Sunday Sweets Visits the 80s
February 22, 2009 Sunday Sweets is my weekly NON-Wrecks feature, the better to show how wrecky the Wrecks really are.
I grew up in the 80s, so I have a bit of a soft spot for the music, the movies, and the retina-searing color combinations of that decade. I also make funny squealing noises when I see references to nearly-forgotten loves like the Wuzzles or that Hugga Bunch made-for-TV movie. (Hey, even geek girls were girly girls at age 6, right?)
All that to say, here are some fun 80s-inspired Sweets for y'all.

This next one combines 3 great 80s icons: the Rubik's cube, Super Mario, and the oh-so-popular Garbage Pail Kids. (I had a whole album of those cards growing up. I'm guessing a little after the Hugga Bunch phase.)

And I know Wheel of Fortune is still on the air, but since I had a Vanna White t-shirt in 4th grade it will always be 80s to me.

it's funny that you mention Poochie....I just got my daughter a Poochie book at a book swap! No one else remembered her!!!
You just made my morning with the Gummy Bear cake. When I was a kid and had to have my tonsils removed, I got a Gummy Bear teddy bear as a gift for being "brave". One of my favorite things ever.
And the DeLorean is awesome!! Does it have its own frosting flux capacitor?

Oh! Oh! I'm SO GLAD I'm not the only one who remembers the Hugga Bunch movie. Just this past Tuesday, I was trying to describe it (and the dolls) to some friends, and they looked at me like I was crazy. Oh, the validation.

of course i remember poochie, but the question is, does anyone remember foofur? i had a stuffed foofur when i was a kid and that thing went EVERYWHERE with me. sadly, no one ever seems to remember him...
This is great! I collected Garbage Pail Kids stickers, too, and had a crush on MJF (they filled part of part 3 in my hometown, and part of that by my junior high, so I'd always peer out the bus window to catch a peek). I hope someone sends in a Dungeons and Dragons cake, complete with a giant Tiamat!
Hmmm. I've got a friend whose got an actual DeLorean in his driveway. I'd love to get him that cake!

Hugga Bunch!! My mom actually got me the DVD last year for Christmas. The 80's were a wonderful time!

Okay, you said Hugga Bunch movie. I love you. No one ever remembers tat movie! Do you remember when I think it was Taco Bell was giving out the little dolls? My older cousins all collected them for me.
And Gummi Bears! I just bought those DVDs late last year.
OMG thank you SO MUCH for that link to the Hugga Bunch movie! I used to watch that movie everyday (my dad taped it for me off tv). A few years ago, I tore my parents' house up looking for the VHS, but had no success. It's just as good as I remember it LOL

I can't believe someone, besides me, remembers Poochie the Dog. Not to mention the Hugga Bunch movie with those weird apricot things. How about Popples???
And through an ironic reversal, the Gummi Bears cake was just the result of a misunderstanding when the customer, completely unaware of the cartoon show, asked for gummi bear candies on top of the cake.

You know, the Wheel of Fortune one is really clever, because you have all your slices sectioned out already. You can just cut out every slice perfectly. Now if only other cakes could pull that off sans the WoF theme...
I still remember all the words to the Gummy Bears show theme song...nice to see cakes that are done well and remind us of our happy pasts !
thank you for posting the link Branded in the 80's. It brought me way back to childhood and I realized, I have a LOT of those same stickers! I cant wait to get home and look at my collection again! That was sure fun!

YES! to H R Puf'n'Stuf and the Bugaloos! I sooo had a crush on the guy "Jimmy" from HR, Davey Jones, a young Scott Baio AND Michael J. Fox. Something about those, cute, short, dark-haired guys I guess.

I had a Rainbow Brite cake when I was a kid. My mom gave them a picture to draw it from, and when we got the cake, they'd given the cake Rainbow Brite a mustache.
I can't believe that you mentioned Hugga Bunch. I have this movie to this day (no I don't watch it, but I have it). I never realized it was at all popular.

And Poochie!! I knew her well! She had "flower-power" pawpads shaped like daisies, right? And she was a little girl's pet, BUT SECRETLY an advice columnist for a magazine.
I still have a Poochie record! One of those mini records with a book to read along... It's called "Dear Poochie" I think. haha Good memories!

I had a Ghostbusters logo cake back when I was a kid. It was homemade, and it looked awesome. Don't think I have any pictures to share tho. : /

I am not the only one, who after watching the Hugga Bunch movie, stood in front of the mirror, hugging the crap out of my hugga bunch doll and pressing the mirror, just in case it really worked.
The Wheel Of Fortune cake is mine, you have had some of my best and worst on here.www.charleyandthecakefactory.com. I am a military wife and have only been making cakes out of my home for three years. This one was for a gentlemen in Camp Pendleton CA who was on the show during Armed Forces week.

I love the 80s! I'm an 80s child and have the birthday cakes to prove it-all proudly made by my mom.
Most were made using Wilton pans but she DID freehand a phenomenal She-Ra cake for me for my 7th birthday...I must find a picture of it!

Was Wheel of Fortune really around in the 80's in the US?
I'm sure it didn't reach our shores here in the UK until well into the 1990s. We are always so far behind the US!
