Monica G. thinks this cake from the Wilton website looks like it's covered with rocks. I, however, say it looks like a pottery project. Covered in rocks.

I have to disagree about the Wilton cake. I love truffles, so that cake is heaven to me. mmmmmmmmmm
The third cake is definitely Koi fish, which do come in those colors...in Chinese culture, fish are symbols of prosperity, so you'll often see fish around at weddings, to wish the couple a prosperous life together.
Haha, that albino booby tower looks like a cake covered in fish balls (http://lh3.ggpht.com/choongkeat/R1_yN5BQ34I/AAAAAAAAAgo/JNDgb5YmD5Q/s800/Dumpling+%26+Fish+Ball.jpg) - made from ground fish meat, glutinous rice flour and a little salt. They're a very common food in Taiwan, Japan and parts of China.
At least the rock cake looks tasty. The fish ball cake does not.
BTW I doubt the dead-shark cake is supposed to be koi. Koi do not have to be red and white. They can be red, yellow, white, orange, or even dark blue/purple. I saw a very expensive, rare one once that was pale green. In most koi ponds in Asia, they try to strike an artistic balance of colors and stock with koi in varying colors...so if it were a koi cake (which could be really cool if done well) it'd reflect those colors.
Oh, and I like the Peep cake, but two rabbit peeps in a veil and bowtie would have been a much better topper. Is nobody allowed to have a sense of humor anymore?

Don't know if its just me but the fish tank looks like it has a seam. I am thinking its not a real tank but a paper printing wrapped around the middle of the cake.
Well, I think "koi" is Japanese for both "love" and "fish", so it could be a really, REALLY obscure pun. I hope.

The way that fish tank one is leaning just adds to the wreckiness. Otherwise it looks perfectly executed. I guess it's just a strange concept, but if that's what the bride wanted...

With that third one, I can't decide if what I'm seeing is a monstrous tower of clubbed baby seals, or the bottom of the trash can after aunt flow's come to visit. Either way, it's horrifying.
the croquembouche like cake looks like it is made out of cake balls to me. What's a cake ball? Mushed up cake and flavoring shaped into a ball and dipped into chocolate.
I sort of like the fish tank idea. (blush)
And, spinning off an idea that Silly Philly mentioned, a croque-en-bouche cake made of MALLOMARS would be *awesome*!!!

Not only are they dead whales, but they look like their dead white sperm whales. it's got something to do with Moby Dick, surely.
I'm confused.. several people pointed out the origin of the Dead shark cake and the link to back it up, yet people are still commenting that they want the back story. I thought at first that it was because the comments queue before they are posted. But nope, people just don't read the comments, or even skim them.

The red and white fish cake . . . I'm not sure I should even mention this, but I could have sworn on first glance that that cake had more to do with feminine hygiene than with fish.
These cakes are NOT OKAY! -I'll admit that the first one at least looks pretty...even if it shouldn't be a wedding cake. As for cake number 3...NOOOOOO! Yuck! For real?! The "booby cake" is a hoot (prolly cause of your comment), and the peep cake is just inexcusable.

Jenn- it's a protest against food served at weddings, that's why it has a bride and groom topper. It's not for an actual wedding.
If you go to the flickr page that numerous people have linked you can see a high-res picture with all the details apparent. The sharks are white because they've exsanguinated.

Yeah we know. We saw the Flickr page and I don't think it's Koi. But who knows? ;)
It does bring up a really interesting question though: Is it the responsibility of the commenter to read all the comments in a post before making their own? What if there are 200? What if what they want to say has been said before, but poorly? Is a comment board meant to be a conversation or a venue where people can speak their minds?
Anne-Marie (the Wrecksistant) and I (john the hubby of Jen) are the ones tasked with moderating comments on this site and, to be honest, we are thrilled when a post makes people want to speak out. It means people are participating and it makes Cake Wrecks fun.
That said, there is a case to be made that if you are going to say something with authority and certainty (anytime in life really) you should probably check your facts.

I think the aluminum foil peeking through the albino breasts is especially classy.
Any cake that leads to the usage of the word "exsanguinated" is all right with me!
(Okay, wait. This one is totally not all right. But I still think more people should get to use "exsanguinated" in everyday life.)

After seeing the close-up on the shark cake, I thought 'WTF?'. Then I read the explanation. It's sad, but not many people are aware of the cruelty of the shark-finning industry.

So, that albino booby cake was cake balls dipped in chocolate. My best guess (from the person who took the picture) is that the bride asked for a modern interpretation of a wedding cake....and that is what she got.

OMG! I thought I was the only person in the world to ever have a couple ask me to put a tank of live fish on their wedding cake! They owned a trout fishery... and wanted the cake drifting on the lake in a canoe no less. My jaw just dropped when I saw this and I had to comment!
