What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Show and Tell

I have to say, you Wreckies are an impressive bunch. Not only do you enjoy making some intentional Wreckage and/or beautiful Sweets in your off hours, but you also take the time to e-mail me cake stories - both hilarious and heart-warming - along with your photos. I had some particularly good e-mails this past week, and realized it'd been far too long since I shared any with the rest of the class. So, here ya go.

Remember that lovely Unicorn cake I featured a while back on Sunday Sweets - the one based on the tapestry? Well, Johanna's sister loved it. So for her birthday, Johanna decided to get her sister a cake that looked exactly like the Unicorn cake. And it does. See?

[snicker]

This could be the best use of a photo cake I've seen, Johanna. Excellent.

Patrick B. got a little more hands-on, and decided to recreate the horrific dolly-cake himself. I think his version might even be a bit better, though:

Patrick, this cake brings a particular childhood memory to mind...
[cue flashback harp music]
Yes, I remember it well: I was about 6 years old, and watching my mother put on her make-up in the bathroom mirror. I was so absorbed I didn't realize that the toilet seat was up until I sat down - with a splash. Ah, misty, water-colored memories...

And finally, I'm pleased as spiked punch to report that Cake Wrecks is officially The Blog of Champions. Check it out:

That, my friends, is Breanna K., the Best in Show winner of the AZ Cake and Sugar Art Show held last weekend. And yes, she is wearing a Cake Wrecks shirt. Woohoo!

Breanna, mad props for showing your Wrecky loyalty at a cake show, and for doing such an amazing job with your tutu cake. Can you believe she's not even a professional, guys? Wow, maybe there's hope for the rest of us, eh?

And to all the rest of you who have e-mailed me in the past: thank you! I may not be able to answer you all individually, but I really do enjoy and appreciate every single one of your e-mails!

Ever since I saw that submerged baby cake I've wanted to try it - but if you bake it in, the baby will melt in the oven, no?
If you do it afterwards, that involves dismantling a baby and setting it in cake. Horrific.
Wrecktastically horrific.

I want to know how to make the cake with the dolly inside... I think that would be awesome for my next baby shower that I throw! Patrick B, if you have any hints, let me know!

The wrecks are funny, as always, but omgosh, I am in amazement at your cake wreck champion's tutu cake!!! If my little ballerina catches sight of that, I'm in trouble come birthday time. I fear even the best of the local cake decorators would end up in the inspiration vs. persperation section if I asked them to try it!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJill

And it's my design! Woohoo!

Still lovin' every post!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhil DeJarnett

What a beautiful job she did with her corset cake! Congrats!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDoodleBunz/DB Impressions

I think the only thing that would make the baby cake better would be an extra limb maybe. Hilarious!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHorribleLicensePlates

Johanna, that was perfect. There should be some sort of separate award out there for your creativeness! Thumbs up!

The unicorn cake is beautifully meta. Well done.

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRAK

Ooh, so I could get a sheet cake decorated with a picture of the cake that is decorated with a picture of the unicorn cake.

And then I could get a picture of THAT cake on ANOTHER cake...

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Breanna's t-shirt is at the show is how I foud this site and love it. She is amazing and her cake was well deserving of Best of Show.

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVicki

i think you are right the baby cake is better! and i love the pic of a cake on a cake.. priceless!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

Haha, I love the photo thing. That's hilarious.

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFreedomFirst

That tutu cake is just COOL! Love the Cake Wrecks shirt.

Oh, and the "tapestry" cake had me falling out of my chair for a while. Brilliant though!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZoey

Hehe brilliant idea with the unicorn cake! At least little sister won't be adamant that Johanna didn't follow her wishes. =D

Ooooh I particularly like the bottom part of the tutu cake!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hilarious as usual! Congrat's Breanna on winning Best in Show, your cake is gorgeous :)

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTamsyn

I saw Breanna's cake on Cake Central and loved it. I still want to know how she made that tutu. Awesome.

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love them all!!

I'm extremely impressed by the non-professional baker and her beautiful cake and the confidence she's showing by wearing her cake wrecks t-shirt to the event! BRAVO!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCathy Davis

It's ironic how 'Cake Wrecks' goes after people for a typo or two on a cake, but spells "underneath" wrong on their t-shirt.

Unless, of course, that was done on purpose.

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMoose of Reason

You mean there is more than one of me? Cool. Cause I am patrick B and that cake is not mine. I wish, i could use something sweet right now.

The toilet seat story was classic! Ha-Ha, you just made my day!

Oh, that last cake looks so beautiful and so good. *dreams of sugary creme cake*

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Lunar Fox

OH MAN THAT BABY CAKE: all ive every wanted is a doll or barbie cake but i fear it would look like that (but is that bad?)

also, TUTU CAKE + CAKE WRECK SHIRT = PRICELESS

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkf

to get the doll in the cake you actually just use the parts. you can buy a whole doll and dismantle or go to any craft store and buy the the parts separately and stick them in after baking and before decorating.

ANDY STOLED MY IDEA!! NO FAIR....I"M TELLING!!

JEN, ANDY STOLED MY IDEA, AND IT WAS GOING TO BE MY FIRST EVER PICTURE I SENT TO CAKE WRECKS ! And it was going to be DANG FUNNY.....
DANGIT! I WAS GOING TO DO THAT....
and you were going to love it, and say that I had really taken it to the next level, and then you were going to write me a personal note, and then we were going to be BFF and I was going to help you with your blog because I'm almost as funny as you, and stuff, and hilarity would ensue and then people were going to say boy-oh-boy this Cakewrecks Plus One Site is really the tops----man-o-man, Jen has a real great assistant now......it's sort of like Heart is the Vice-President....

(except, really Andy...I only thought of doing the ONE sheet cake with a picture of that cake on it..... I didn't keep on and on, like you were going to do....so maybe Jen will choose you to be vice-President of CakeWrecks International, instead of me. You really deserve it.)

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterheartafire

Hey! Just figured a way to make the baby cake - bake the cake, then cut & hollow it out to fit the baby! *facepalm*

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I just wanted to say thank you for your blog.

Right now tragedy* consumes us here in Australia and it is just such a relief to know that each day I can click on Cake Wrecks and get smile.

Thank you.

This is the best day ever!!! I can't believe I am on Cake Wrecks!!! I just called or emailed everyone I know! WOOHOO!

February 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBreanna K.

Bravo, Breanna K! I love looking at the cakewrecks and laughing until I cry, but it's also great to see such a gorgeous cake. How did you do the tutu?

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen F.

It's striking me as ironic that a site for us cake lovers features shirts that run EXTRA SMALL.

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterweb

Oh my GOSH that tutu cake has me in complete awe. That actually makes me miss the two years of ballet I took (I was downright AWFUL), if only for the pretty clothes. And edible pretty clothes? Yes, please!

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIn the Meantime

The tutu cake is too, too fabulous! LOL Okay, bad joke... sorry. I want to know how the ruffles were made. Is that fondant or gumpaste or just icing? It is fantastic!

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShelley

Not an extra limb, but a tail; now that is what the baby cake needs. The tutu cake is absolutely extraordinary. I love it.

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterjulieNarlington

That baby is a double wreck - not only does it really look like it's drowning in a vat of icing but - now this might just be me or my monitor's brightness setting - it's filthy! I think that baby was playing in the mud before falling into the cake!

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjenny

Seriously, people, you don't BAKE the BABY!
You make the beautiful cake, ice it, and then bury the edges of the neck and 4 limbs and ice around them with the beading.
It's an ILLUSION.
HorribleLicensPlate---loved your comment, and you're absolutely right. (especially if it was an extra limb from a larger or smaller doll)

(maybe a Barbie leg?)

I am in awe of the gorgeous tutu cake too. The layers of pink tulle are truly magnificent. Breanna, you are an amazing artist.

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterheartafire

I had the pleasure of ogling the tutu cake in person this past weekend...most amazing cake! She did a knock out job, and deserved her Best In Show win!

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I am like Breanna K, I emailed everyone and told them about being on Cake Wrecks! It feels like an honor. Esp to have my silly idea paired with two amazing cakes! My sis is already drooling over the tutu cake...maybe next year. :)

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJohanna

I LOVE the song reference! Misty, watercolor memories indeed!!!

I sent Jen a cake picture this week and for a moment I was all excited that she was going to put it on the blog. But don't worry, I'm not disappointed. I'm going to make the next cake I make so spectacular that she has to include it next time she features readers' cakes.

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAviatrix

Yay for meta-cakes!

February 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCalandra

That unicorn cake is so freaking amazing. I love it.

Also, I can't BELIEVE that tutu cake baker is not a professional. Really??!! No way!

February 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

Ooh, so I could get a sheet cake decorated with a picture of the cake that is decorated with a picture of the unicorn cake.

And then I could get a picture of THAT cake on ANOTHER cake...

Haha... Recursive cake!

February 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTaross

So.... why is Breanna K. NOT a professional? I mean... WOW! That is a nice cake!! =D

February 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEriisu-chan

OMG! Did you see the decapitated eagle head in the background of that gorgeous cake? Patriotism FAIL!

February 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSharon Rose

That baby cake made me want to have an episode.

That beautiful tutu cake is amazing. She has a future career if you ask me.
