES!!! You are coming to a city near enough for me to get to!
WOOHOO!!!
Cake, snarkiness, sarcasm, possible geeky fun; WHAT MORE COULD A GIRL ASK FOR?
Oh I would totally pay to come see you...but the free thing is awesome. :D

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGween

Great, great news! Road trips rock by the way :) Just emailed you for Pittsburgh, please don't hold it against me that I do CCC's! Gasp! LOL

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTammy (Faithfully Cakes)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenternessa

The East coast is so lucky! Maybe I can get my sister to attend on my behalf....

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarie-Eve Lohman

Ok. Totally bummed now. How can you come to Canada and NOT come to the Nation's Capital city? You're in Montreal on saturday and don't have to be in Toronto until Tuesday. You could TOTALLY fit in a stop in Ottawa on Sunday or Monday.... :P

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShelagh

OMG! You're coming to Toronto!! YAY!!!

...but I'll be 39 weeks pregnant....

Has anyone gone into labour at at one of these things before??

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKat

@Steph- maybe if we start planning now, we can get a Twin Cities caravan for the Chicago stop. Or we can have our own wreck party here and wash our cake down with those salty, salty tears.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

YAY!!! You'll be in Charlotte!! Happy Happy Joy Joy!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

Your going to be in St. Louis! That might be doable, it's only three hours from here. If your in St. Louis you can't miss the City Museum (at least google it), wear sneakers and jeans and go wear your selves out pretending to be 12 years old again. Its the best place ever. And then it looks like your driving from there to Memphis so your stopping at the original Lamberts to eat right? Or are you coming to see me in Metropolis and our giant Superman statue? It's just a small detour.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Obligatory "OMG why aren't you coming to Cincinnati?!?!?!??!!?!1111??" post. (Seriously, I'd let y'all crash on my couch.)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWinona

Ok, sorry to be a nitpicker, but Winnetka, IL is not Chicago, IL. :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Glad you're coming to Canada! See you in Toronto on November 1 - Cake Wrecks is the BEST!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary Frances

Since you're going to be in Canada, and you'll be soooo close to New Brunswick, why not come to Saint John? I'd be there!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCindy

Woohoo dallas!! See u then :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

If you need any help with French in Montreal, I will volunteer my interpreting skills.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThereseC

I'm going to Boston on holiday in October....when do I fly back to the UK? Yup, the day before you get there....sigh........

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

You're coming to Exton! That's only an hour from me! I'm not great at cake baking, so I'll bring you some cookies instead. is that okay?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoanna

EEK! Richmond VA?!?! Cake Wrecks?!?! TOTALLY a reason to take off work... now.. which excuse to use? SIck? Kid is sick? Some long lost family member died?! Oh the options.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCrystal

What about your fellow Floridians? You've got to drive through Florida to start the tour in Atlanta. Why not stop in Gainesville? *wink wink* You do have to drive right through it to get to Atlanta. Or maybe you could come up and do an event one weekend. Please?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

BOOOO! No San Antonio? Don't y'all realize we're one of the fattest cities in the nation? WE LOVE CAKE AND CAKE WRECKS!!!!!
Now I'll have to schlep to Houston on a Sunday. Thanks a lot, Jen and the husband of!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterD

Toronto hardly counts as Canada. It's where Americans go when they want to say "Oh, I've been to Canada."
