What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Calling All Wreckporters!

Greetings, Wrecks fans!

This announcement is for any and all of you who have EVER submitted a Wreck photo that you own. If you would like to have your photo considered for inclusion in Cake Wrecks, the book (yep, you read that right - amazing what people will print these days, eh?) then I need to have your photo permissions. To grant that permission is really easy: all you have to do is go here and RESUBMIT your photo. Be sure to send the largest size photo you have. And that's it!

Again, make sure you ONLY submit photos that you own all rights to: that means nothing you found on the 'net, friend's myspace pages, etc.

Stay tuned for updates as I have them, and keep sending in those Wrecks! Thanks, all!

Hey that's awesome.

Yesterday was my birthday, and my husband came home with what I guessed was a cake from Wal Mart when I saw him putting it into the fridge.

For the next 3 hours while finishing work, making dinner, etc, I daydreamed about how bad the decorating or inscription might be, and was ready to run for the camera after dinner.

Sure enough, it came out of the fridge perfectly spelled, with proportional handwriting for the inscription, evenly spaced and in a reasonable color.

Life just isn't fair.
(It was really yummy too! Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream)

Long-time lurker, first-time poster... A book!!! Congrats! Wow, that is amazing. You deserve it.

Awesome! Congratulations!

Are you publishing this yourself (through lulu or something) or is it with a publishing company?

I'm curious because I work for a pub co and am trying to convince those above me that your site would make an awesome book. I'm hoping that no one beat me to the punch!

Congratulations, Jen! That's awesome and well-deserved! I can't wait to see it.

Jo Ann,

There are several publishers bidding as we speak, so e-mail me if you'd like further details. It may be too late, though; bidding closes tomorrow afternoon.

I'll be first in line to buy it. I'll probably camp outside of Borders waiting for it with a CCC for sustenance.

First of all congratulations on your book! It must be thrilling!

Second, I was wondering if you had to get permission from the person that made the cakes, not the people that took the pictures? I would hate for you to get in trouble.

Contralulation's Jen!!! :-D I'll be sure to buy a copy!

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

How exciting! I've been hooked since my friend sent me a link to the bound-footed cake (it's a long story).

There's an award I'm passing along for your site over on my page (see below). It's not as awesome as a book deal, but it's some humble recognition :).

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Courteous Chihuahua

Hey! Congrats on the book! :)

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterthephrog

Not only a book, but a bidding war! Wow, you sure have come a long way, baby.

And we expect a fantastic cake at the launch party, btw. That is, a wrecktastic cake.

I have been laughing hysterically at the wrecks since I found the site through VSL! I now work at Johnson & Wales University (a place that may or may not turn out some wreckers ;-)) so I recommend the blog to all the Culinary and Baking & Pastry students, so they can see what NOT to do!! Congratulations on the book and I will want a autographed "under neat" copy!! Keep the comments coming!!!!!

Congrats!

I really need a wreck fix though...we haven't had one since Saturday!

December 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I am so going to buy this book. Print lots and lots...

December 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJustfrosting

I haven't submitted any cake photos (although I did make & decorate a cake for a friend recently, who put a photo of it on her blog, and which, mercifully, hasn't shown up here yet) But, I can't wait to buy the book. And I'll see the movie, too! Your blog is better than buttercream with chocolate sprinkles.

I'm so excited for my very own cake wrecks book! You make me laugh every day!

December 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

I'm so excited for you! You bring such joy to people sharing these crappy creations! Now its time to conquer all media! Congrats...you are very lucky!

Hello,

Long time lurker here. First off, congratulations! having a Cake Wrecks book will be fantastic.

Secondly, a word of caution perhaps, I've seen so many of my favourite websites lose all steam and eventually die from getting a book deal. It always seems that making a book ends up taking so much more time and effort than expected, that it becomes impossible for the authors to keep updating their sites at the same time. Please don't let this happen to Cake Wrecks, it's one of my favourite sites!

December 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You should make one of those daily calendars where each day is a new wreck picture with a hilarious caption underneath!

December 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMargeaux

I guess we miss out! My company works very slooooowly. :/

Good luck in your endeavors!

December 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJo Ann

I was hoping to be able to bring you some wrecks from Germany...but alas; there are none to be found!

I am still sad that you never posted my Hooter Birthday cake on here;) heh
