What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Remind Me of the Babe

Warning:  This post is pretty disturbing.  Maybe skip it.  You have been warned.

"What babe?"

The babe with the power.

"What power?"

THE POWER TO GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES FOR THE REST OF YOUR NATURAL LIFE.

"Oh. THAT babe."

And before you ask...

Yes, it's cake.

Yes, it's a baby shower cake.

Yes, it's red velvet.

And yes, THIS is where the mom-to-be made the first slice:

Thanks to "army wife," who'd rather have that baby in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but I am SO not cooperating. STAY BACK, woman. I mean it!

UPDATE: The baker has spoken!! And as you'd expect, she has a wicked sense of humor and is pretty darn awesome. So let's all give a rousing wrecky welcome to Jana of Jana's Fun Cakes! Check her site for a creepy dummy/marionette cake, too.

Oh, and to answer your questions regarding that cup in the last photo, Jana says:

"the goop in the cup is corn syrup and food coloring, meant for added slime."

Good to know.

OMG. that is all.

My first reaction: "WOW! What a realisitc cake!"

My second: "Oh yeah...it's cake...that means they have to...eat it..."

My third, after seeing where the first cut was made: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHhhhhhh..." as I ran away screaming.

Gut-wrenching wreck. Just, wow.

I love this cake! It captures what a newborn really looks like, but the blue is a tad on the is the baby ok side.... totally a gorgeous cake otherwise...

January 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSpring

This is just sick.....and I find no humor in it at all. So many levels of wrong.

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim

I like it. If I had a womb and this was at a party thrown for me, I'd be astounded and thankful for the artists in the community and the creativity and execution of the baker. And, I don't mind the blue-hue on the child (it's actually correct) - but it could've looked like curdled milk from the few deliveries I've witnessed. I thought the baker's recreation of a newborn was accurate and inspiring.

"Immediately after birth, a newborn's skin is often grayish to dusky blue in color. As soon as the newborn begins to breathe, usually within a minute or two, the skin's color reaches its normal tone. Newborns are wet, covered in streaks of blood, and coated with a white substance known as vernix caseosa, which is hypothesised to act as an antibacterial barrier." (wikipedia)

Not only is this cake really, REALLY creepy but I LOVE the reference to MAO!

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

Some one sure has a sick sense of humor. It is really repulsive.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJan

Holy innapropriateness Batman, why is this baby so blue?? its creepy & wrong on MANY levels. How to scare a new mum in one easy step.....

January 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRunningScared

This was quite disturbing and brought back some very unpleasant memories :(

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlilly52184

Reminds me of the disection unit in 10th grade bio class.

February 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobin Mc

For me, the most horrifying part is the fact that the baking sheet and scissors look pretty much like standard issue dissection tools. If only they'd put it on a little fondant blanket or SOMETHING. I'm off to go and find something else to be the last thing I see before I go to bed.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTashablueyes

My five year old just saw this and asked me if it was a real baby, and if they cooked it.

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkelli

Just now getting around to seeing this site. I am sorry, but this is just to gross to eat. I mean it is a work of art, but who would want to eat a little baby? So now are we eating our youg. I think that is what I would feel like if I ate this cake.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerrie

I watched her YouTube video demonstration of making this cake. It was awesome up until she began dusting it with the blue sugar dust. Suddenly, this baby's apgar score bottomed out fast. It was a case of she should've quit while she was ahead. Pink baby good. Blue baby not so good.

March 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermarie

That is the most disgusting and vile thing I've ever seen. I wouldnt cut into that let alone put it in my mouth. There is nothing humorous about this, its just plain ugly.

March 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHorrid

GAG, all of the above. My very first thought was it was copied from a photo of a stillborn in the morgue.

Gotta go, need to puke.

The cookie sheet gives it more of a clinical/autopsy look that I don't think they were going for. Putting on a pedestal cake plate or adding something that looks like a blanket would help with the immediate ick-it's-dead factor. Or maybe put it on a scale (like I think they do when they're weighing the baby after delivery).

So close to being crowned the Wicked Humor Queen... but missed the opportunity to welcome Elsa not on a pink ribbon, but a (stop hear, O Faint of Heart) placenta.

Forgive me. But he who lops baby cake head-first with a side of blood slime is held to a higher standard of fearlessness.

March 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWise cracker

I totally agree w/everyone - that's pretty hard to take. But, I have to give the decorator credit for an absolutely amazing job! To get it so realistic and proportional, down to the toes, it's and excellent job. But why not turn that artistry into other, less depressing avenues!

April 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarenT

Seriously, people. What is wrong with just basic sprinkles and loopy frosting on a cake? Who does this for a baby shower anyways? So disturbing. So wrong.

April 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

What an incredibly scary and morbid looking cake! I can't get over the fact that whoever ordered that cake was stupid enough to actually present it at the shower!!

April 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMommyof2girls

@Marie from March 8th...I made this cake and I have never made a youtube video for it, so whatever you watched was not me making this cake. After reading all (ALL) of these comments, I would be afraid to put up a youtube video...would probably get death threats!

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJana's Fun Cakes

That is beyond horrid. I can't believe any would pay for such a disgusting cake, much less want to eat some of it. *shudder* And seriously, if "Jana's Fun Cakes" actually made this, you really need to reconsider your day job, Jana. That thing is nothing to be proud of.

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJaime

If this baby were a healthy pink and on a blanket, then OK, weird and creepy but OK. A blue baby on a cold metal slab, come on, this poor thing looks dead. NOT what any expectant mother would want to see. Like someone else here posted, it is the worst nightmare to have a still born. I have a pretty sick sense of humor, but I cannot find humor in this one.

June 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJust Me

Oh, dear. This was in the "More! More! More!" section underneath today's post. I think I skipped it the first time around. It *is* disturbing. I can only imagine what someone who had experienced a stillbirth would feel. I honestly thought it was a cake to honor a baby that had passed away, until I saw the little "Welcome Elsa" banner.

I agree with other posters who have suggested a blanket, rather than a metal sheet pan. That poor baby's cold!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

Well at least she was prepared that her baby wasnt going to come out all pretty and clean. Babies come out and they are gross, ugly, and gray. Then once the nurse cleans them up then they are adorable and cute... When my first son was born my first thought was omg I gave birth to an alien

June 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterleigha

This is the most disturbing thing I have seen in a long time. SO SO SO SO WRONG. I dont care what kind of humour you have, there are just some things that you just don't do - even if you CAN.

June 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteryshekster

I'm sorry, but this is AWESOME. And I don't think it looks dead - I think it looks like a newborn baby. Have you seen what one actually looks like? They're a weird grey color and covered in blood. It's not cute. This is obviously what the mother asked for and she obviously has a great sense of humor, if you can tell anything from her first incision. Kudos to the baker and the mother-to-be! Hilar.

June 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkate

That cake is in very extremely poor taste. Pun INTENDED!

June 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTL

Can you just hear the crickets when they took this out of the box? Oh my heck. This soooo makes the "Hello Stranger" baby shower cake my mom ordered for my cousins baby shower look normal.

June 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMindy M.

this is so aweful......who would ever think this is a good idea....I can't imagine what the shower guests thought!

June 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkrystal

this is absolutely horrifying. Who thought this was 'cute' 'or 'funny' or 'clever"--it's beyond me. And why opt to make the baby blue, one must wonder...

June 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrobert norman

I can tell you why the baby is blue...... She is on a COLD METAL PAN!! Somebody get the warm blankets and oxygen, this baby is going to the NICU!

June 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

This was Chris Morris' birthday cake, wasn't it?

June 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAUGH

What's with the blue tinge?? That's awful.

July 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterG Benz

This cake was designed FOR SHOCK VALUE ..bravo, bravo!

July 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobyn

They didn't even clamp the cord before they cut it. That's probably why the baby is blue-they KILLED it!

July 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKbruce

The power of voodoo.
Who do?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of the babe.

July 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAub

I hate the fact that the baby is blue. IT"S BLUE!!!! That's just wrong...

July 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIvy

I didn't take the time to read 8 pages of comments, so I don't know if this has been mentioned. I think the mom is probably a nurse and this was a shower at work. Perhaps a co-worker is a part-time sugar arts pro... Just sayin'

August 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterD. Little

oh wow that's pretty cool for all its deathlike look it does remind me of how my first son looked till they got him breathing at least. i would get something like this but maybe a little pinker so it at least looks alive. good work to the baker that can't have been easy to make.

August 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAya

When my brother was born we just made a cake with cute farm animals on it... well actually we bought one b/c dad was at work, i was only 6, and mum was very tired...

November 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterxxAmyLeeFanxx

Elsa IS the ice queen, so of course she's blue!

April 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

The funniest part is that the baby looks dead.

July 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKatherine Klang

Reminds me of the dead baby jokes from the 80's...

January 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterselkie

Why is it... um... blue?

January 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLiv

Many a newborn looks exactly like that, folks. You rub 'em down and apply a little oxygen and they pink right up.

January 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

While disturbing, the craft work is amazing.
