What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Wrecky Infamy is Spreading

Here's a report sent in from the front lines by brave Wreckporter Mrs. Tantrum:

"I wanted to let you know that I attempted this morning to discreetly take a photo of a spider cupcake wreck at my local [name removed to prevent possible lynching] store with my phone. Apparently the bakery manager and store manager are on to the Cake Wreck Blog, because I was shouted at by both of them "NO PHOTOGRAPHING OF THE CAKES!" I told them I was sending the photo to my husband to see if it was the one he wanted for the party today, they replied "No you aren't, you're going to send it to that cake wreck blog like everyone else."

YES!! The power! The absolute power! The universe is mine to command, to CONTROOOL!!

[picking self off floor] Whoops - sorry 'bout that, Mrs. Tantrum; just took a little power trip there.

SO... anybody else get the spider-wreck photo? :)

What an amazing story! Bravo! Maybe the pressure will help them get motivated to practice or something..

in this day and certain times, knowing I can click on the "Cake Wrecks" link in my Google Reader for an innocent laugh does so much to brighten my day.....all in good fun and definitely appreciated!

Someone needs to go buy the cake then take a picture of it! Then they can eat it and put it out of it's wrecktastic misery!

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbeloved30

This is hilarious! As has been said, if you know your cake sucks, maybe you should pull it or do something else about it! Like learn to decorate! hahaha Thanks for the laugh. Now I need to check out the cakes at all my local grocery stores!

Well if the bakers are reading this, please please please make sure they aren't wrecks. If we think they are and you insist on having them on display, it's our DUTY to report it CakeWrecks. (Jen you rawk.)

Cakewrecks is infamous! And a gold medal winner too! Congrats on the Blogger's Choice Awards!

i was in line at a store yesterday and found myself peering into the basket of the woman in front of me to see if her cake was screwed up in any manner- all the while wondering if i'd be able to get a photo of it if it sucked, which it did. alas, no photo, but it was a spacing and color choice nightmare.

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenternikki

LMAO! The manager sounds a bit like the soup natzi to me. No cupcakes for you.

I picked up a Details at LAX- a men's magazine without boobs- and even IT had a link to Cake Wrecks.

I love Aladdin...

I was at my local grocery store yesterday looking through their sample book (and thinking of this blog) when I saw a "barnyard" theme cake with several different plastic farm animals. The "noise" the farm animal makes was written in frosting beneath each one. Apparently horses say "Nay! Nay! Nay!"

...wish I'd had my camera :p

That is the path to world domination right there! :) Congrats on your regime!

I took an interesting picture of a store bakery cake....would I be allowed to email that to the owner of this site? I read the conditions and it did say it had to be paid for...but I didn't buy that cake. Thanks

Michelle

Spidercake.
Spidercake.
Does whatever a Spidercake does.
Can it swing,
On a web?
No it can't,
It's a cake.
Watch out! Here comes the Spidercake.

HAHAHAHAHA! That's awesome!

Oh man! I've been trying to take a picture of a spider cake at my local supermarket. Honestly, I keep forgetting my camera. I'll do it this weekend, promise. There are assorted colors. The hot green one is pretty sweet. I wonder if it is the same cake . . . I don't want to get yelled at. Oh well, I'll take a bullet for you.

I had a rough day at work, and this post made me howl with laughter. Feel better now! http://criticize-everything.blogspot.com/

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJoel

so... If "everyone" is taking pics of it to send it in, why doesn't Cake Wrecks have it? I call BS

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichele

If all they can make is wrecks, they should make it their specialty.

"Want your kids to REALLY appreciate the cake next year? Tired of them whining that the space trooper doesn't really look like anything?

Come buy a cake from us! You'll have no idea what the original order was, and the final piece will blow you away! Your child will never whine about future cakes again!"

It's a niche to be filled.

From the description, it sounds like a grocery store's bakery.

I don't know about you all, but more often than not, at least when I'm at the grocery store, the bakery is deserted.

Just go back after 8pm or 9pm, or around lunch time, and snap the photo when the workers are in the back or on their break or gone for the day.

If it's one of those large stores where there is way more store area than employees to cover it, you're home free. :-)

Ms. Tantrum's description is hilarious. They do need to get a clue about making crapola.

And they need to get an even bigger clue about yelling at customers. tsk tsk.

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterIDBUG

Well, ya know if they're scared of being on Cake Wrecks, maybe they should make better cakes!

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenter

you know, that info on photography is moot just based on the fact that the owner of the property asked that no photos be taken... see the second paragraph under the "General Rule" section from Krages:

Whether you need permission from property owners to take photographs while on their premises depends on the circumstances. In most places, you may reasonably assume that taking photographs is allowed and that you do not need explicit permission. However, this is a judgment call and you should
request permission when the circumstances suggest that the owner is likely to object. In any case, when a property
owner tells you not to take photographs while on the premises, you are legally obligated to honor the request.

Wrong attitude. This could be a good marketing tool for bad bakers. They could put signs up on their goodies saying "As seen on Cakewrecks." Their sales would skyrocket! I'd personally pay good money for a Naked Mohawk Baby Carrot Jockeys cake, lol.

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTeri

awesome!

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. B

This is, by far, the funniest non-photographic entry of this blog. YOU RULE :D

October 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJPM

This was a "cupcake" wreck and they have stopped making them, or at least displaying them near the coffee kisok place where they were obviously getting a little TOO much negative attention.

I do now have a personal shopper that follows me when I shop here...he is so nice too. A really BIG GUY, that is trying to be discreet, but when you ar 6'2" and weigh about 300 pounds you sort of stick out.

I will keep looking for wrecks, just obviously not at this store.

October 18, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Tantrum

Just go up to him and say very loudly (but sweetly), "I so appreciate that this store would give me my very own security guard to protect me from all the other shoppers!" Make sure there are others nearby.

There is a fine line between security and harassment.

Apparently the Bakery Manager went to the Barnum and Bailey school of market. Yep, There's a sucker born every minute!

October 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJudy

So funny! I was at the grocery store and saw a "jack-o-lantern" cake (trust me-- correct use of quotations) but I was told the same thing when I tried to take a picture of it! LOL!

October 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNedda

Pfft... That put a smile on my face~ =D

October 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

It's not fair that my grocery store doesn't have sad and hilarious cakes and such.. now i'm jealous.
: (((

i'm going to hunt all the other stores for some interesting ones
;))

this post was too hilarious

if this was not a small, privately owned bakery, then the bakery and store managers are NOT the owners, but employees, and as such don't have the legal right to make you stop. ans mrs. tantrum, having someone follow you while you shop is definitely harassment, as you have done nothing to legally merit that. i myself would be annoyed enough to bring both these issues to light of the management. (i have done so in the past when i & my family have been obviously followed in stores because we have colored hair & dress weird.)

word verification: telastab

aw that's actually quite sad... they can't help it if they are told to make really bad ideas into cakes, or are given limited colours, materials, or icing tools.
