What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Say My Name, Say My Name

At some point during a bakery phone order, you really have to ask yourself:

"Why's it taking this guy so long to write my name down, anyway?"

And for future reference, I actually prefer it "with just won 'N' in Orange."

Still, the important thing is that I know I'm your one and only.

Or...that.

Also, you should know that of all the variations my name is subjected to, the worst of them all, without a doubt, is "Iffer."

I said, "one F!!"

Jenn M., Lisa W., & Krista K.? You have been warned.

Ok. Another "Jen" (One-N-Only) weighing in here. Boy, this feels like my 10th grade english class, where a full 1/3 of the class was named Jennifer (of one variation or another). I always thought it would be fun to change the spelling to "Genyphir", just to see what people would do with that. Can just imagine the fun a wreckerator would have with that!

By the way, MY family calls me "Nif", and my youngest sister couldn't pronounce that for a while, so I became "Mif" until she could speak clearly. But PLEASE don't call me "Jenny"!

Now, of course, I'm just one half of a JenEric couple. :)

I've been a Jen. I've also been John, Jhon, Jan, Jonathan, Johnathan, Jonathon, Johnathon. I've even been "Yon" and "Yan" a couple times.

-Not really a Jen, but I feel your pain.

By the way, speaking of Jennifers and cakes (and specifically at Jasry, since I had a cousin who couldn't pronounce Jennifer either, heh), I just thought that I should mention that, courtesy of said cousin, I spent my youth (and still some family reunions) being called "Jenny Cake" (Jenny from Jennifer, of course, and my middle name being Kate, which she couldn't pronounce either).

I don't know; that just seemed somehow appropriate at the moment . . .

So....I shouldn't name my kid Genniphyrr?

Guess not, might cause some cake wreckorator to have a heart attack! LOL

As a fellow Jennifer, I have to say the worst misspelling I have ever seen is Jenipher. Who spells Jennifer with a "ph"?!?!

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer H.

Haha! I'll be posting this to my sister Jenifer (one N) - ever since my parents made the typo on her birth certificate she hasn't lived it down! Thanks for making both our days!!

I, too am a Jennifer (Two Ns, One F) or a Jen with One N!! I hate being called Jenny (bleh, ack, grrrr) or Jenny-fur (what is up with that?!)
That said, I would love to someones One-N-Only! =) ♥

ok, we're heading towards the Epcot bunker with this name issue, so I won't go there. But I do think the "cakes" themselves need addressing:

cake #1 - overly enthusiastic piping - hey, if you've got poor piping skills you might as well go big!
cake #2 - not only random capitalization ("F"), but different sizes of random capitalization (the N in JeNiFer is short while oNe-N-oNly has both short and tall capital N's)!
cake #3 - *facepalm* where do I start? did anyone else notice "Happy" is a different color pink icing than "Jenn"? and same with the blue icing? I especially love how the shapes and piping styles are different, so each "cake" has its own special je ne sais quoi (literally and figuratively)!

I am also a Jennifer. I even have one of the most common last names to go along with it - there are approximately 2,520 other people in the U.S. alone with my same name.

Clear up until high school, I was lucky enough to escape any nicknames whatsoever. Then, in my sophomore year, I was saddled with a rather unfortunate one - Jeffiner - and it stuck. 15 years later, friends and family STILL call me that. The only person who calls me anything different is my 5 year old niece. She calls me Auntie Nenner....

Just another Jen with one n only checking in!

All I can say is "I love this site!". This is great. Not only do I have to correct the spelling of my name but my husband has no middle name. It's hilarious when "none" gets filled in or "I" because he put a slash through that space. Happy Jenn to all the Birthday Iffers. (I love that my autocorrect just tried to substitute "Fifer, Infer and Offer" for Iffer;)

Seeing as my name isn't spelled the 'normal' way that it normally is, it gets misspelled a lot...I am not sure how my parents made it through all my birthdays without a wreck

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNickhole

Fellow Jennifers Unite! I go by Jenn with two N's, but my older brother calls me Jiffer. Surprised I didn't see that on a cake!

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenn-ifer

As a Jennifer this cracks me up! My family's favorite variation is Niffer, Niffie, or just plain Nif. Thanks for the giggle!

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

My fave was Yen...really...and my lil brothers couldn't say Jennifer, so they started calling me fafa...which my grandma still calls me...I loved this!!!

Want to talk about a name that gets misspelled a lot? You would think that "Lindsey" is pretty straight-forward, right? I mean, it IS phonetic after all! I've gotten just about every variation you can think of, 'a' instead of 'e', 'z' for 's', 'y' for 'i', 'ie' at the end, and it goes on and on. I actually sat down one day and tried to come up with a list of all the possible ways my name can be spelled... I got to around 30 before my brain finally exploded.

My name is Jennifer and my birthday is this month!!!

Thanks for the early "Happy Birthdays"!!

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen K.

My wife has friends from high school that still call her "Fer"...arising from her hatred of being called "Jenny" ( or worse) "Jenni" *shudder*. She actually prefers "Jennifer" or "Your Majesty".

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Cellophane

Can you imagine what would happen if they had to write out my name: it has 4 n's and 3 t's. I'd actually like to see that. Maybe I"ll order a birthday cake and see what happens!!! Today is my birthday for real!

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergabsmom

My mother was christened "Jennie" after an aunt. Not "Jennifer" or "Virginia" (the two most-common mis-namings). Just "Jennie". Oh, and she had no middle name, so wound up having to fill in forms with "NMI" (No Middle Initial), which caused its own set of problems. And her mother married a man with the same last name, so "mother's maiden name" was very confusing to people, as well.

Anyway, one of the family decided to name a daughter after Mom. The child was christened "Ginny". When we gasped and asked why she misspelled "Jennie", the new mom insisted, "Well, that's the way *I* pronounce it, so it's right!!"

*facepalm*

HAH! One of my cousins used to call me "Niffer", which I hated... but "Iffer" would definitely have been worse!

I like the Mike Doughty song "27 Jennifers"... which I first heard on the radio at work when sharing an office with a Jennifer.

If there's still room in the Epcot bunker, I didn't see either Jeffy or Fir (Firbie) anywhere on this list, and I've known one of each.

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermissed 2

I've always wanted to spell my name Goenyphur.

But I figured no one would know how to pronounce it.

Or spell it.

Or understand it.

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNurseJen

I love the iffer cake. It looks to me like children made the cake. You know how children are. If you don't, ask a teacher to grades some papers. They will be writting a paper and get to the end of a sentence and devide a word anywhere. That is what looks like happened with this cake, but no matter what happened with it, it is freaking hilarious.

The other cakes, wow, I guess they were just having one of those days. Probably day dreaming while they were doing their work or discussing with their co-workers what they were going to do when they got home that evening. Or perhaps they didn't get any sleep the night before. lol

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerrie

My name's Letitia. I can TOTALLY relate.

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLetitia

I'm a Jenn with 2 n's and say it like that all the time. Would love a cake like the first one. Lol

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenn Noble

I have to point out that the name on the first cake is actually spelled correctly, according to the rule on the cake (if "too" means "two," that is). When "Jenn" is written in blue, it has two "n"s, but when it is in red, it's "Jen" with one "n."

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGary

These are great. Being an Erica I am constantly asked "with a CK?" No, just a C thanks. I actually have a Christmas stocking with "Erika". My mom still hangs it as it has now become the holiday joke. I'm a grown woman and I still have a misspelled stocking. :)

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I think I have been lucky so far. No one has cake wrecked my name as of yet but it could still happen seeing as there are several ways people spell it lol. Man I don't care as long as it isn't an angel food cake that they give me. Ah the ways wreckerators just have to wreck cake. How I love them :D.

March 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

You know what's fun? Being a Jennie and always having people helpfully correct your name to Jennifer.

March 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennie T

I truly sympathize. I was born in 1970 and almost named Jennifer. (Thank you Aunt Sarah!) My dad has 5 sisters and my mom has 2 sisters and 9 nieces older than me so my parents decided that using any family name could lead to trouble! Since Aunt Sarah had been kind enough to name her fourth daughter Jennifer, no Jennifer for me! I love all of the Jennifers in my life, but am of the opinion that the last thing 1970 needed was one more Jennifer! Certainly none of my classes in school needed one- we already had Jen, Jenny and Jennifer S and Jennifer T. So what did I get? Rikki. I'm a girl. So I always get "What is that short for?" "What is you real name?" "Are you named after your dad?" His name is Richard, so while that is possible, no, I'm not. My mom had a friend in school named Rikki and just liked the name. Now being a girl named Rikki does have some shortcomings, for example the repeated subscription offers from "Boys Life" magazine, and receiving a notice that I needed to sign up for the Selective Service when I was about 17. And my name never gets spelled right. Ricky (That's how boys spell it!) Riki, Ricki, Rickie, and the list goes on. I'm guessing no matter how simple your name seems, someone will mess it up.

March 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

Wow, Jen, I also prefer one N in “Orange.”

@ zoomom I think I dated the Iffer/Effer once. Bad hygiene and poorly trimmed toenails.

I answered the phone at work today (I have to go by “Barbara” there) and the caller responded, “yes, Margaret, I need…” What The Frosting??

@Erin- you win!! :D (thanks for the ear worm)

Great post! I've been "Nifer" as long as I can remember. When people call me Jenny or Jennyfer, I absolutely want to stab them. :)
