What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Transformers

I suppose I should have featured these last weekend to coincide with the movie release, huh? Well, better late than never...

Josh G. sent in this sweet Bumblebee that his girlfriend Lindsay sculpted. Check it out:

And here he is in car form by Cake It Or Leave It:

This amazing Optimus Prime cake is completely fondant free, and yet look at all the detail:

Words fail me - this is too awesome. It was made by artist Dan Zuber.

Here's a neat composition: the cake was for the groom's birthday, in addition to being his groom's cake:

Made by Cakerific.

Not every Sweet has to be a sculpted cake, either. This sheet cake by Carmen-Rose is beautifully done:

Maybe I should start featuring more 2D cakes, to show that it's more about the talent of the decorator than a 3D vs 2D issue. What do you guys think?

And finally, I'm loving the graphic simplicity of this birthday cake by Cakes by Francesca:

I love the dramatic colors, and she executed the slanted tiers just perfectly. It takes a lot of skill to get a cake that glass-smooth, too, and the corners that sharp. Kudos, Francesca!

Have a Sweet to share? Then send it to me a Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

That poor bride they made was awfully rotund. The cake is awesome though.
I have found the cakes with the most fondant taste awful, is it just my bad luck?

I like your idea of featuring more 2D cakes. While I love the artwork of 3D cakes, 2D cakes often get the shaft because of what we are used to seeing at the grocery store. Ugly cakes. So I say, here, here to 2D cake love. They are the only cakes I've received, and they taste just as good.

Yes, more 2D Sweets would be lovely. ^_^ Just be sure to keep all the really awesome sculpted cakes in there, too. ;)

yes - more sheet cakes. I never know how people cut those super sculpted (though beautiful) cakes.

I totally support the inclusion of more 2D cakes! I love them, and they can be incredibly impressive. Go for it!

That groom's cake is genius. Plus, the idea of getting married on your husband's birthday ... at least he'll remember the anniversary, right?

What do I think:

I think 2D cakes are great, too, but it's the 3D ones that really make you go WHOOOOAAA!

And I think that William probably did not notice that his Autobot face is colored Decepticon purple :)

"I'd like to see more 2D cakes on Sunday Sweets, please. The artistry and skill of some of the decorators out there is amazing and I especially am impressed by the fondant-free ones! Of course, I LOVE the wonderful 3D cakes, too, but it does seem like the 2D-ers get ignored a bit."

AMEN!

I do think you should post more "sweet" sheet cakes. Not everyone has the $ to shell out on a tiered cake, and it'd be nice to show that sheet cake can be awesome, too.

awesome cakes!! the only "wreck" is the Optimus groom's bday/groom cake... he did not have a gun! he had a HUGE sword/blade... I only know this because my hubby and son are obsessed with Transformers.
