Sunday Sweets: Ode to Dragon*Con

Loyal henchpersons, there are only four days left until Dragon*Con, the big East Coast geek-fest we attend every year in Atlanta, and I AM SO EXCITED.
So let me apologize in advance for the blistering amount of geek glee I'm about to blast you with; I just can't help it. I'll be with you soon, my people! SOOOON!!
Let's start things off with a bang, shall we?
Submitted by Stacey T., made by Bleeding Heart Bakery
Or more like an "EXTERMI-CAKE!" Because yes, it's really cake.
I've had requests for more fondant-free Sweets, so check this old-school Sonic action out:
Sub'd by Elizabeth M., made by SonicTheHedgehawk
Those smooth areas may look like fondant, but they're actually icing. It's a technique called run-out, flooding, or color-flow, depending on who you ask, and it has a glass-smooth texture that I just love - no fondant required!
I've always said I love marshmallow icing:
Sub'd by Crystal Q., made by Cakes That Make You Go Mmm
I see the chocolate and the marshmallow - now where's the giant graham cracker? ;)
Penny Arcade is a video game-centered webcomic that looks almost exactly like this:
...only usually less edible.
Plus, the two guys who produce Penny Arcade are also the creators of PAX, the big gaming convention taking place in Seattle at this very moment. Holla, gamer geeks!
Oh, and check out this detail:
I never thought I'd be in awe of pants pleats before, but there you have it.
And now for a little Battlestar Galactica:
Submitted by Ruth Ann F. and made by Kandy Cakes (link expired - anyone have a new one?)
Think they needed toasters to make that? (Heh. Aheh. Heh.)
Conventions always have lots of Anime which I don't claim to follow or understand, but it all sure looks adorable:
Sub'd by Tammy, made by Baking Obsession
Pokémon!
(If you're not familiar, the character in the middle, Pikachu, is what all the hot girls in yellow bikinis dress as.)
Love Star Wars *and* LEGO? Then have I got the cake for you!
Even the figure is edible. Awesome.
Here's a cake from one of my very favorite video games:
Sub'd by Brandi A., made by Mike's Amazing Cakes
So. Cool.
It's the Space Personality Core from Portal.
(Spaaaaaaaace.)
Which reminds me. Have you seen the Wheatley puppet? Huh? Have you?! I'm hoping to spot him and his creator at D*C. Fingers crossed!
Care to seek out new worlds...hand painted on cake?
Submitted by Sue B. and made by a matter of taste
Simply...engaging.
And finally, you Epbot readers know of my continuing love affair with steampunk, which I hope to see a lot of in Atlanta. Well, check out this beauty:
By Emily of Border City Cakes, photo by NCS Photography
Great gears and leather and pipes, oh my! Even the fabric ruffle and netting are edible - just spectacular.
If any of you fellow geeks will also be at Dragon*Con this weekend, you should know that we'll be playing "Find Jen and win a prize" again this year. Go here for details, and I hope to see you there!
Also, good news! After many, MANY requests, we've finally assembled a Sunday Sweets directory. Now you can see which professional bakers we've featured in your area! (Note that listing in the directory does not indicate our endorsement, and that we've only included pro bakers accepting orders, as opposed to home hobby bakers.)
Happy browsing!

Oh what darling geeky cakes you found-they look great :D
Actually, while that Portal 2 Sweet is indeed an awesome cake, it's actually of the Space Sphere. Not Wheatley. Just to clarify.
[Editor's note- Thanks. I knew that yet still missed it. Just fixed it. -john]
The Pokemon cake: Pokemon is the collective term for the little animals that do battle. Pikachu is the cute yellow rat that the bikini-clad girls are emulating.
What? I have boys! They love that show.
[Editor's note- Bwoops. All fixed. Thanks for the heads up. -john]
Given all the gears and the octopus, I'm not sure that isn't a steampunk cake as seen through the eyes of Regretsy.
If I may get a little geeky here, and I'm sure I may, the limited movement of the Wheatley puppet is understandable, given that they had to cheat in the game to get him to work. As shown he couldn't physically move the way he does.
So...how are you holding up?
I went to check out bakeries in m state, Ohio, and you've got sleepyrobot13 listed as a bakery, so I went to the site. It's an Etsy store for hand sculpted robots... does not appear to be a bakery or a baker at all. Might want to double check that.
[Editor's note- How did that get it there? Huh. Thanks for the heads up. -john]
Oh, wow. I need to turn in my geek membership card - I had no idea DragonCon was so close! (4 hours away is close, right?) We're saving for Ohayocon, which will be *before* tax refunds come next year (for the first time), so I don't think we can swing it for a day trip this year. Sure would be a great surprise for my guys, though! Hmmm.... OK, anybody got a way to earn $250 by next Saturday?!
Love the steampunk cake! So utterly awesome.
Can't WAIT for Dragon*Con!!!!!! Also, did you know there's a steampunk exibition at Kew Bridge Steam Museum in London? they have pictures on their website!!! I want to go to there, lol.
Adore the Penny Arcade cake! I think my husband (also a John) is going to want that one for his next birthday/our anniversary/Labor Day celebration.
Ahhh, only a few days till D*C, and I'm still way behind on all my costumes! I love that you made this post~ :D I'm ready to get my geek on!
I loved this post. I've never been all that fond of the daleks themselves but that is one great cake. I have a number of geek friends who read my Live Journal so I posted a link to this page as I know they will enjoy it also. (My LJ is where I share the things that make me laugh, smile, chuckle so this blog entry was perfect for it.)
Those are so amazing! It's fitting that I look at these gorgeous cakes while drinking my coffee before heading off to Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). You've already kickstarted my morning with geekiness!
We don't have DragonCon (jealous on that count), but we do have PAX and Emerald City Comic Con. If you're going to visit the Northwest. both are now incredible cons and major events in and of themselves, so give it some thought! I'd love to see a nice little Wreckie!Meet dinner or something around here someday.
I suppose
Since I don't tweet, I guess I won't be able to find you except in the Con Suite. As long as it isn't the same time with my meet and greet with Stan Lee anyway. Stan wins. Still have to go pack an decide if we are driving the jeep or the submarine after all this rain thanks to Irene. So can not wait to go again
!!
And love the cakes. LOL
Ooo....! I especially LOVE the fondant-free Sonic and the painting on the Star Trek and steampunk cakes. It's true, fondant can do amazing things, but it just doesn't always have the same soul.
Also, toasters. Haha.
I can't believe I'm such a huge geek I not only got all the jokes, I have officially had the octopus on that rockin' steampunk cake ruined for me by Regretsy... PS: "EXTERMI-CAKE?" Awesome.
I am constantly amazed by your Sunday post! There are some VERY talented individuals out there!
I gasped in utter delight at the Dalek cake. Really.
Yay, a dalek cake! That's perfect timing, since the season premiere of "Dr. Who" was last night--um, except there were no daleks in that episode. But, who cares? Yay, a dalek cake!
Enjoying the geek. Great cakes.
I LOVED the Dalek cake--and I particularly loved that it was a "classic" Dalek, as opposed to these Skittle-colored ones. Just not as menacing, somehow.
A friend of mine is going to PAX, and I am SO jealous!
And, yes, I am very familiar with Pokemon and Pikachu, since my 8-year-old daughters loves all things Pokemon, and one of them wants to dress up as Pikachu for Halloween. The other one asked Crush the Sea Turtle (from Finding Nemo) in the popular "Talk With Crush" attraction at Disneyland what his favorite Pokemon was.
Heh. The best part about the Penny Arcade cake to me is that it's not quite on-model; Tycho in particular looks like he's trying out for a cameo in "Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff", which is way funnier than if he were a perfect likeness.
Thanks for the link to the Wheatley puppet too; I visit a gaming site that often links to stuff like that, but I hadn't seen that one before.
"Pikachu, is what all the hot girls in yellow bikinis dress as."
Really? I always thought they were supposed to be Lum.
Those Daleks used to freak me out as a kid. I may not have been as terrified of them had I known they were made of cake.
LOVE LOVE LOVE that Pokemon cake! We have a bit of a Pokemon obsession here in my house. My hubby & I have recently started watching all of the old episodes... on VHS, which I found at a yard sale for 25 cents each :) Even thinking of dressing our 10 month old as pikachu for Halloween! I'll be 21 in a few weeks, and would LOVE to have a cake like that for my birthday!
As a recent Doctor Who convert, I absolutely ADORE the Dalek cake! Now, if someone could do one that good in the image of the Tenth Doctor... well, that might just be too yummy to eat. ;)
I know I am being awfully pedantic, but Pokemon is first and foremost a video game series from Nintendo that started in 1995, and is still going strong to this day. The strangely more well-known anime started a few years later. Hence, that is actually a gamer cake, and NOT an anime cake. =D (I am 25 and I want it for myself ^^ ). Love the other cakes too; they're all so well made! :)
:O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O
............................................
Where did my jaw GO?!?!?!?!?!
These are EPIC!!!
AHHHHHHH!!!! So. Utterly. AWESOME. XD XD
Lucy
I *just* got back from Fan Expo Canada in Toronto. This was a perfect way to wrap up my day!
I absolutely LOVE the Star Trek and Steampunk cakes!! AMAZING WORK!!!
Some of those steampunks at DragonCon will be my friends... I love that the steampunk cake also has the six legged octopus also popular on Regretsy.com!
Beautiful cakes!
I heard Paul and Storm are playing Dragon*con this year. I'm so sad I can't go to see them, they're always good for a belly laugh.
Have fun!
Fraking awesome!!
So say we all.
'someone 'splain the toaster one plz. >whoosh - overmyhead<
If you get a chance, come to the Endless photoshoot at Hardly Ivy Park at 1:30pm on Friday. I'll be there in a costume that the entire external portion is at least theoretically edible. Fondant, gelatin, royal, gumpaste, etc. I'm hoping it survives long enough to wear it during one of the evening costume parties, but I'll absolutely be there in it.
diddy,
In BG, the humans referred to the Cylons disparagingly as "frakking toasters", to denote their mechanical status. I believe that is what Jen is referencing obliquely.
great cakes! i'm partial to the star trek one myself.
sadly i won't be at dragon-con this year (or any other, it looks like) i went in '09 &'10, which was more than enough for my brother. i have to be content with reading everyone's posts about it and sharing what knowledge i have on the event to people who have never gone.
OMG! Has anyone other than me read The Parasol Protectorate series? That last cake completely reminded me of an organization of scientists call the Hypocras Club (I believe). Their emblem is an octopus. That's awesome! :D
Love all these cakes especially the cute Battlestar Galactica cake. Ahh I loved the original show even if I always thought the cylons looked like talking toasters. But I digress..
Thank you for posting my Star Trek painted cake. I was horrified when I was advised that one of my cakes was featured on Cake Wrecks. At least Malta is now on Cake Wrecks' map.

CAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!
CAAAAAAAAKE!
I'm a cake.
I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know let's go to space
In case you haven't seen it, some people have pulled the entire audio for the personality cores, including the space core's audio. :-)
3 days 'til Dragon*Con!!
wow! that dalek one is amazing!! i LOVE the daleks, i think they are my favorite villains EVER!!
Love the space cake design!! Such creativity.
Stuart
Must. Have. Dalek. Cake!
(And Matt Smith to come share it with me...*swoon*)

YEAH! DRAGON*CON! I am so excited I could just scream! AHHHHHHH! Phew, glad I got that out. The excitement is just added to by your post--icing on the cake (see what I did there!) Before I reach my post limit for exclamation points.... I'll be looking for you around the con. I'm sure we're bound to run into one another. After all It's just us and 40,000 other friends! LOL. I'll be wearing my Starfleet regulation bouffant!
xoxo

Ah Jen! I confess, I'm not a Dragon Con geek, but your enthusiasm is the same as mine in the days leading up to MY mecca of geekiness....The scrapbook expo! Aren't we so lucky to have these wonderful obsessions that bring us such happiness?
You guys... don't.... like... Pokemon? =( My husband and I are 26 and still play the games on our DS's.
