What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Filibuster Edition

A friend once told me, "I love all your posts, but I have to admit, on Sundays you could really write anything. I'm just there for the gorgeous cakes."

Hey, works for me! So, let's see, all I need is to pull together a bunch of amazing cakes, like this:

(By BMT Cake Designs)

...and then fill up the page with whatever I want. It's a Sweets filibuster!

Does anybody have a copy of Green Eggs and Ham?
No? Ok, never mind. I'll improvise.

(By Jessicakes)

But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she.

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V ... and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

I read some 4 and 5 star reviews by those who used this device successfully to change a baby while driving. On that basis, I bought one. I put my baby on it and drove for over an hour. It did not change. Same baby. I am glad it worked for some people but I will be returning mine.

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

I hated her... SOOO... much, it - flame, flames? Flames, on the side of my face, breathing - breath, heaving breaths. Heaving breaths... Heathing...

Up up down down left right left right B A start.

(By Lovely Cakes)

"You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?"
"I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain."
"Naturally, you must expect me to attack with Capo Ferro."
"Naturally, but I find that Thibault cancels out Capo Ferro, don't you?"

(By Rosebud Cakes)

...and I believe you should put a woman on a pedestal.. high enough so you can look up her dress. And I believe in equality, equality for everyone.. no matter how stupid they are, or how much better I am than they are. And, people say I'm crazy for believing this, but I believe that robots are stealing my luggage.

A king cake is a type of cake associated in a number of countries with the festival of Epiphany at the end of the Christmas season, and in other places with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras / Carnival. The cake often has a small plastic baby (said to represent Baby Jesus) inside (or sometimes placed underneath), and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket has various privileges and obligations.

(By Party Flavors Custom Cakes, photo by Amanda McMahon Photography)

1. Take ice tray over to the sink and fill it with cold water.
2. Place the water-filled ice tray back in the freezer.
3. Shut the door to the freezer.

(By Neli Josefson)

During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!

That's it! The filibuster's over.

Thank goodness these Sweets speak for themselves.

I must be stupid, I only got one reference.

Well, someone's got to break the ice, and it might as well be me. I mean I'm used to being a hostess, it's part of my husband's work, and it's always difficult when a group of friends get together for the first time to get acquainted, and I'm perfectly prepared to start the ball rolling, I mean, I have no idea what we're doing here, or what I'm doing here, or what this place is about, but I'm determined to enjoy myself, and I'm very intrigued, and oh, my, this soup's delicious, isn't it!

And no, I did not have to look that up. :)

So much fun! Thank you.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTritchen

Mad props to using Mrs, White's hatred of Yvette from "Clue". Madeline Kahn was one of a kind....RIP

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

You are hands-down one of my very favorite people on this planet. This is a beauty of an example why. <3

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

I love you.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJRose

It is amazing to me how like-minded people find each other from so far away. The Cake Wrecks family includes Clue-, Hitchhiker's-, Nintendo-, Bernie Rhodenbarr-loving geeks like myself, and I'm so glad we met. Now back to look at the pretty cakes.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

I've missed you all. I picked a perfect day to stop by! Serious lol-ing.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

I loved the filibuster so much this week! I think it should be a semi regular feature!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristenSue

Thank you, thank you, thank you... That was awesome, on so many levels. This nerd girl who loves nerd references and beautiful cakes applauds you all! XOXOXO

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenteriammonicasue

It's not a bad thing that I read "The Princess Bride" dialogue in Inigo & Wesley's voice's is it? No? Okay, good. Glad we're on the same page!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJoanna

these cakes are inconceivable! and the quotes were very informative, as i had no idea how to make ice before i read the instructions. <3

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdawn

Oh goodness that was amazing! I was enjoying both cakes and words until I hit the komani code, then I gave up the cakes! I loved the varying types of geekery that were touched on - and even though I didn't get all of the references, I sure got a lot! You guys are the best.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMalia

Oh, and Amazon's crazy reviews are the best! Mad props for tossing that one in there =)

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMalia

The wind howled. Lightning stabbed at the earth erratically, like an inefficient assasin. Thunder rolled back and forth across the dark, rain-lashed hills.

The night was as black as the inside of a cat. It was the kind of night, you could believe, on which gods moved men as though they were pawns on the chessboard of fate. In the middle of this elemental storm a fire gleamed among the dripping furze bushes like the madness in a weasel's eye. It illuminated three hunched figures. As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice shrieked: "When shall we three meet again?"

There was a pause.

Finally another voice said, in far more ordinary tones, "Well, I can do next Tuesday."

"I'm babysitting on Tuesday. I can manage Friday..."

(And the last one is adorable, but I don't see how you'd EAT it. It looks like a Cat in the Hat dare. I much prefer the chocolate ones as potential edibles.)

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

CLUE! That is all.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

Yes! My favorite Clue quote!

The topsey turvey cake with a Ghostbusters quote...swoon....

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRavenbeth

Great filibuster. Thanks for the laugh.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterThor

warm water freezes faster. just saying. ;)

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbecky

Is it possible that these are the most gorgeous cakes you have ever displayed?!? I was drooling all over my keyboard, eyes popping, and then a pause to read and snicker, more drooling, once to read out-loud to my husband (who laughed), and on to more of the most jaw-dropping, heart-stopping, show-winning cakes I have ever seen!!!!
@lulaface- Thank you for pointing out the song lyrics! How beautiful! (I like that song, too. Timeless.)
@jen- Your blog is one of my favorites. I tell other people about it all the time!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca B

So usually I can agree with that feedback you started the post with. On weekdays it's 60% what you say and 40% the pictures- roughly, maybe your writing even more. On Sundays I read your intro stare/gawk at the pics and skim your writing, sometimes I read for clarification. But today, your writing was so distracting, I barely glanced at the pics and was more excited to see what random thing you'd say next.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Yup. Scrolled past the cakes to read.

Bravo.

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

U R hilarious. I laughed out loud on the ice instructions. :)

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

Brilliant!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVioletRose

I tried your recipe for ice cubes, but you didn't say for how long the cubes should be in the freezer. I had them in there for two minutes and they came out so watery that I'll never use your recipe again. Epic Fail.
On the plus side, these cakes were amazing!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

You crack me up!!

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca W

Cake? Or death?

February 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDeb

I had to go back through and look a second time, because I was having waaay too much fun reading the text to really look at the cakes!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterUrsula

This is my favorite Sunday Sweets to date!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristiP

~blast from the pas~

The one by "neli josefsen": I'm completely charmed by the two little mouse-critters there, climbing and cavorting on the cake as if they were at Disneyland!...and with a sleeping cat below decks, as well.
The 8th one down looks almost as if the writing could be the couples' vows...that would have been pretty darn awesome. Maybe it's a romantic poem, or a snippet of something that the couple likes a lot. Whatever it is, it's interesting and looks joyful. I never thought of cake as something that could actually look "happy", but that one does!
=^~.~^=

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I really love the cake with the beautifully dressed frog. Is that a literary reference?

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

I loved these random quotes! (And a special "Awesome!" to the frog holding the capitol cake!)
From Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to an explanation of King Cakes! Love it! I have to admit, I make a King Cake every year. Partially because I like making them and partially because the first year I did it, I found out where to buy the plastic babies from a Louisiana native (I live in Pennsylvania, where people look at you funny if you say "King Cake"), so I bought a small pack of plastic babies. "Small" meaning pack of 24! So, every year since then I've made a King Cake for Mardi Gras (at least one) because I bought the whole bag of babies...I have to keep making cakes until I run out of babies! ;)

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

Nerdgasms :) Best commentary ever!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJanie

I cannot tell a lie, I wasn't even paying attention to the cakes I just wanted to see what wacky phrase you'd use next.

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLydia

Loved the recipe for ice, it reminds me I need to print out the step by step instruction on how to replace the tp roll - no one in my house except me seems to know how. I'm afraid when the kids move out, they will have no clue how to do it. At least I can show them your ice recipe and they can have cold drinks :-)

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJillM

Loved the fillibuster! Well done, team.
And those cakes -- wowsers. That last one was the topping..... er..... um..... my favorite!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

see this is what happens...miss one Sunday Sweets and ya miss the best combination of Sweets and sassy every done! I almost forgot the look at the cakes...there were cakes there, right...? Bravo! Bravo!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

I love everyone who loves Clue.
http://buzzworthy.mtv.com//wp-content/uploads/buzz/2014/01/ms_scarlet_clue_flames_gif.gif

I need to rewatch it just for the part where Tim Curry runs down the hall with the dagger and stabs a side of meat in the kitchen

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFigmentling

Oh Jen, I adore this post!!!!Got the "Clue" references right off, along with the HHGTTG reference(having used one earlier today myself-it does help to know where one's towel is!) What beautiful cakes! What stunning commentary....as for why people keep coming to this site---IT'S TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWildDuck

Yay for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Boo for lack of Vogon poetry! :)

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

Awesome filibuster! Wait. Can they be awesome?
But c'mon, no Firefly quotes??

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Well, as usual, the words in between the cakes kept me just as entertained as the cakes themselves. Keep up the good work.

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarilee S.

so, where is this quote from:
"I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three."
I found Google to be useless, giving several different sources for it. Yet, I know I have heard it....

February 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim C

@Kim C: It's Elayne Boosler.

February 18, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Funny! I found myself reading more than looking at the cakes and then having to go back and look at the cakes! I loved this! :)
