What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Guest Blogging at Cupcakes Take the Cake

The lovely ladies over at Cupcakes Take the Cake are having guest bloggers ever day this month, and today my number was up, as it were. I thought it was only appropriate to educate the cupcake-loving masses over there on the many evils of the CCC. Sure, this lesson is something of a repeat for you guys, but here are 3 reasons you should check it out anyway:

1) It's mostly new material (and new Wrecks)
2) I invented some classifications for CCCs which may come in handy when you're wreckporting in the future. So now you can say, "I spied a 'Stingy Decorator CCC,'" and the rest of us will all nod knowingly at you. (Ok, well, we'll *actually* be nodding at our computer screens, but we'll be nodding at you in spirit. Close 'nuff.)
3) I'm not posting any other Wrecks today, so it's all you're gonna get.

Compelling reasons, no? :) Click here to read the article!

I left a comment for you over on the cupcake blog but I thought you should have some love of your own too. I love your blog. It is awesome and I look forward to the wrecks every day. Keep 'em coming! Whenever I am at the store near the cakes I am always on the lookout for the wrecks. Maybe someday I'll find a great one for ya!

I think Fifi and the battling balloons are my faves. Thanks, Jen!

Great post! I LOVE ABBA!!!! Have you seen Mamma Mia? The movie is good but the play is GREAT! I have seen it a dozen times. Love the Swedes!

Great job!!! I posted a comment there, too. It's just a little too pink in there, though...

well done. I have to agree that CCC's have to be some of the ugliest "cakes".

Great job, as usual, for lamenting the wrecks that are CCCs.

However, to be fair, I think you should have included the I-Phone and video-game cupcakes to show how things can be done properly. ;)

Incidentally, spouse was extremely puzzled over the Thanksgiving holiday when I was perusing the bakery at a 24-hour grocery store, hoping in vain to find a wreck. Alas, the bakery was closed for the night and perfectly bland sheet cakes awaiting an "under neat that" were all that remained in the display counter.

My sister sent me your blog e-dress yesterday. I am truly charmed. I wish your blog had been in existence 30 yrs ago when I was volunteered to order the cake for my supervisor's retirement.

As he was moving to Padre Island, TX, I asked for a sheet cake with a map of Texas decorated with oil wells, cattle, the Alamo, sailfish in the Gulf, etc. Then I innocently asked if they could put bluebells on the cake: "You know, the state flower of Texas." Sure enough, we had oil derricks, sailfish, Alamo, cows, and across one corner was written "HAPPY RETIREMENT, PHIL" and across the other -- "BLUEBELLS, THE STATE FLOWER OF TEXAS."

You were in rare form today Jen! Great guest blog - now everyone can see why we adore and worship you each day (and little do they know that you also are a Dr. Who fan, among all your other fabulousness). Wreck on!

I know it would be Internet social suicide to defend CCC in any way, but what's you opinion about the custom CCC kits where each cupcake is a specific shape and they're designed to fit together and make a shape. Here's an example http://i12.ebayimg.com/01/i/001/1f/7e/746a_1.JPG" REL="nofollow">Wreath Kit that I found on Ebay. It seems to me that, iced properly, these could qualify as non-wrecks.

OK, that last CCC? Chinese panda in an earthquake! That is my final answer! LOL!

Great article, fun new linkie for me!

Thanks!

OH wow, that is the most comprehensive information on the CCC Wreck that will ever exist...the pics were great too...my belly hurts from laughing...that Curious George CCC Wreck will NEVER fail to elicit hysterical wailing from me!!!

Great post! You know what's funny? I thought CCC stood for CupCake Catastrophes instead of CupCake Cakes!

December 5, 2008 | Unregistered Commentergfxchick

I like the way you broke it down for people. You were reaching out to people who love cupcakes and building an alliance against the evil that is CCC. I applaud your constant vigilance and hard work. Keep it up!

@gfxchick: I think either one is appropriate!

Also. "Fifi, the bobble-headed poodle torso." had me laughing until I cried.

The state flower of Texas is the Bluebonnet, not the Bluebell.

I will just say this: Thank you for picking a lovely blue color that works well with your light font color and doesn't leave my eyes screaming for mercy like that cupcake blog did. My heavens, that was painful to read! :D
