What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Remind Me of the Babe

Warning:  This post is pretty disturbing.  Maybe skip it.  You have been warned.

"What babe?"

The babe with the power.

"What power?"

THE POWER TO GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES FOR THE REST OF YOUR NATURAL LIFE.

"Oh. THAT babe."

And before you ask...

Yes, it's cake.

Yes, it's a baby shower cake.

Yes, it's red velvet.

And yes, THIS is where the mom-to-be made the first slice:

Thanks to "army wife," who'd rather have that baby in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but I am SO not cooperating. STAY BACK, woman. I mean it!

UPDATE: The baker has spoken!! And as you'd expect, she has a wicked sense of humor and is pretty darn awesome. So let's all give a rousing wrecky welcome to Jana of Jana's Fun Cakes! Check her site for a creepy dummy/marionette cake, too.

Oh, and to answer your questions regarding that cup in the last photo, Jana says:

"the goop in the cup is corn syrup and food coloring, meant for added slime."

Good to know.

This CAKE is awesome! The detail on this CAKE is really well thought out and the fact that the customer ordered this CAKE and got the CAKE she asked for is even better! How many people order a CAKE and get nothing but a hot mess? Oh and btw, it's CAKe people! If this is the most disturbing thing you've ever seen and will give you nightmares, you've lived a very sheltered and charmed life. Also, maybe all those complaining about the deadness would prefer your fetus CAKE to look at you and smile?
Great CAKE Jana's CAKES!

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Great cake Jana's cakes! And to make the customer happy is something most decorators will never do. To all those who don't get it, well hey it's your cake and clearly you are WAY too serious! Toddle off to Walmart why don't you and buy CCC cause that's all your capable of understanding.

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

I just checked out the baker's site, well at least she doesn't have a decapitated Jesus head cake....oh...wait.....LOL!!!! I'm sure someone will be offended, but I'm just glad the baker has a sense of humor!

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbonnie

Why is it blue? That makes it so much worse.

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Very well done! Pass me the right hand, please.
And congratulations to the new mom!

@Beki:
Thank you, your post was very kind. You're right, seeing post after post saying "get over it" and accusing every person who doesn't see this as funny of having no sense of humor does end up getting under one's skin.

I appreciate your kind words, very much.

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMara

Good grief, people. SOMEONE ordered this cake. It wasn't just created by some random cake-maker and dropped off at the nearest baby shower she could find. Anyone with half a brain (not made of red velvet cake) would KNOW you can't spring a cake like this on someone. The person the shower was for either likely KNEW about the cake (if she didn't order it herself) OR was a person that would NOT freak out about something like this. Creepy? Yes. Disturbing? Sure. But ITS A CAKE. Its not a baby. No matter how much it LOOKS like a baby, its just a cake. Chill.

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElphieh

WHY. WHY IS THIS BLUE.

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterM

Holy crow that's creepy...and the way they sliced the top off the head just gave me the absolute willies, as it made me think of some sort of messed up brain surgery. Yikes!! The cyanosis doesn't help, either... Baby cakes should be all about cute and funny and happy; have these people heard of a round or square cake pan with little flowers or something? Maybe a stroller or a teddy bear? Too many creepy baby cakes out there...

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermedrecgal

Horrors! This has creeped me out more than anything ever on Cake-Wrecks. It's like serving stillborn fetus cake. Barf!!!

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDenice

That is just wrong on so many levels! If you look at the back end of that poor blue baby...is that actually an anus? Is there brownish yellow icing!? How do I erase this from my memory...

November 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

I honestly thought, okay, it's on a tray, there are scissors- does someone in the med school have a really black sense of humour and is celebrating the completion of an autopsy class? The cut at the end just played into the theory. Maybe even the most horrifying cakes just need the right occasion. (*considers other cakes seen previously here* Maybe not.)

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEl

"You're right, seeing post after post saying "get over it" and accusing every person who doesn't see this as funny of having no sense of humor does end up getting under one's skin."

Mara, Beki's point seemed to be that people weren't saying that...

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCorki

I thought this was for some freaky Halloween party but when I saw it was for a baby shower I was repulsed. It looks like it's a fetal dissection. Mmmmm baby brains!

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterANOM

This cake is successful at being well-executed, creepy as sin, scary, inappropriate and gross. The same ways Hitler was successful.

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

AAAAAAAHHHHHHH! Oh, gosh, the tongs even have blood on them! WHY SO DETAILED WHYYYYY!
I'll never eat again.

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTifa

Don't think of the blue as meaning dead, think of it as being part Smurf and it becomes fun again!

Re: the source for the title, my first thought was not Labyrinth (although I have seen it) but another much older Cary Grant movie, The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer:

Hey, you remind me of a man.
What man?
The man with the power.
What power?
The power of hoodoo.
Hoodoo?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of a man...

I'm going to have nightmares about this. First it was just horrific, but after seeing the name I really want to puke since I also have a baby Elsa.

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

It's all well and good that the mother wanted it and the group of artists pushes each other to do more outrageous things.

It's like something my artist musician listens to Charles Manson's "music" ex would do if one of his buddies were to reproduce. And everyone would force themselves to love it because it's only cake and it shows talent etc etc.

But it's 100% obvious, by the fact that it was sent to CW, that there was *someone* at that shower who was not ecstatic about this "art".

November 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMolly

Well, look on the bright side...
At least the eyes aren't open.
O.o

November 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGretchen Ort

This cake is in truly bad taste. It's not cute or amusing. It's disgusting and exceptionally insensitive. How do you know someone who is attending the shower hasn't lost a little one? And the baker...wicked sense of humor? This is funny??? REALLY?? Ever held a cold, blue newborn? Guess not. Awesome? Ya think? I don't care how nice a person the baker is, this is disgusting. Don't we have enough evil in the world without a cake like this that slices into the skull and little cups of gack that are so very very charming ......OR NOT....and then gushing about how wickedly hilarious it is. Maybe being a NICU nurse makes me a bit sensitive.....but I find this highly offensive. What next? A cake where we can hack into a clubbed seal pup? Now wouldn't THAT be hysterical!!!

November 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNICU Nurse

The metal tray *does* look like a dissection (morgue?) tray. O.o

I am expecting and if I have a baby shower I am making my own cake... with no edible babies involved. Ever.

November 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterarmy_wife

Ok, I realize I'm several days late, but I'm still going to comment. When I saw a Labyrinth reference, I thought "Oh, this has to be good." Well, I'd have to admit the cake is artistic, if artistic means realistic, but not sure I'd go as so far as to say "good."

I hope any future Labyrinth references are reserved for Sunday Sweets!

November 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarahRod

I'm trying to decide which is worse...this cake or the meatloaf baby with the pear onion eyes. WHY did the baker choose to airbrush blue highlights? The baby looks dead. If a cake like that showed up at my baby shower in February I'd run out of the room and refuse to come back until it was out of the house.

November 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergrnbutterfly

This has to be the most inappropriate, horrifying, and tasteless thing I've ever seen, particular if given to expecting mothers who have previously suffered miscarriages or stillbirths. I hope the baker is ashamed.

November 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVicky

Wasn't going to speak up on this one, but as a NICU RN, I have to say that EVERY SINGLE blue newborn on a silver tray that I've seen has been deceased. The cyanosis was central (around the mouth, along the chest, etc.) not peripheral as a healthy newborn would have, and the very low tone was equally disturbing.

FTR, I can see the situation where that cake would be funny, but a baby shower is not it. I also understand what the cake decorator was going for, and Jana, next time put the baby on one of those ugly hospital blankets; I'm sure you can get the scratchy texture perfect, and please, don't put blue anywhere but the hands and feet. Also, a little white frosting under the pits and in the creases would improve the "newborn" look without adding to the "dead" look.

Blue baby on a metal tray just does not equal living baby in the real world. At least not in MY real world, which unfortunately has too many of the other kind.

November 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNICU RN

Too &$&%*ing realistic. I know some wrecks where it doesn't look right in this case the thing looks TOO right. I mean I don't want to cut into it because it looks TOO REAL. Not to mention READY FOR THE MORGUE. *breathes* sorry when you said "give you nightmares for the rest of your natural life" you weren't kidding.

November 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathan R.

Ack, Oop, Ack, Eeeeeeeeeeeew!

Well, if it's stillborn, then maybe the trephination isn't compounding the awfulness of this misbegotten and ill-starred cake so very much.

Maybe it just comes down to the classic Easter question: Do you start eating the chocolate bunny at the ears or the feet?

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Well....at least we were spared the placenta.

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDahls

So, just as a thought, the cake isn't a problem unless we are going to tell people what they can/can't do artistically or with food in the privacy of their own houses/parties. No one is making anyone who finds it horrible have a cake that looks like a fetus (as per the baker's description of the job). If people are disturbed about *seeing* it, then the issue is with having it posted on a public website, not for the existence of the cake itself.

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterL

It's a personal Web site, not a public one.

People are free to look at it or not. If they're disturbed by the cake, they are free to never look at it again.

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzzzzz78759

OMG!! This is creepy! If I seen this when I was pregnant I would of freaked out.
& then they cut his head?? Ahhh!!

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Like most, at first I'm just amazed at the quality.

Then I can't click out of here fast enough. God, the only thing worse would have been if she had made its eyes open.

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermeh

I GET THE CORD!!! Can I have some added slime, too?

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I have to say, being fairly newly pregnant, this made me vomit. Please, please, please bakers...stop making these cakes. Why on earth would anyone want to hack into a life-like baby and EAT it? Excuse me, I have to go throw up again.

November 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Having 3 babies of my own and attending 2 other births I'd say this is the IMMEDIATE aftermath - even healthy babies totally come out blue and slimy! It's after the nurses scrub them off with a towel that they pink up a bit. The cake-baker has serious talent, but maybe could have picked the moment 2 minutes later? To go straight for the head I'm guessing the mom-to-be also had a wicked sense of humor :) No harm no foul at THAT baby shower!

November 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKirsta

Everyone who keeps talking about the baby looking dead disgusts me. Who would want to eat a LIVE baby. That's just cruel.

November 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTim

VERY VERY disturbing... is this some kind of sick joke, or did someone really want the cake to look like that? It's just... um... sick, demented, twisted, gross, scary, I could go on, but I think everyone's already in agreement.

November 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAK

I know the couple that had this cake at their shower. They had an eight foot handmade (by the artist groom) Yeti at their wedding. They LOVED the cake and if you knew them you would appreciate it, too! They are also super cool with wicked senses of humor.

November 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJayme

Did the husbands X-girlfriend make this pregnant lady's cake?????

November 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSummertime Rose

Usually I find most of these cakes funny, but this one is just wrong on so many levels, not to mention horrific. Why on earth would anyone think this was a good idea for a cake? If you wanted to make a "life like" baby, than don't make the skin tone blue and don't make the whole cake like that, make it out of fondant, since no one eats that stuff. Makes me very glad I never had a baby shower...

December 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKeri

I know this is going to get me booed and hissed at, but is it just me or would this be perfect cake for the opening of an abortion clinic?

December 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRB

Seriously? Why do people see these cakes as awesome? I find them a bit disturbing, especially since this one is BLUE. It reminds me of this creepy movie my mom was watching once. The baby died and then was like crawling up the wall and ceiling and then turns it's head around completely to look at the person in the chair. Freaky..

December 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrina

It takes all kinds of people to make the world go around. Do you have to have a dark sense of humor to like this cake? I'd say yes (by the way I do think it is awesome). Many people don't like cutesy things and pastels, and I think it is wonderful that people can branch out, think outside the box, and come up with outstanding ideas. (Though I'll admit I wouldn't want the butt piece because it does look like it's anatomically correct and has poo there). To each their own and I say good job on the cake.

December 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRB

This is a beautiful cake! I will admit, it's odd that the baby is on a tray. Wouldn't a fuzzy blanket be cozier? And yes it is odd that the baby is blue already after the umbilical cord has been cut. However, for everyone freaking out over the plain blue aspect, I suspect all of you have never seen, or held your child, immediately after they are born. I had a natural child birth and as soon as I gave birth to my baby she was immediately placed in my arms and YES she WAS blue! And YES, she was super HEALTHY! Babies don't get oxygen while they are in the wombs so until they have taken several breaths and oxygenated blood has been able to fully circulate their entire little body they will be blue! Slimy too from all the delivery fluids which actually helps moisturize their skin and provides antibodies to protect them from germs! The baker of this cake deserves extremely high accolades and applause for their extreme artistry. I admit I wouldn't like to eat a cake like this, but it is VERY beautiful!

December 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

the mortuary tray doesn't help matters either!

December 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersockfeetrs

Just plain GROSS !!!!! A slimy blue baby with its umbilical cord and a pair of scissors lying on metal pan sure looks stillborn, And how could an expectant mother cut off the top of its head...and did people actually eat it?!!!!!
