What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The CW Book Tour, Part Three

Guess what?!?

Ok, well, I guess the post title might have given it a way a little. And that Twitter post I made a few weeks ago. But still.

Ta-da!!

Yep, in order to lure John and me out of the house again, my dear publisher Andrews McMeel has shamelessly bribed me with a trip to Disneyland. Shamelessly, I say. And since we all know I'm powerless against those kinds of tactics, here's the schedule:

Monday, June 21: Tempe, AZ
7:00 pm
Changing Hands Bookstore

Wednesday, June 23, Salt Lake City, UT
7:00 pm
The King's English Bookshop

Saturday, June 26, -- Pasadena, CA (That's almost LA, right?)
4:00 pm
Vroman's

Sunday, June 27 - La Jolla, CA (Google says it's San Diego)
2:00 pm
Warwick's

Monday, June 28th - I get to go to DISNEYLAND!!

Now, for those of you who weren't around during our first two tours, here's the drill: each event will start with a hee-larious slide show presentation by yours truly and John, then we'll have a Q&A, and then - the best part for us - there will be a cupcake contest. That right: you make a cupcake version of your favorite Wreck, bring it in, we'll judge it, and if it's one of our favorites you'll win fabulous prizes, fame, and the adulation of Wreckies everywhere.

We'll also have free cake for all, provided by a local baker/Wreckerator. (And if you're a pro baker in one of those cities who'd like to volunteer your services, let me know! It's great advertisement, and heaps of fun. Honest.)

Oh, and I guess I'll sign some books. You know, if you have some.

So mark your calendars, and please RSVP via the Evite links above if you think you'll be able to attend; we want to be sure we have enough cake!

Having done about 15 of these so far, I can tell you that these events are like no book signing you've ever been to. They're more like giant parties with all of the best friends you've never met. So please, come out and laugh with us and eat cake and say hello! John and I are looking forward to meeting you!

But! None of those are even REMOTELY near me! Couldn't you come to Ohio? Pleaaaase? or at least the eastern half of America?

I'm so glad you're going to Disneyland, because Disneyland is WAY better than Disneyworld. I love Disneyland so dang much. I want to live there. It is seriously the happiest place on earth.

I am so excited you are coming to AZ!!! As long as I have the day off I am so coming. I've spent the last month reading the past blogs I missed!

La Jolla is a rich suburb of San Diego.

I loved La Jolla when I lived near San Diego. The La Jolla Shores beach is beautiful at night. Have lots of fun!

YAY!! An AZ stop!! I would LOVELOVELOVE to do the official cake for the signing, even tho I think someone else may have already beat me to the punch on that *LOL*

*plotting my cupcake entry*

Whee! Three desperate cries for you to come to Cincinnati!

You know you want to!

For half the price of a Disney Land ticket you can get into Kings Island, home of the Beast! You can dance on a Hofbrauhaus table in Newport! Explore a real American castle in Loveland! Eat some spaghetti with chili on it and then follow it up with some excellent Graeter's ice cream! And if you want to stick with cake wreckie experiences, I am sure you can find one or more at Jungle Jim's*, the largest international grocery store complete with animatronics!

So please come visit us!

*their bakery is actually quite good...but I am not above slightly slandering others to get still other people's attention.

COME TO TORONTO

May 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermoo

Oh man, I don't know if anyone else mentioned it because I didn't read all the comments but I just wanted to say this- Take a little bit of time to walk along the shore at La Jolla, it's just mind-numbingly beautiful there. I mean California's beautiful in general, but La Jolla is just like a little piece of overpriced Heaven in the middle of Cali.

May 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVelasa

I'm in Tucson, about 2 hours away. What do you think of an autistic 5 year old in the cupcake decorating contest? LOL. He will wreck some cake in classic style.

Yay! So glad you're coming to AZ!!

May 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBellaLovesPink

Darn you, Jen! You'll be in Disneyland while I'm in Walt Disney World! And I'll be in Disneyland in July!

I'm so happy you're coming to Salt Lake! I'm so there!

May 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

... Come to Canada! Seriously. I am doomed never to make the world tour. You are headed to Cali the week AFTER I get back from there! :(

May 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Hopefully there will be no trips to the ER this time!

May 31, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSandi

Oh NO! I live South of Salt Lake, but I can't come on the 23rd.. And my birthday is the 26th.. So unfair!

May 31, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I'm totally happy. You're coming to Tempe just before my birthday to the coolest bookstore in the state. May I make a suggestion? Eat lunch/dinner at House of Tricks. It's a short walk from Changing Hands and is a fabulous little mid-range eatery. The best cake decorating store in the area is ABC Cake Decorating but they're a 20 minute trip to downtown Phoenix.

Quick question: is your EPCOT / Spaceship Earth cake fair game for the cupcake contest? Or is it considered hallowed ground since
a) it's not a wreck
b) YOU made it, and
c) it has become the springboard for a whole slew of inside jokes
Whaddya think?

Anyways, welcome to Arizona in advance. The people are friendly, the bookstore you chose is way cool (if not small for this type of event), and you will most likely have a fabulous time.

:)
Wreck on!

Cakewrecks + Changing Hands = Total awesomeness!!! I can't wait!!! This just made my day!

D: I'm going to miss your visit to Tempe by 2 days.

June 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRebekah

Aw, but there's no Epcot in Californy!

June 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Warwicks is just being snobby - La Jolla isn't its own city, its a community in San Diego.

See you then!

sneaky pro tip for Disneyland: if the line for Indiana Jones is really long, get single rider passes. once you get past the movie projection part, pocket the single rider pass so you can stay together (unless you don't mind being separated, then you can hand them to the next castmember you see). you will cut your wait time by at least half, if not more! probably more since it's summer and the line could be up to 2 hours long... but with the single rider pass your wait will only be about 10-20 minutes! however, if the line is relatively short (30 min or so), and if it's your first time going to disneyland, go through the line for the experience.

and if you're hankering to get soaked STAT, splash mountain also has a single rider line, but you will for sure be separated. last time my wait was 5 minutes for a line that was an hour and a half!

I think I might try to make it to your date in Pasadena (which is in Los Angeles county by the way), I'll be the one with the bandaged arm because that's the next day I donate platelets at the City of Hope in Duarte.
My roommate would also love it if there were a gluten free cake as another poster suggested.

P.S. I'll be at Disneyland on the 21st (my birthday)!

I hope I can make it, I've just been switched to the night shift at work :P

June 16, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersheadaisy

How about some East Coast love - Philadelphia perhaps?

June 17, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

So sad I can't go to the Pasadena event... I'm a face painter with 2 gigs that day. But I live 5 minutes from Disneyland! Wouldn't it be awesome if you could have an event there? One can only dream...
