What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Sesame Street

Sesame Street is turning 40 this week, so consider these Sweets a few virtual birthday cakes for everyone's favorite Street.

Was Baby Cookie Monster ever on Sesame Street? More importantly, when the cake is this adorable, does it matter? :)

(By A Cake For You)

Aw, look at lil' Bert & Ernie:

Robyn and her mom made this adorable number for little Miller:

And here's our fondant-free cake of the week:

And lastly, a few of my favorite characters. The Count...

Oscar...

And what has to be the world's biggest Big Bird cake:

Awesome. This was Mike's Amazing Cakes entry for the Food Network Sesame Street challenge. (Well, technically, this was their practice cake. Here's the final entry:)

So happy birthday, Sesame Street! Here's to 40 more years. :)

I think these cakes are amazing. It really shows how much people love Sesame Street. I was just thinking how awesome a Bert and Ernie wedding cake would be and then I remember that my sister played "But I Like You" at her wedding. I recommend finding the lyrics online.

I think I was the first generation to grow up with Sesame Street as I am 44. Of course, I did not realize it at the time. These wonderful cakes bring a nostalgic tear to me eye- thank you!

I completely love that Oscar the Grouch cake! So adorable!

My not-quite-two-year-old son looked at the Big Bird cake and said, "Whoa. Dat big."

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJHill

These are some of my favorite cakes you have featured. I can't even pick a favorite!

I think this is my favorite Sunday Sweets. While the steampunk stuff was AWESOME, this one is just too adorably sweet.

That oscar cake is freaking awesome and deserves accolades.

Those are beautiful. And in answer to your question, Baby Cookie Monster did appear a couple of times, mostly in the Sesame Beginnings DVD series, but also at least once on the show itself -- during a musical flashback to the first time Cookie Monster ever tried cookies. (He remembers that before he became obsessed with cookies, his name used to be Sid.)

aieeeee, I love it! The baby Cookie Monster is adorable, and the last one is nothing short of astonishing!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Wow!!! That last cake is truly amazing! And the rest are sooo sweet!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeray

These are amazing! Seasame Street will always be special to me, it's the only TV our mom would let us watch for hours on end when we were little... I guess she figured it was better than anything else on TV. I hope it's on forever. SHe made my brother an Oscar cake when he was young... sadly, I think it would have fallen into the wrecks division. Thanks for the post :o)

I never realized before you started posting about Sesame Street that it's only one day older than I am!!

These are incredible! I'd be happy to receive any of these cakes for my birthday, wedding, whatever. Hooray for 40 years of Sesame Street! :)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZedral Z

Awesome!!!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Wynn

I love Sesame Street! These cakes are so amazing. I'm always astounded by sculpted cakes, All of Big Birds weight is balanced entirely on one leg in that one cake, it boggles the mind.

But where's Grover? (I know, kids today, they all want Elmo, sigh)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYota Armai

The Count always scared the crap out of my little sister. I wonder if, in our mid-30s, I could terrorize her by serving her this cake? ;) I wouldn't do that.

Jen: you must look at target's sunday paper ad today. (it's on sunday saver.com) *target* is now selling its own CCCs -- and they're pretty wrecktastic.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEtiquette Bitch

No wonder the Google homepage had Sesame Street icons few days back! It was an anniversary! :-D

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFoodTechie

These cakes are fabulous. I do have to wonder how they are going to serve that last one without severing Big Birds head in a very gruesome way though =)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

All I can say is WOW. Every single one of these cakes is phenominal. *___*

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermolly

See, that's why Mike McCarey does so well at Challenges compared to so many others, because he DOES practice and do full cakes in advance. It drives me batty when competitors whine that something didn't work because it's the first time they ever did it (unless the competition had a required mystery element, but even then, you don't try new techniques for the first time at Challenge).

Mike McCarey = CAKE GOD.

And Lauren Kitchens was pretty amazing at that Challenge too.

(PS both of them will be judging and doing demos at the Austin cake show!)

These are awesome! I think Oscar is my favorite (might be because of my disposition though... LOL!)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJJ Sobey

They're soooo adorable! I want them all.

My favorite ones are the letters, definitely.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTia Paula

:O How the holy heck is the big bird cake standing so well on one foot??? Seems like defying gravity.

:p At least to me anyway.

:D All are AWESOME of course!

I posted some of my favorite Sesame Street songs on my Facebook page the other day to celebrate.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGoof

A-DOR-A-BLE!!!!

my daughter would be disappointed not to see a grover cake though.

he was (and still IS, at her ripe old age of 27) her very favorite.

"hello everybodeeeeeeeee! it is i, grover!" --grover

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTerry Lee

Oh, sweeet!!!!!
Thanks for the yummy memories today. Cookie Monster was my favorite, and so was that cute as a button cake. :-)
And I missed that particular Challenge episode. How the heck did he get that really big Big Bird balanced on only the one leg? Amazing.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHobbit

Oscar is my favorite character. *sings* Oh I love trash! I love it because it's trash!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiranda

Ooooh! I LOVE the Count cake! And that fondant-free one is fantastic!

I realize I am in the minority when I say that I did not care much for Sesame Street while growing up (in the late 70's). I was more of a Muppet Show-type of gal. But now that I have a little girl, I have come to fully appreciate the joys of Sesame Street.

Happy Birthday, Sesame Street!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

The Miller cake is one of the cutest I've ever seen. I wish I had a bigger picture of it!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRachel Gray

All of these cakes make me smile. I'm so glad that Sesame Street has made it to 40.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfeathergirl

Donna, I'm 44 too, and I started watching Sesame Street from the beginning, I'm guessing, since I don't remember a time when it wasn't there. I watched with all four of my kids, and someday (although not too soon, I hope!) hope to watch it with my grandchildren. These cakes are adorable and almost wipe out the horror of the Big Bird cakes from a few days ago. *Almost.*

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelindaB65

The first one is so adorable!! Definitely my Favorite!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCheressa

AWESOME! Flash backs of childhood are slapping me in the face...leaving me bruised, but with a big ol' smile :)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNicci

How much of that last cake is actually cake and/or food-like substances?

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

i saw the challenge with the Big Bird. It is pretty real looking and must have been fantastic in real life.

He won but the monster in his cake is his own creation and he got in trouble with the judges for this. I thought he could have put horms on it and called it a honker.

These cakes are fantastic , heck at 30 something i would not mind any kind of big bird cake

this weeks' Sunday Sweets makes me soooooo happy!!

This comment brought to you by the letter "J."

Dear Jen and John,

A couple of days ago you posted an entry with terrible Big Bird wrecks. And then you posted a link of Big Bird on Hollywood Squares. This inspired me to click the related videos over to the side in You Tube.

So, ultimately, I blame you for making me cry:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrZyMptC2eQ "Big Bird at Jim Henson's Memorial."

I suggest that you don't click any other suggested videos or you'll cry even more.

Sincerely,
Green

my cake-obsessed 5yo loved looking at all the cakes, thank you for posting them as you've totally made my Sunday :-) Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermicaela

I actually saw that show on food network, it was really amazing! I love watching them making them and sometimes them falling apart while transporting...The count is my favorite character, but they did a great job on the Oscar cake too!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSabrina

Love it how Sesame Street has now spanned 2 generations. My kids are in the other room watching it right this very moment! Love it that they get to grow up with a show that I remember loving as kid! And it's still one of the best kid's shows on TV!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMommyAmy

Happy Birthday Sesame Street! I actually saw the Food Network Challenge segment when they were making the cakes, and they were all so good!
My favorite of the ones that you posted would have to be the first. So cute!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBookworm

My 2-yr old saw that last cake and said, "Mommy look. Big Bird!" All winners in our house. Thanks for the amazing Sesame cakes.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTari

Oh, that Oscar cake is the best!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterA Paperback Writer

I remember Mike's cake from the challenge. If I remember correctly, Big Bird is mostly rice krispie treats with armature underneath. But it is food stuffs. He did a really amazing job.

I think The Count is my favorite, though. Just so simple and sweet, and a family favorite from when I was a kid :)

These nearly help me get over the wrecks of poor Big Bird...

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBek

Cakes I hate to love because inner child is freaking out knowing a big knife is in the future. *shudder*

As for nostalgic tearjerkers, see:

First time i listened to this was in a car I was driving. Baaaad mistake. RainX doesn't work for this type of waterworks.

*sigh* off to watch my Muppet DVDs

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermsyendor

Wow. These are really impressive. :)

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

These cakes are just too cool!!!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Wow, amazing is certainly the operative word for the Big Bird cake! I really like the fondant-free and Count ones, too.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNYCGirl

Holy amazing!!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLittle Lovables

I do wish that Lauren Kitchens' cake had been posted here too, just because I loved its originality (the parody of Food Network Challenge was very much in the spirit of Sesame Street!) Her pictures are at

http://fancycakesbylauren.blogspot.com/2009/07/food-network-challenge-sesame-street_26.html

Still, I have to agree that Mike McCarey is just amazing to watch, and his Big Bird cake totally deserved the win.

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Love Sesame Street...
and love that Count cake!!!

November 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Thanks, Green, for the link. I can still rate Jim Henson as the celebrity whose death upset me the most, even though I was in high school at the time, and it's been 20 years next May! (I am having trouble believing either of those facts, actually.) "Thank you, Kermit." *sniffle*

As for these cakes today--W-O-W! I don't want to cut them up any more than the Bird Birds from the other day, but for entirely different reasons. These I want to preserve for display on the mantel or something.
