What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

And Now, MORE Weird Wedding Cakes

Aw, you know you love it.

Monica G. thinks this cake from the Wilton website looks like it's covered with rocks. I, however, say it looks like a pottery project. Covered in rocks.

And here we have...

A fish tank.

In a wedding cake.

That is all.

(Thanks, Phyllis L.)

If that isn't fishy enough for you, though, there's always this option:

(Look closely.) I am amazed, Karin. Completely freaked out, but amazed.

(UPDATE: Nope, these aren't Koi fish. Or imitation crab meat. For a close-up and explanation, go here.)

Laura M. tells me this next one is a "new take on a croquembouche gone awry". Now, I have no idea what a "croquembouche" is, but from looking at the photo...

I'm going to guess it's French for "albino booby tower".

And lastly, let's take a "peep" at Courtney S.'s find:

Hm. Now why does this topper remind me of the final scene in Beetlejuice?

I have to disagree about the Wilton cake. I love truffles, so that cake is heaven to me. mmmmmmmmmm

The third cake is definitely Koi fish, which do come in those colors...in Chinese culture, fish are symbols of prosperity, so you'll often see fish around at weddings, to wish the couple a prosperous life together.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa K.

Haha, that albino booby tower looks like a cake covered in fish balls (http://lh3.ggpht.com/choongkeat/R1_yN5BQ34I/AAAAAAAAAgo/JNDgb5YmD5Q/s800/Dumpling+%26+Fish+Ball.jpg) - made from ground fish meat, glutinous rice flour and a little salt. They're a very common food in Taiwan, Japan and parts of China.

At least the rock cake looks tasty. The fish ball cake does not.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenna

BTW I doubt the dead-shark cake is supposed to be koi. Koi do not have to be red and white. They can be red, yellow, white, orange, or even dark blue/purple. I saw a very expensive, rare one once that was pale green. In most koi ponds in Asia, they try to strike an artistic balance of colors and stock with koi in varying colors...so if it were a koi cake (which could be really cool if done well) it'd reflect those colors.

Oh, and I like the Peep cake, but two rabbit peeps in a veil and bowtie would have been a much better topper. Is nobody allowed to have a sense of humor anymore?

Yum. Cake.

I need cake.

I want cake.

NO.

I NEED it.

Don't know if its just me but the fish tank looks like it has a seam. I am thinking its not a real tank but a paper printing wrapped around the middle of the cake.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well, I think "koi" is Japanese for both "love" and "fish", so it could be a really, REALLY obscure pun. I hope.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSara

The Koi fish cake looked like a bunch of used...feminine products at first glance!

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

The way that fish tank one is leaning just adds to the wreckiness. Otherwise it looks perfectly executed. I guess it's just a strange concept, but if that's what the bride wanted...

Just not tempting to the taste buds.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPink

With that third one, I can't decide if what I'm seeing is a monstrous tower of clubbed baby seals, or the bottom of the trash can after aunt flow's come to visit. Either way, it's horrifying.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLily

the croquembouche like cake looks like it is made out of cake balls to me. What's a cake ball? Mushed up cake and flavoring shaped into a ball and dipped into chocolate.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKarmen

I sort of like the fish tank idea. (blush)

And, spinning off an idea that Silly Philly mentioned, a croque-en-bouche cake made of MALLOMARS would be *awesome*!!!

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Ohmigosh, it's my worst nightmare! A TOWER of meatballs!!!

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStacie

LOVE the fish tank cake and peep cake!

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

Not only are they dead whales, but they look like their dead white sperm whales. it's got something to do with Moby Dick, surely.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBillyD

I'm confused.. several people pointed out the origin of the Dead shark cake and the link to back it up, yet people are still commenting that they want the back story. I thought at first that it was because the comments queue before they are posted. But nope, people just don't read the comments, or even skim them.

Thanks to foobella who found it first:

gross that fish cake is so nasty!

is the one with the fish tank leaning to the side from the weight of the tank? or maybe the picture was taken crooked

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteradrienne

Not KOI. Sharks.

(As quite a few have already posted.)

It's illustrating how shark fin soup, used in many Chinese weddings, comes at the cost of many sharks.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The red and white fish cake . . . I'm not sure I should even mention this, but I could have sworn on first glance that that cake had more to do with feminine hygiene than with fish.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNick

These cakes are NOT OKAY! -I'll admit that the first one at least looks pretty...even if it shouldn't be a wedding cake. As for cake number 3...NOOOOOO! Yuck! For real?! The "booby cake" is a hoot (prolly cause of your comment), and the peep cake is just inexcusable.

This is all.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDangGina

Yota Armai - infuriating isn't it? It's like they punch in the first thing they think of, so we end up with a hundred comments saying "Oh, they're totally koi!"

Jenn- it's a protest against food served at weddings, that's why it has a bride and groom topper. It's not for an actual wedding.

If you go to the flickr page that numerous people have linked you can see a high-res picture with all the details apparent. The sharks are white because they've exsanguinated.

Not koi, repeat, not koi.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBurtie

To Burtie and many others,

Yeah we know. We saw the Flickr page and I don't think it's Koi. But who knows? ;)

It does bring up a really interesting question though: Is it the responsibility of the commenter to read all the comments in a post before making their own? What if there are 200? What if what they want to say has been said before, but poorly? Is a comment board meant to be a conversation or a venue where people can speak their minds?

Anne-Marie (the Wrecksistant) and I (john the hubby of Jen) are the ones tasked with moderating comments on this site and, to be honest, we are thrilled when a post makes people want to speak out. It means people are participating and it makes Cake Wrecks fun.

That said, there is a case to be made that if you are going to say something with authority and certainty (anytime in life really) you should probably check your facts.

Wreck On!

john

I think the aluminum foil peeking through the albino breasts is especially classy.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Any cake that leads to the usage of the word "exsanguinated" is all right with me!

(Okay, wait. This one is totally not all right. But I still think more people should get to use "exsanguinated" in everyday life.)

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGladys

OMG I think I almost
peed my pants at the
"albino booby tower"
comment. I've never
laughed so hard in my
life! OK, maybe that's
not totally true but
still. TOO FUNNY!! :oD

Is it wrong that I actually like the Peeps cake? But in my own defense, I love EVERYTHING Peeps.

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternewsjunkie

Really enjoyable! Love the albino booby tower, my thoughts exactly!

June 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTipton

Pfew. I'm glad those were just sharks. At first I thought it was a used tampon wedding cake!

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSewing-Chick

After seeing the close-up on the shark cake, I thought 'WTF?'. Then I read the explanation. It's sad, but not many people are aware of the cruelty of the shark-finning industry.

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrain Picker

looks like a tower-o-tampons to me.

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

So, that albino booby cake was cake balls dipped in chocolate. My best guess (from the person who took the picture) is that the bride asked for a modern interpretation of a wedding cake....and that is what she got.

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Meaux

Quote from the maker via the Flickr of the shark cake:

'It wasn't used at an actual wedding. It was made for ACRES in protest of sharks being killed for their fins to make soup at Chinese weddings. More can be seen on youtube. Just search "ACRES wedding cake"'

So to people concerned that it was used at an actual wedding... it wasn't, so chill.

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCat

I wonder what the shark protest cake actually accomplished, besides alienating/utterly confusing all the guests?

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGreat White Snark

Hey! I think the Peep's couple would make an Cool shirt for CakeWrecks! I would buy it.

Thanks for the updated link on the shark cake. I thought it was a tower of used tampons at first.

June 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

No one seems to be reading the comments before commenting themselves. That makes me go like this:

:-(

Really cool! The maker has an awesome golden ox-cake, too, for the new year!

For one, I must stop looking at this blog when eating.

For two, I'm almost embarrassed to be the one posting the link to this video. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw the Peep Cake.

k since most people cant click the link to read the story about the bloody shark cake... lol anyways. did you see the booby galore cup cake cake (i know how much you LOVE those) on the same page as the shark cake story? a HOOT! I especially adore the leaning tower of Pesca.

I'll bet that couple fiber-optic-lit rotating colour fountains at home.

" Now, I have no idea what a "croquembouche" is"

Oh come on! You can't be serious. I can't boil an egg (or practically) and I know what a croquembouche is.

June 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The "peeps" cake reminds me of MirrorMask...the weird bird people and the things that are half bird, half...something else...

June 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTauney

I so thought the shark cake was bleeding tampons. I so grossed myself out. Time for an eye exam.

June 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commentera little pale

Is it just me or does that shark cake look like it's covered in a bunch of slightly used tampons? Gross, I know, but that's what I thought it was.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

OMG! I thought I was the only person in the world to ever have a couple ask me to put a tank of live fish on their wedding cake! They owned a trout fishery... and wanted the cake drifting on the lake in a canoe no less. My jaw just dropped when I saw this and I had to comment!

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSara

Wow, thanks for the shark fin soup explanation. At first glance I thought that was a cake made to look like used tampons. Gross.

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

OMG, I am so glad you included a link to explanation... I thought that cake was covered with bloody tampons! ACK!

June 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnne Alagna

Hey - I was totally grossed out by this weird dead fish cake you posted a while ago..then came across it again on Flickr... here's the description - Made to be displayed as part of an awareness campaign depicting the cruelty of the brutal killings of sharks to make sharks fin soup usually served at Chinese weddings.

Here's the link:

not sure if this has already been explained...but there you go... Love your site! Can't wait to see your new book cover options! I've already pre-ordered it!
