What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Edible Ink

We always like our Sweets to make a lasting artistic impression, so here are some inspired by...lasting artistic impressions.

AKA, tattoos:

By amycakes

Sweet, colorful, graphic - what's not to love?

Those Koi fish are tat-too cute!

This one was inspired by tribal tattoo designs:

Stunning!

And I'm in LOVE with this tribal butterfly design:

Here's the side view:

I vow to make every cake in this shape from now on. Super cool.

This high-roller cashed in on old-school poker tattoos:

Cha-CHING!

And this little firecracker is exploding with cuteness:

No design means more to dear old Mom than this traditional favourite:

The detail on this hand-painted Ed Hardy wedding cake is amazing:

Handpainted, guys! Seriously!

Classic tattoo motifs also make for a sweet wedding cake:

And yet another wedding cake that really says "till death do us part..."

...and then some.

I like the wash of colors on this cascade design:

Of course, not all tattoos are in color. Still, who knew a monochromatic design could look this sweet on cake?

Simply beautiful.

I love that this one takes a flat medium and renders it in 3D:

In fact, every little detail on this cake makes me love it more. Awesome.

And finally, I was nearly knocked out of my chair when I saw this tattooed beauty:

Holy molasses! The roses, the neon colors, the hand-painted topsy tiers... I'm in love.

Check out all the detail:

The outlining on the roses even makes them seem more 2D. So clever!

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Jen if you get that tattoo so will I

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Nope. To me, it's like they're all covered in skin.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterreg

Lasting impressions, indeed! The last, with its shades-of-Dick-Tracy comics is my favorite, I think, though the two up in the middle with the tribal motifs are simply stunning.

Who would have ever thought to choose cakeatrices? Absolutely amazing.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterracheld

Oh how colorful :D

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow. WOW. I've been wanting to get more tattoo work (no money for it, sadly) and now I want tattoos AND cake. Thanks a lot, Cake Wrecks! ;)

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGeisha_Girl

If you hear a loud thump, that was my jaw hitting the floor on account of the last cake. Wow.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I'm not a tattoo person, but I have to say WOW.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

Beautiful!

I wonder if the did the outlining on the roses on the last cake by hand or by putting a stripe in the bag?

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterColleen

Love, love, love these! The roses on that last one made me grin from ear to ear, they're wonderful!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermin

OMG that last cake is Amazing!!!!! I love the roses with the black(that would make a good tattoo hmmmm)

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSara A.

I'm not a tattoo girl by nature, but I absolutely LOVE the black and white cake. Very chic.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersteveandonna

As a registered fish geek, I've got to say that both of the cakes featuring koi are wrecks for me. The fish are very crudely drawn, and very anatomically incorrect, on both of them.

I like the other cakes, though.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

apart from the first one (with proper Daiseys!),well executed but no, not for me.

Frankly I am not keen on the "dead whorehouse" look.

hope thats not too honest an opinion

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

Not a tattoo person either and these cakes aren't my style, but the artwork on the cakes is amazing. The last cake is a piece of art.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

*gasps for air*

I was never really into tattoos, but these... almost make me want some!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWhite

Wow!! This is by FAR my favorite Sunday Sweets post ever. Why didn't I think of a tattoo cake for my wedding???

Stunning, simply stunning. Would like to see pics of a woman (or man) with matching cake/skin tattoos.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThe Writing Goddess

Yes, wow, the detailing on those last roses makes it look like trompe-l'oeil even though it's not, which is layering the awesome upon the awesome!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly Chapman

Wow.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjellybeans

Most of that shows skill on the part of the decorators, but a lot of it seems a bit short on taste. And the red koi on a blue background look a bit deformed at first glance, due to the perspective and the shape of the cake.

The monochromatic koi cake seemed better at first glance, but the larger image, not so much. I like koi; I wanted it to be great. I am disappoint.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris Wright

Wow that last cake is a stunner! I may have to take inspiration from this post when I get my (hopefully several) tattoos. When I have money. Sigh. All the same, gorgeous post! I love, love, love tattoos and these are some truly gorgeous cakes! Thanks!

Incredible -- from the elegance of black and white to the complexly colorful and sometimes cartoonish, these are amazing! These awesome artistic interpretations of life -- and death -- reflect not only the skill of the artist but also the soul of the recipient.

They really are 3D tatoo cakes! My 9 year old daughter grabbed her 3D glasses (Crayola sidewalk chaulk glasses) and looked at the screen. The roses really do look like they are coming out of the screen. :-)

Makes me think about how you could also possibly have a tattoo wrecks site...

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Who IS Ed Hardy anyway? Is he an actual tattoo artist, or a fictional character Christian Whatsisname concocted to sell t-shirts?
That said, love the cakes...

(wv: dissers. No joke.)

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

To anonymous at 2:39 - there is a great site of tattoo wrecks at http://ugliesttattoos.failblog.org/ but be warned: while it is always hilarious, it is definitely, 100% not for kids or the workplace.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbibberly

Georgetown Cupcake could learn a huge lesson from these cakes!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

Stunners, every last one of 'em!

I can't help but adore those itty-bitty daisies on the first cake! And the hand-painting detail on those other cakes... JEALOUS!

I'm going to have to try that!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

This made my day. Completely. I now vow to make a cake someday that incoroporates all 12(+) of the tattoos I wanna get in it. (Sheet music... hibiscus flowers... seahorses... wings... It'll all work out somehow.)

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKara

hhmmm ... makes me wanna eat my own arm ... but that's not cake ofcourse, these beautiful cakes combine 2 of my favourite things, cake and tatts

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteramyandtenaya

How in the world do I convince people to buy me a tattoo cake, and then pay for the tattoos to match? Also, the artwork on the cake that got attributed to Ed Hardy should really get attributed to Sailor Jerry. Most classic "sailor" style tattoos (swallows, hearts, anchors, roses) is now designed from his work. But they were all gorgeous!

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterninjapigeon

these cakes are fantastic!

on an unrelated note..... i have been reading this blog for two years now and only just now read the FAQ because.... well, to understand everything on the blog i just read every single post in an evening of loneliness at university...... so i looked at the hobby lobby carrot jockey babies..... and i am slightly disturbed by the fact that the carrot jockey babies are described as white and the black baby (which, let's be honest here, looks more like an alien sea monkey and not a baby) is labeled as ethnic, because apparently all non-white peoples are made exactly alike and look like alien sea monkeys at birth.....

Think long and hard about getting a tattoo of a cake. Remember, your niche is CakeWRECKS.

Unless, of course, you want to have "with sprinkles under that" spelled out on your arm.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You absolutely need a tattoo of a tattoo cake! I mean, you make a living writing about cake. It just makes sense!

I know the blog is called Cake WRECKS but I love Sunday Sweets the best.

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEG

I love your color combinations :)

April 10, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbinbin

At first I was going to say I liked the monochromatic one better, but than I saw the last one. Wow...just beautiful.

April 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdorably Dead

Wow all of these cakes are so gorgeous. Makes me want to go out and get another tattoo..almost. All that gorgeous detail on that last cake have me gasping in awe.

April 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

those are beautiful. what an art.

April 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommentersaraH

Tattoos, cakes, oh my I'm in love!

April 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Circa 2050, one nursing home employee to another: "Tattoos must have been in style at one time. Seems like every second Alzheimer patient's butt I wipe, there's an old saggy tattoo on it. They've lost their marbles, their hair, their teeth, their bladder and bowel control, but they've still got whatever that tattoo used to be."

April 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjanet2buns

Simply wonderfully amazing I was drooling and when I saw the last cake I hit the floor! WOW!

April 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter~flying gurl~

I want the one with the koi!!!!!!! It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

May 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLydia
