Sunday Sweets Visits the 80s

Sunday Sweets is my weekly NON-Wrecks feature, the better to show how wrecky the Wrecks really are.
I grew up in the 80s, so I have a bit of a soft spot for the music, the movies, and the retina-searing color combinations of that decade. I also make funny squealing noises when I see references to nearly-forgotten loves like the Wuzzles or that Hugga Bunch made-for-TV movie. (Hey, even geek girls were girly girls at age 6, right?)
All that to say, here are some fun 80s-inspired Sweets for y'all.
Remember these guys?
Sing it with me, Carrie G.: "Gummi Beeeaars! Bouncing here and there and EV'rywhere..."This next one combines 3 great 80s icons: the Rubik's cube, Super Mario, and the oh-so-popular Garbage Pail Kids. (I had a whole album of those cards growing up. I'm guessing a little after the Hugga Bunch phase.)
Marylse found this on Jessica Claire's photography site (which you should check out to see pics of the raddest 80's prom-themed shower ever) and it was made by Sweet Gems Custom Cakes.
And I know Wheel of Fortune is still on the air, but since I had a Vanna White t-shirt in 4th grade it will always be 80s to me.
Sara D., would you like to buy a vowel?
(Note: sorry, I've once again lost track of the original e-mail link, so if you know who made this, please let me know so I can credit the baker!)
And lastly, Karen C. found a cake that really takes me back...
Love it love it love it. And I still have a crush on Michael J. Fox. [wistful sigh]Ok, this was just too much fun to stop the 80s theme now. That's right, you heard me: the e-mail lines are NOW open, folks, so go forth and find me 80s Sweets! I'm talking the cartoons (Snorks, anyone?) the games, the toys (Slinky, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch - you get the idea), the movies (GhostBUSTERS!), and yes even the music (I know there's a Thriller cake out there somewhere). Send your finds to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.
And if you find all these blasts from the past just as fun as I do, you should check out the sticker section on Branded in the 80s. Anyone else remember Poochie the dog? Anyone?

did you see these cakes?
I just dig that Wheel of Fortune cake.
I'm so glad someone else remembers the Wuzzles!!! "We're the Wuzzles...oh oh yeah!" :)
Okay...my moment is over. Carry on.
OH wait!! AND the Popples!! http://www.popplespopp.com/
If someone can make a Popples & Wuzzles cake, they would be the most awesome cake baker ever. :)
I used to get up early with my brother to watch Gummi Bears. And I had a little stuffed Poochie dog. :)
i thought they were Cabbage PATCH kids??
I'm a child of the 80's and have never heard of the Wuzzles or Hugga Bunch! Maybe it was for really little kids in the 80's? I was 11/12 in 1980.
The '80s ... a very good decade for me, since that's when I met and married spouse!
My favorite is the Rubik's cube.
Eighties cakes I would like to see: MTV logo (back when it really DID mean Music Television); Weather Channel cake (when Jim Cantore, who is one of my great loves, still had hair); and a SINISTAR cake, since that is my all-time favorite video game!
Best Sunday sweets ever! I am an 80's lover as well and had a lovely trip down memory lane as I followed your link to the huggabunch movie (Yes I am over 25 and just spent an hour watching the huggabunch made for tv movie!)
Your Awesome!
A couple of summers ago I was in Romania visiting a friend's family, and had my back to the TV, which was on and tuned to a Hungarian station. I jumped about a foot when I heard a familiar theme song, and turned around in disbelief to see... Gummi Bears, in Hungarian.
Totally awesome. :-D
although i wasn't technically an 80's kid, i was conceived in the 80's, and i was a HUGE fan of the gummi bears. i've asked countless people if they remember them, yet none do.
so today this made me super happy. i know now i'm not completely insane.
-kate
Not only do I remember Poochie the dog, I still have Poochie the dog.
I'm thinkin' we need some Smurf wrecks. :)
Wuzzles and Popples, oh yeah. They somehow managed to bring back the Care Bears, I notice, but you never see a Wuzzle anywhere (except on pictures of my kids' Halloween costumes, 1986.)
Can I request someone make a GlowWorm cake??? My granny still has my green one in her closet full of toys :)
SWEET! Love the 80s! LOL

bareknittingtogether ...
Oh, thanks. Now I got 'One banana, two banana, three banana, four ...' stuck in the soundtrack to be followed the next half hour with 'H.R. Puffinstuff -- he's your friend when things get rough.' Yep. 'Can't get a little, can't get enought!'
Love the Rubik & Mario. Neat cards -- edible ink on white chocolate?
Jen- I love you for mentioning Poochie. I have a collection of over 200 Poochie items from all over the world.
I have my original puppy my Mom gave me when I was 4 (she also made me a fabulous Poochie cake). Then I've added to my collection books, stampers, tape players, radios, tea sets (plastic and ceramic), halloween costumes, hair accessories, note pads, pencils, figurines, puppets, bath towels and even an original animation cell from the cartoon.
She's my obsession and one day I am going to put together a website for her.
If anyone wants to share a Poochie story (or has questions about her) email me at amrose _ you (at)yahoo dot com
That was such a fun flashback! These cakes were so awesome.
And I will readily admit to spontaneously bursting forth with the Gummi Bears theme song at random times. (Just ask my husband...)
Hey- if you are into more 80's flashbacks, I am currently featuring an awesome collection of 80's tunes on my blog-

The 80's had the REAL Wheel of Fortune - back when people still got to go shopping on set with the cash they'd won. They almost always had to use up the last bit with one of those horrid porcelain dalmatian sculptures...
I made a pretty rad Ghostbusters cake for my brother's most recent birthday, but I don't think it really qualifies as a sunday sweet ^_^;
Verification Word: panti. *snark*
"You made a birthday cake out of DeLorean!?"
Awesome. Simply awesome.
I still remember EVERY WORD to the Gummie Bears theme song. The 80's...what a riot.
And I think I'm going to request the Wheel of Fortune cake for my next birthday.
Dying to see the technical skills required to make a Slinky cake...
Jem and the Holograms....truly, truly, truly outrageous!
Poochie! I remember Poochie. In fact, my mom nicknamed my little sister Poochie because she randomly found a videotape of a Poochie episode and watched until the tape wore out. My sister is twenty years old now, and Mom still calls her Poochie.
I LOVED Poochie!!! I had a little stamp of here, her paw prints were flowers!!! Awwwwwww.....
I NEED a Delorian cake. And of course I remember the Poochie dolls, I had one. Along with some sort of giant plastic/rubber Poochie-themed sheet with rubber sticker-like things that went on it. It had a very particular smell that I will never forget.
Which reminds me, I smelled something the other day that was a dead ringer for the Strawberry Shortcake doll. Sweet and plastic, oh baby.
Ah, I heart the '80s. I actually pulled out my '80s-era sticker books a few weeks ago.
What an adorable blog! Someone commented about how much they liked your blog on my blog so I had to stop by!

Great, now I have the Wuzzles theme song stuck in my head. Hahaha! Man, I loved that show!
Ooh they got originality...living with a split personality!
I adore the 80s extravaganza!
Those are some totally 'sweet' cakes.
Sadly, I too, am too old to even know what Poochie is/was, BUT, the 80's to me are: polo shirts, Kaepa tennis shoes, Ralph Lauren jeans, M-TV (with actual music), Sony walkmans, very large car phones, Duran Duran. Oh My GOD, like, totally!
Love the DeLorean!
I still remember the Gummi Bears fondly. It was one of the great shows.
I was driving to a friend's house one evening and actually saw a DeLorean being driven down the road. I couldn't get a picture of it because I was driving, and my 6 year old didn't have steady enough hands to take a picture with my cellphone either.
Remember Poochie? But of course. I had a tea set and a stamper. You pushed on her head, her ears would go up and a stamp on her bottom hit your paper. Loved her!
PS..So glad I'm not the only one who remembers the Hugga Bunch movie. People always look at me like I'm crazy when I bring it up.
I was listening to Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourn while looking at this. total 80's over here! I love the Delorian cake.
I was so excited to see the Gummi Bears cake! When hubby & I were in Vietnam 2 years ago, Gummi Bears was on every morning during breakfast. Ahh, the memories. The first day trying to remember why we knew the show & then timing our breakfast each day to catch the latest episode. Good times...
I googled "thriller cake" and here is what I found- http://flickr.com/photos/acapturedmoment/2256426721/
These cakes are all kinds of awesome!
Oh my gosh! I almost stopped breathing when I saw the Gummi Bear cake! I want one! I want one! The Gummi Bears was our favorite show when we were kids! It was actually just released on DVD, and we definitely got three copies in my family this Christmas...
By the way, I've been following this blog almost since it started, and I absolutely adore it, but this is the first time I've commented - yay '80s! :)
I remember Poochie! Her pink sunglasses were AWESOME! The Hugga Bunch movie was great, I wanted to go through the mirror. Gummi Bears rock, we still sing that song. Thanks for the nostalgia!!
I had poochie shrinky-dinks and yes a stamper as well.
Does anyone else remember the monchichis?
pound puppies/purries?
Good times.
You want 80's? Icanhascheezburger has a new user submission site: http://onceuponawin.com/
All the nostalgia for you kids of the 80's!
I used to love watching Gummi Bears!! :) I have to admit that I started singing the theme song straight away!! :) [I should say that I was born in the mid-eighties, but I love 80s-themed stuff!!]
I also remember Poochie a little bit...I still have my Poochie toy!! Talk about vintage!! LOL :)
Oh, the 80s! I remember my mom made me a Popple cake for my birthday one year. It was really impressive, at least to me at the time!
This just makes me think of a great music video mashup of 80s teen movies... let me dig it out...

Oh, the 80s. How we sort of miss you. And your hair.
Rubix cubes are so not over--my sixth grade students are obsessed with them! There are always at least five floating around on a given day.
They're so cute!
My childhood's never looked so sweet before.
HUGGABUNCH! Oh god, I have such a love/hate relationship with that movie. I absolutely LOVED it, up until I had my first ever (remembered, at least) nightmare because of it. I had a dream that I was pulled through the mirror into nothingness and woke up terrified lol. Ah, the mind of a child... hehe.
80's KIDS, UNITE! :D
OH. MY. GOSH! I didn't know other people remembered Hugga Bunch! I made my friends watch that at every slumber party until I was 13 (shortly after which my brother taped over it). We thought it was hilarious.
AH, the memories! Am I the only one, who after watching the Hugga Bunch movie, stood in front of the mirror, hugging the crap out of my hugga bunch doll and pressing the mirror, just in case it really worked? I can't be the only one!
Those cakes are totally rad for sure!
