What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Happy Falker Satherhood!

As with the infamous USB cake, some Wrecks cannot be fully appreciated until you know the story behind them. Fortunately, you guys looove to tell me your stories - some of which I've been hoarding to include in the upcoming Cake Wrecks book - and now I think it's high time to start featuring more of them.

Ashley J. had two male coworkers each expecting a child, so the office decided to get them a cake. They wanted it to say, "Happy Fatherhood Shawn and Glenn".

Instead, they got this:

Like you, I'm sure, Ashley & the gang were just dying to know what the decorator thought he or she was writing, exactly. So, they decided to go find out. Yep, that's right: They grabbed a video camera (did I mention they work at the Fox television animation studio?) and strolled down the street to pay a little visit to the bakery in question.

Here's what happened next (the best bits are in the first 2 minutes):

"It's like a word journey" - hilarious. Oh, and Ashley writes "Please forgive the Tickle-Me-Elmo laughter coming from behind the camera...that's me."

Ashley, I think it's safe to say we all forgive you. It's just too bad the manager didn't have as much of a sense of humor as you guys did; after all, I think you and Rebner were extremely pleasant about it, all things considered. :)

I just bought the t-shirt. Classic!!!!!!!!!!

someone said it looked like "father & otherhood",
maybe since it had two men's names, the older woman decorator thought it was a gay couple adopting, and that was the right term?
bad vision could account for the cross on the t being so out of place, that it looked like the bottom of an L.
and the h and ampersand were just made funny.

What was the final outcome, what was the decorator thinking? i'm dying to know.

OMG! That is sooooooo funny! I only watched the first two minutes and they were HILARIOUS!!!!!
Thanx Jen, you continue to bring laughter into the world, even before ten o'clock in the morning!!

This had me and my friend laughing so hard we could barely breathe, and that was months ago. To this day, I cannot say "happy falker satherhood" to her because I'm laughing too hard to finish the words once I start.

So glad I viewed this before putting on my eye makeup! I'm a year behind in viewing this but laughter has no expiration date so it still was the best way to start the day. Thanks for always giving us something to laugh about!

I guess what I don't get is why someone didn't notice that when they picked up the cake! But I love the guy behind the bakery counter!

Bahahaha!
Just found your site today, I've been surfing around quite a bit and alternately giggling and facepalming, but this one I had to comment on because it reminds me soo much of something that happened to me when I was young.
When I was about six years old, I read a lot and most of my books were fairly large chapter books (this LotR. Yes, I'm serious.). My family didn't have a whole lot of money, so as extra little gifts for my birthday, my mother decided to make me some bookmarks, which was really very sweet of her. Something, however, went a little screwy in my old lady's brain, God Bless her, and I recieved one of the bookmarks with an inscription much like Happy Falker Satherhood. It read:
Mommy and Elspether
Together
Forever
There were also a number of bunnies and flowers and other things on it that little girls tend to like. So what's the problem? My name is actually Elspeth. Apparently the 'er' ending was too much to resist on all lines and I was given the bookmark without her ever even noticing. I still have it around, making me giggle now and then.
Too bad it's not a cake. Otherwise it would already be in your inbox. XP
I guess it's just proof that any of us can become wreckerators with very little difficulty.
Cheers!

Word Verification: Panatish. Obviously an obscure cake hybrid of a Danish and Spanish pan bread. With some Italian tiramisu, in there, but, shh, don't tell the in-laws or they'll disown me. :P

Soo funny! I think the guy behind the counter should be a manager. He handled the situation a lot better then the actual manager. A GREAT laugh!!:)

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJolean

Maybe there was an instruction to write it in cusive (kersave?) that got mixed in with fatherhood? That's my best guess... Wow... :)

April 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristan

I think they were being a little obnoxious about the whole situation!

June 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLucy

I'm just wondering what exactly was written on the order form for this cake....It seems a little odd that she would take "Happy Fatherhood Shawn and Glenn" and turn it around into a whole "congratulations" thing! It's possible that the people who ordered the cake were to blame not the poor little cake decorator!

June 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLucy

Um, really, was a 6-minute confrontational and humiliating video really necessary? Mean-sprited and ridiculous. The cake speaks for itself.

June 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That is a hilarious video . But hey, they work at a big company like Fox and they got a cake from the grocery store. Of course i do think that our local grocery store makes delicious cake, I unfortunately can't leave without buying some.

I’ve been reading (but not posting) on this site since forever. Yes, I’m a lurker. Interestingly, I haven’t had a cake wreck since I started reading.

This is the best story yet. Not the best wreck, but definitely the most interesting. Kudos to Ashley for taping it, although she sounds more like an alto Anderson Cooper than Elmo. However, it’s been more than 16 1/2 months and there’s still no resolve to this mystery. What was the cake writing thinking? I’ve taken this thing apart every which way I can but can’t come up with anything that would make sense. I got ‘falkers at her hood’ but that doesn’t make sense either. Does anyone have a follow-up on this?

i wouldn't have smiled if i were the manager-lady. ugh. working in the grocery store, doing my job, and up come a couple of giggly, snide brats whose goal seems to be nothing more than to embarrass the wreckerator on video. ugh. please, no cheerfully mean hipsters with video cameras at my work. anonymous poking-fun is all good, but don't bring it IRL. jmho.

Ok - so here is what I think happened.

The decorator started writing 'Fatherhood' but being on autopilot, wrote 'Fathers' before asking - "Wait - is it Father's Day?" Now, as they were interrupted in the middle, they hadn't crossed the T, and the H was a little wonky, so at this point what they'd written looked more like 'Falkers'.

And when they were told, no, it's supposed to say 'Fatherhood', they went, 'Oh, right' and carried on. But for some reason - cos they were chatting about Desperate Housewives, were using illegal substances, whatever - they didn't check how far they'd got, and carried on with 'atherhood'.

Hence, 'Happy Falkersatherhood.' That's my two pennorth, anyway.

That poor crusty manager! She needs to eat more cake! If that was me I would be sitting there busting my gut and asking why I hired a woman that makes cakes like that. Hell I would even give her a raise because these guys will be return customers for sure!

February 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter?

Perhaps- and this is just a guess because she's rather old- but have you ever been typing or writing and someone starts talking and you start typing what they say on accident? I do that alot. Maybe that's what happened? Maybe someone was talking to her while she was writing, or maybe another decorator was spelling aloud and she wrote the \"Fa\" and then got lost, and then came back to \"therhood\" without realizing she'd deviated from the word. I'm literally sitting here at 2 a.m. cracking up hysterically. Hope my roommates don't wake up XD!

I don't mean to sound dumb... but what does "Falker Satherhood" or whatever exactly mean?? What's the joke??

March 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAbby

Haha, great.

I *think* this is what happened:
They started to write Happy Fathers Day...got to fathers...before crossing the t...realized their mistake and just wrote 'atherhood'...so father became falker...see how the k in falker and the h in Satherhood look pretty much the same? and the l is just an uncrossed t?

But still...they left those 'wrong' letters right there on the cake!!

too funny!!!

June 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterantz

That manager really needs to lighten up. I know it's her job to handle situations that are difficult, but it isn't even like anyone was mad. Maybe she needs to start celebrating Falker Sutherhood to raise her level of joyocity.

June 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

That was Sooooooooo funny. I couldn't stop laughing.

August 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermiri

I don't care how many times I watch this video, I end up in a fit of laughter each time!!

September 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPureKaos

Oh, I love the guy working at the cake counter... First he laughs his ass off and then seems to be sincerely sorry for the guys' getting their fatherhood party spoiled by the cake... Lovely man. :-)

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKetutar

I don't think it's so much that the customer service lady had no sense of humor as that working at a customer service counter in a department store, you see EVERYTHING, and after an 8-hour or longer shift, nothing is going to seem like anything but more trouble and a potential headache and disaster.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVinemaple

Happy Falkersatherhood!

December 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEdison Amery-Zwartz

I know this is really old but the comments about how the lady was feeling are intrusive. She's not coming to your job and telling you how to feel about it, now is she?
