Sunday Sweets: Fall Treats
October 9, 2011 You guys, the weather here in Florida is now a crisp, clean, [checking temperature] uh...84 degrees.
Yippee! Time to break out the sweaters!
Yep, we Floridians may be a thin-blooded lot, and our trees might stay green year-round, but that doesn't mean we don't love us some Autumn colors!
And pumpkins! Who doesn't love pumpkins?

How gorgeous is this? The Fairy Godmother herself couldn't ask for a finer specimen. Love the squiggle wires, too. (That's the correct technical term, right? "Squiggle wires?")
It goes against the grain to say it, but this next Sweet leaves me no choice: I think you'll find it's all bark and no bite.

Just look at those details - right down to the "staples" holding the barrel together! And the piping! And the flowers! Totally swoon-worthy.
Oh, and I never pay much attention to the flavor details on Sweets, but this one was pumpkin cake with a caramel apple filling and cream cheese frosting. I don't even like cream cheese frosting, guys, and I'm totally drooling over here. Mmmm.

Once again, these all look great. However, based on this blog, I just wonder how many people would take these pictures to go ask for a cake of their own, and I think about what they actually end up with.

Oh, The WOODGRAIN! That baker knows the way around a perfectly-planed plank of knotty pine. I'd love to know the backstory---is bride or groom a woodworker? Do they own a lumberyard? Are they building a home together? Just lovely
Fall is my favorite season -- brilliant colors, flannel-shirt days and sweatshirt nights, picking apples, the smell of buring leaves (when I was a kid you could still do that), and pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins. These Sunday Sweets have it all and are absolutley fantastically gorgeous! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Love the cakes today - make me want to put on a sweater - except its 80...just saw when you are touring here and must ask you to change the date for me - it is interfering with my seeing my daughter off to her homecoming dance. You don't mind, do you? Thanks in advance.
I am a baker and cake decorator so it's always fun to see the Sunday Sweets and try and figure out what techniques the decorators used for these. I have made fondant pumpkins before and they're super easy and super cute. I've taken a few basic classes but haven't been to pastry school or anything like that so a lot of these techniques are advanced for me. I have to self-teach the advanced stuff.
It's nice to know that I can nominate my own cakes for "Sunday Sweets", but I'm almost afraid to do so. What if you disagree and think my "Sweet" is really a "Wreck"? ;-) It's my worst nightmare to see one of my cakes publicly labelled a "Wreck"! Certainly wouldn't be good for business (or my pride!). LOL

Okay, I'll forgive you. This time.
Those cakes are gorgeous and they make me want to curl up with some pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and a big steaming mug of hot cocoa. And cake. Lots of cake.

[Editor's note- Hi just me. Since the beginning of the blog, we have taken Sundays as a time to sit back and look at some truly beautiful cakes. We call it Sunday Sweets. The rest of the week is reserved for wrecks. For four weeks now, I have gotten comments saying something like, "What is this? I thought you were supposed to show wrecks? These aren't bad at all! This is stupid!" And so today, I assumed the same person was asking the same question to be difficult or, in internet terms, a troll. Admittedly, I was a bit abrupt and I am very sorry. Someone in my house said it's too early for cake ?!?! (pout) These are glorious - and a welcome reminder of the season on a gloomy, rainy day.
PS I don't know the correct term for 'squiggle wires' but I can tell you that the ones you buy/see in floral arrangements are actually a weed!! They curl like that when they dry to release their seeds - strange, hmm??
John - that's nice to know. I'm no Duff Goldman or Cake Boss, but I work hard on my cakes and I do my best. :-)

Absolutely jaw-dropping jealousy-spawning down right awesomely beautiful cakes! ( said as my throat and tongue burn from spicy hot hot chocolate which was purchased in WDW!)
I fell in love with the clean lines and the great color combo on the 4th...and then I got to the nuzzling birds and became a total puddle of "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" I want the cake with those birds. Gorgeous work and SO GOSH-DARNED CUTE! %)
Maybe it's just because I'm in the seasonal mood (now that the temps here are also finally falling out of the 90s--pun intended), but these cakes are extra super Sweet! I can't pick a favorite...but I ADORE that line shading. Such a great look on cakes.

I got married in the fall specifically for the colors. I love all of these cakes so much, I think I need to encourage my husband to get me an anniversary cake:-)

Gorgeous cakes this week! Now I'm starting to put 'Fall" near the top of my favorite seasons list (tied for second w/Spring- 1st, Summer, and 3rd- Winter; I like the little chill).
I'm probably the only one that who feels this way but I can't totally love the first cake. I love all the parts just not together. If there was no pumpkin in the middle or no additional layers on the pumpkin I would like it better. But the rest of them are all gorgeous and here in Michigan it's been 80 degrees, but chilly at night so we have pumpkins and colorful trees with beautful weather.
Love, love, love them all but the "love birds" may just have edged out the others in my heart.

There would also be approximately 150 posts by now, informing various and sundry that the correct term for 'squiggly wires' is ______. (I left it blank not for suspense but because I have no idea what it is and like it that way -- a little mystery in life is a good thing.)

Wonderful cakes!! I especially like the 10 year cake. My husband and I were married in Oct, celebrating 12 yrs next Sunday. That would be an awesome anniversary cake. The cake with the apples.....pumpkin spice with caramel apple filling & cream cheese frosting?!?! Holy guacamole! That sounds like heaven. :o)
They are all gorgeous but I love the little tree house. I live in a neighborhood called Enchanted Oaks and this is what I always picture all the houses in the neighborhood should look like.
The nuzzling birds cake is my favorite... very Charley Harper-esque.
Maybe I didn't like Dr. Suess as a kid or something, but I just can't get into the topsy-turvy cake thing. Oh well.

Ok I just want all those adorable little pumpkins to come to my house. I love them! I want to squee at such cuteness but I probably would earn an odd look from my hubby..ah well does it anyways lol.
I've been meaning to ask this for quite some time, especially seeing these gorgeous cakes with all the odd angles (the bushel of apples was to die for) topsy turvy, wide or oblong middle layer, tree houses, spheres, ovals, all these creative shapes. Just how, could we get a demonstration maybe, do you CUT these cakes to make nice even portions so that everybody gets a sort of even amount of "bread" (as my daughter calls it) with icing? Having been stuck, oops, I mean honored with cutting the sort of normal, old fashioned wedding cakes for my cousins, BFFs, complete strangers, etc., and that being tricky enough, I just can't wrap my head around trying to cut some of these wonderful 'look but don't touch' creations.
Just too pretty to eat.

I live in Australia, and even if it weren't Spring over here, we don't really get the same kind of "Autumn" experience as in America... and I still think these are beautiful and whimsical. The last cake, though, is definitely my favourite. And that's an idea for a future Sunday Sweets feature...! They'd have to be pretty, too, of course, but it could be interesting to focus on a selection of cakes with unusual but genius flavours. Since the combination of this one here has me drooling, too.

Oddly enough, it was in the 80s up here in Minnesota last week. It felt kinda odd for it to be that warm with the leaves changing.

I second Annie in Texas' question. How would you possibly cut that last cake to serve? Maybe the apples were removable as separate servings and the barrel sliced up more like a regular cake all on its own? Huh...
These are so beautiful! I am not usually a "tipsy" cake fan (even when they are done well, I'm kind of "meh"), but that last cake is soooo awesome!

But it looks like there's an alien sitting on the edge of the barrel, to the right of the silver pretzel-shaped thingie, in the last one. A stick figured alien with a big head and big eyes. Casually leaning back against the apples and reading . . . a book? a Kindle? and iPad?
I can't think of what else that object could be.
