What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Wrecky Replay: To Be Read By Rod Serling

Deedeedeedeeedeedeedeedee

You unlock this bakery with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension.

A dimension of icing.

A dimension of piping bags.

A dimension of wreckitude.

You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of bad taste and even worse skill. You just crossed over into...

The Twilight Zone.

BUM BUM BAAAAAHHHH...

Picture, if you will... a monkey. This monkey:

I know, creepy right? [shivering] Brrrrrr. Totally.

[resuming serious announcer voice] Ahem. Now picture, if you will, five ravenous-yet-dim-witted Shih Tzu dogs:

[sternly] Let's call them Muffy, Boopsie, Precious, Buttercup and Mr. Snuggles.

Now picture, if you will, a face of terror that watches in malignant silence far beyond your present capacity to understand. A face enigmatically bizarre in terms of time and space. A face...

...of a tweety bird.

Now picture, if you will, Meerkat Zombies...raising the roof.

"What up, playah?"

This is the stuff of fantasy, the thread of imagination, the ingredients... of the Twilight Zone.

 BUM BUM BAAAAAHHHHH... SQUEEDLEDEEEE!!!

Jennifer P., Matt N., Christine S., and Melanie L., picture, if you will... a dolphin eating a Snickers bar in flip-flops and a cardigan. Then tell me what that looks like. I've always wondered.

Note: A couple of people suggested the pictures should be in black and white which was an awesome idea. So we changed them. I think it adds to the ambiance, don't you? For those who really want to see the full color versions, click here.

UPDATE! LeAnna and Woobie took up the dolphin challenge and sent in their ideas.

First LeAnna's:
AWESOME! Check out the flip flop thongs on his flippers.

And next we have Woobie's
See, the snickers bar is wearing the cardigan and flip flops because I apparently have no grasp of sentence structure. ?thought Who would have

Touché!

One more!
This one's from Vanilla Smoke. Awesome!

Awesome! Totally Awesome! You have so much more fun in your job than I do in mine.

Good thing you had the links for the coloe pictures. I totally had to take your word on the Tweety bird cake in the black and white picture. It could have been anything... *shiver*

This is awesome. Would you like to know why? IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR THE TWILIGHT ZONE MARATHON ON SYFY. Which is, as everybody knows, the best part of New Year's.
(I have a mad crush on Rod Serling.)

Awww . . . the meerkats are standing in a field of poo in both black and white and color!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLightning Baltimore

Whose intestines are those meerkats frolicking in??? Mmmmmm I want a "bottom" piece!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMere

I love Woobie's drawing! Genius and silly all at once!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGoodOmens

Oh good grief, talk about Twilight Zone moments.... I checked in here this morning while an old "Cannon" episode was palying on tv... and just as i reached your BUM BUM BAAAAAHHHHH SQUEEDLEDEEEE, so did the orchestra on the show! Eerie echoes, to go along with the wreckorator-provided ones!

Super imagery.... Especially with the black and white. Excellently done!

I have utterly lost track of how many times I mutter, "What the hell IS that?" when viewing Cake Wrecks. Thank you.

Uh, the way you wrote the sentence, I imagined that the Snickers bar was wearing flip-flops and a cardigan... Not that that makes any more, or less, sense than a dolphin wearing flip-flops and a cardigan... (And why are they called flip-flops now? When I was growing up, they were called thongs and only worn when you were going to or from the swimming pool. I know that thongs are now underwear, but, oh, never mind...

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDonkaloosa

I'm dying to see your challenge as a cake now.

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJT

So much for the theory that everything looks better in black and white...

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKae

As soon as I saw the opening of this post, I just had to go to Youtube and find Manhattan Transfer's Twilight Zone, then read the post with it in the background. Awww...some!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSkeptic

I don't understand what those dolphin things have to do with cakes?

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

@Donkalooza, when I was growing up we called that footwear "zorries" - I never knew why. Flipflops was #2, thongs #3.

As to today's cakes: the monkey-face cake is actually very impressive technically. But yeah, I'd be too terrified to cut into it. And the Shih Tzu cupcakes ... how could anyone eat one of those, when the wreckerator got the pleading-puppy look down so perfectly?

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJules

The monkey face is fitting, as Cheetah the Chimpanzee just died a few days ago at the age of 80.

UUUGGGHHH!!!! D:

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Woobie's pic made me choke on my ice cream! Totally awesome!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChrisy in Chicago

The doggie cupcakes are cute, but the other cakes are horrifying! The black-and-white makes them even creepier, especially the Tweetie Bird cake. That one looked like an alien from some old B movie.

Are you guys ok? I noticed you hadn't posted for Tue, Dec 27th. Wondered if you had and it was taken down. Considering you guys find a way to post on holidays, vacations, out of the country (Canada), on the water (cruise), on painkillers, in sickness, and in health, I figured you must be going through something.

Do you need me to ship you some chicken soup?

On another note, the meerkats finally creeped me out.

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterteabunny

This is my favorite post you have ever had. Keep it up!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Today's post is definitely more in character with the pix in black & white - very TZ. Somehow it makes the cakes even creepier.

@Jules, I'm used to calling them rubber slippers or just slippers...they also sometimes get called zoris - it's a Japanese word for them.

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

ah...the Twilight Zone...one of the best TV shows ever....and yes, definitley in black and white...thanks for the memories (and the smiles....)....

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

love the pictures at the end. and your lack of sentence structure made me laugh when i saw the pic that went along with it :) THANKS!!!!!!!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

Excellent!

Now we just need those dolphin pics to be made into cakes!

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErica

Oh, the B&W photos most definitely work better than they would in color... more theme-appropriate; also keeps away any distractions from the true horror of these wrecks.
(PS: You have the best fans, coming up with dolphin illustrations so soon after you asked... My favorite has to be Woopsie's... It's got sort of an 'Eats Shoots & Leaves' thing going on.)

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter{gemmifer}

Ooops! I meant Woobie's rendition... Obviously I have trouble reading properly.

December 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter{gemmifer}

Am I going crazy, or is this a duplicate post?

[Editor's note- Yup. A wrecky replay. We're slacking. -john]

December 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTera

@Donkalooza & @Jules. I think it depends on the part of the country you grew up in. I've always known them as flip flops (because of the sound they make), but being an Air Force brat, and living in different parts of the country, have also hear zories and thongs. I think it's kind of like what you call soda depends on what part of the country you grew up in (soda, cola, coke, or pop).

December 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTara

I have read this post three times now just so I can laugh myself silly at the "squeedleDEEE" part. Thanks for making my day!

"So long, and thanks for all the fish."

December 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjanet2buns

"What up, playah?" made me snort. I'm wishing my birthday hadn't just happened, because I totally want hip hop zombie meerkats on my next birthday cake. Now I have to wait a whole damn year. *sigh*

December 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

Fact: I 100% thought the header said "Rod Stewart." It was equally awesome (though perhaps more confusing) with his voice.

December 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarly

Sara, are you sure you're not me?

SO LOOKING FORWARD TO SCIFI'S NEW YEAR'S TWILIGHT ZONE MARATHON! Even though I have the complete series on DVD! New Year's just isn't New Year's with The Twilight Zone marathon on SciFi. I'm looking forward to seeing Rod again, as he's the father of my children. Well... he is in my own personal Twilight Zone. ;)

But anyway, seriously AWESOME post. I can totally hear Rod Serling in my head, complete with the awesomesauce music.

December 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

Cake #3-Those are supposed to be...meerkats? They don't look like either of the meerkats I've ever seen (there's the real-life ones, and then there's Timon!) I must say, I'd prefer to look at Timon, thank you!
