Sunday Sweets: When Mario Marries

One of the best things about having such a high geek percentile among you readers is that I get to see some awesomely geeky wedding cakes. Just look at what a few of your fellow Wrecktators have sent in:

Then there's Ryan I.'s grooms cake, which his wife surprised him with on the big day:
And lastly, Amy H. surprised her hubby with this for their Las Vegas wedding:

So. Cool.

wow.... my husband would have probably exploded if i had gotten a cake like this for our wedding...and not exploded in a bad way. these cakes are amazing!!! the attention to detail is just incredible.
Those are SUPER! I love that the last cake is not "just" a mario cake, but rather is a mariokart cake, which explains why the castle looks different too... but I think my favourite is cake number #1
I just love the 3rd cake down. It's simple and cute plus I love the bright colors. All of these are awesome though and the attention to detail is amazing.
It makes my geeky heart swell with pride, man. *sniff* Swell, I tell you.
Omg I want a Mario wedding cake! The cakes are amazing and SUPER! Maybe I will get one for hubby's big birthday. So cute, thanks for sharing with us.
My kids thought these cakes were the BEST ever. They now want them for their birthdays.
So thanks,
I think.
These cakes are very well made.
I always look forward to Sunday Sweets. These cakes are really well made today. The first and last cake are my favorites.
Enough with the Mario cakes. There are lots of other games and geeky stuff out there. Mario cakes have been up here SO many times. Let's see some variety! Yes these are cool and full of talent, etc. But we need more.
The itty-bitty shyguys on the third cake down absolutely slayed me. So cute! (Especially the one on the ribbon(?))
*happysigh*
You've posted quite a few of these gamer cakes, and each time you do they somehow manage to get more and more fabulous. Seriously. As one (teeny tiny little) part of your 'high geek percentile', I for one don't think I'll ever be able to get enough of the awesomeness that is Gamer!Geek Sunday Sweets.
So. Awesome.
Can't even pick a favourite, that's how awesome.
These are so awesome!

I don't know, a video game kiddie's birthday cake is ok. A video game WEDDING cake says someone needs to get a life.
I love them!!! Super amazing geeky cakes! Lol
Anna Marie
Those are beautiful. Sigh.
100% pure win. That's all I have to say. :)
Wow, such wonderful work! The attention to detail is astounding.
These are amazing! I should have something like this made up for our wedding! Love it absolutely love them all!
very well done and so darn creative. love 'em all.
as for any naysayer comments: i'm not a gamer, personally, but i say to each his/her own. if that's what the bride and groom want, more power(up) to them!!
great sweets today!
Oh my god, I love those! Especially the last one. (Though the first is my second favorite!) They are done so well.
I want one of these, even though I'm not a huge gamer. Classic Nintendo has always been my favorite. (Though Luigi needs some serious love! Why is he never the one getting married?)
I don't understand cartoon character cakes for an event at which you pledge your troth to one another for all eternity.
If ever there is a day for celebrating the transcendent, rather than geekiness, this is it.
Those are all so fun! I love the second one... kinda of a whimsical, N64 Mario cake.
My son is totally into Mario so this is his FAVORITE cakewrecks post ever. I totally see him with a mario wedding cake someday. He is bent on collecting all the Mario games ever made. He plays them, reads about them and watches people on You Tube play them. Mario is the center of his universe.
P.S. He is only 10!
I just had a nerd-gasm.
Those were awesome and beautiful cakes.
Those are wonderful!
Mario has my heart! :)
Those are so cool!
lovely - makes me want to get married again (to the same gorgeous man!)
These cakes are nice, but I can only look at so many Mario cakes before I start to get overloaded.
@Diana
I dunno... wouldn't the fact that they're, y'know, getting married kinda imply that they already do have a life? ;)
OH wow, I LOVE that Vegas cake! I sure wish I had the talent to make cakes like this.
And to think I just had regular 'ol boring wedding cake!
One of my best friends wanted a geeky cake, picked it out with hubby, only to have her mother come and change the design. I was mad for her, I would have loved to see something like this, rather than the nondescript, white cake she got.
To everyone grumpy about fun wedding cakes: Cake is frivolous to begin with, it's a calorie-laden fun treat. Of all the places to show off your shared interests, your quirks as a couple, and have a little fun, it's probably the best. Choosing a fun cake in no way means that the meaning of the event is diminished. For heaven's sake, not everyone needs to pick cake design #127 from the catalogue, or have the cake which resembled the one from your wedding in 1976 (my friend's mother's perspective). Traditions mindlessly followed don't make the event, be it the color of the wedding gown, the way the reception is hosted, or (horrors to some) an unconventional theme to the event. The relationship between the couple, the friends and family gathered together to show their support, and their future together is ALL that matters. Everything else is, well, cake.
My 3 yr old son loves this website as much as I do. Thanks for providing us both with entertainment. He said today was his favorite.
Well said Mellie
I love these cakes, so much fun.
@Mellie -- Bravo! I couldn't have made that point even a quarter as well (or as eloquently!) as you did.
Cake is fun by its very nature. Embrace it!
Besides, if it holds significance to the celebrant, that's what matters. What difference does it make if it's Mario or Marie Antoinette?
I agree with Mellie. While I personally wouldn't have gone this route for my own wedding cake, I totally applaud/support people who celebrate the things that make them unique.
Your wedding day in itself is special, and the cake you choose to mark the day just add to the memories. To be able to flip through your album 10 years from now and say, "Remember ordering this cake? Wasn't that so much fun?" will make the memories even more poignant.
Well said Mellie!
...and for those overloaded on Mario cakes, Cake Wrecks does provide a way for you to send in alternatives...
(getting off soap box now)
Love these cakes!!
These are so great-- I'd have done something like this if I thought that DH would've agreed!
As for the detractor(s) today, I suspect they're always this much 'fun,' *ahem* even at parties. Except they don't get asked to very many parties. Please learn to lighten up, or we'll send you a mailbox full of 'Man on the Moon' cakes like the one from the other day. It's just a CAKE, for crying out loud, and people are celebrating a HAPPY DAY with it. Quit going out of your way to spoil it.
Thanks so much for posting these Jen -- I think these are adorable. And to certain other commenters: C'mon, this site is free entertainment. If you can't say something nice....
Well put, Mellie!
Mellie is right, I adore fun wedding cakes because they show the couple's interests. If the interests are nerdy, then they are a nerdy couple and like to show it. There is nothing wrong with that.
My older sister is planning a Star Wars themed wedding and she's planning on putting us in those handmaiden robes from the Phantom Menace-those pretty burnt orange ombre things.
Nerdy, yes. But she and her fiance LOVE Star Wars. It doesn't dimish their love or the seriousness of the occasion or the seriousness of their bond. If anything, it enhances it because they agreed to show off something so uniquely THEM. It's their marriage so they get to do what they want on their wedding day.
The Bowser on the last cake is incredible! So impressive.
I must know--is Tess F.'s Mario holding his hat behind his back? My husband and I were once talking about getting Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine toppers made for our cake since he got me hooked on Monkey Island while we were dating (I also enjoy occasionally calling him Plunder Bunny, but that's because it's hilarious) but decided not to b/c of a. finding someone to do it (I had someone in mind so that wouldn't have been that difficult) and b. Explaining what they meant to everyone. So instead, we got a lovely little cake with blue and peach flowers cascading down the side, and bride and groom rubber duckies on the top. Because I could.
All of the naysayers picking on these cakes for being "inappropriate" for a wedding have obviously never been keyed into the fact that yes, silly nerds get married and no, don't always want WHITE DRESS WHITE FLOWERS WHITE CHAPEL WHITE TIERED CAKE. To those folks I reccomend a trip over to Offbeat Bride, although your heads may explode from the blatantly, cheekily, non-traditional brides there.

wow, these are so amaing!!
these are so cute. I would do this. :D
My 8-year old son is playing Mario on the Wii right now. He says these are the only wedding cakes he would ever consider having "if he was ever crazy enough to get married."
I applaud anyone who orders a cake that I'd actually REMEMBER-- I can hardly think of what any of them looked like from weddings I've been to over the past 10 years. I can't believe people get so worked up about these things, trying so hard for perfection, because no one cares that much (or ought to, anyway)-- and they forget to leave room for a little bit of JOY in the day! 100 years from now, it won't matter anyway, but I bet these weddings were actually kind of FUN to attend. Can't say that for all of them, you know.
Yosihi!!!
:O In my opinion it's only topped by the Stargate cake! That is just so awesome!!!
