What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Celebrity Wrecks

Sure, they're rich, famous, and always get to fly first-class. But guess what? They get Wrecks, too.

These "olives" (in honor of Kristin's character Olive on Pushing Daisies) aren't too bad, but the bakery decided to make a nicely symmetrical pair instead of the single olive requested. I simply cannot imagine why. [wink]

This was made for the 10th anniversary of P Diddy's record label Bad Boys. Given the caliber of that lil' homeboy elephant-baby on top, though, I could have sworn it was for a baby shower.

"This cost me how much?"

The Hulk's family recently celebrated how "greatful" they were for their son Nick.

And the "Unbelievably Insensitive" award goes to...

...whoever thought it was a good idea to remind 10-year-old Bindi that she doesn't have a father anymore. On her birthday. (The most un-funny Wreck I have ever witnessed, folks.)

And last but not least, guess whose sweet sixteen cake this was?

That's right: it was for our very own crotch-grabbing soprano himself, Michael Jackson. Because every 16-year-old boy dreams of having a giant wicker basket of roses on his birthday cake. [shaking head] I don't know about you guys, but I'm starting to feel a whole new sympathy for MJ. I mean, who knows what kind of cake trauma was inflicted here?

So, dear readers, the next time you bring home your misspelled and/or tragically decorated Wreck, be comforted by the fact that even fame and riches would not have spared you. Cakey wreckitude truly does unite us all. :)

Thanks to Annika W., Emily R., Holly Z., Hel E. for the pics, and to the many readers who sent me the Hogan link.

I think you guys are sick for the comments that are being made attacking Bindi and her cake. Some of the comments are way more insensitive than the cake itself.

If Bindi wants a cake with her Daddy's picture on it, that's her business. Though I have really enjoyed this site, that one should not have been included in the cakes. I found it (unintentionally, I imagine) disrespectful and insensitive that it was on the list. Risking being hurtful to a child (or even an adult) who has been through a very painful loss of a loved one is not worth some laughs for those who find it funny. I lead a grief support group because I have been there, too, and it is important to be sensitive about this sort of thing. Thanks for reading this, and thanks for the generally fun site!

I know I'm "Miss Tardy-to-the-party" here, but about the MJ cake? I don't think the basket's wicker...it looks like pulled sugar - the roses too, with a bunch of precisely executed pastillage decorations, plus unbroken stringwork. Awesome skillz. More like a sweet than a wreck. The femininity angle might not even be significant - at my bakery I have male customers ask for extra flowers on their cakes all the time. One finally explained, "I don't care how it looks, I just want lots of extra frosting." BTW, whenever I'm having trouble with a cake,my mantra is: "Don't get on Cakewrecks.com,Don't get on Cakewrecks.com..."

I completely agree! What is so insensitive about it and shame on the cakewreck blogger for assuming that she knows what is better for that family and how to celebrate than they do. And you have any say in the matter because why???? It's a picture of her dad, who she loved, on her cake - I fail to miss your point entirely. I like cakewrecks but this is a total miss.

I think I'm going to cross-stitch "I fail to miss your point entirely" and hang it in my office over "I do not think it means what you think it means."

"I too find the pic of Bindi laughing with Dad's face plastered on the cake a bit disturbing, but to each their own."

How the heck is that disturbing? You act like his fricking autopsy photo is on the cake. I'm sure she ASKED for that picture of her family to be put on her cake. I could even see if she was crying in the picture, yeah that might be disturbing. But a girl is coping with the death of her father better than some adults and it's "disturbing" and "unsettling". I just don't get most people.

the really scary thing is that terri irwin probably ordered that cake herself. there's no end to the ways she can exploit her dead husband and her kids!
