Sunday Sweets: Game On
November 13, 2011 Thanksgiving is coming up (for us Americans, anyway), which means a lot of us are about to spend a lot of time with our families. When my family gets together we like to cook, eat, laugh, eat, and play a whole lot of board games. Then we eat again.
So, in the spirit of two of our favorite activities, let's get our game on!
Scrabble ALWAYS makes its way to our coffee table during the holidays:

And it stays on the table for days because we all take hour-long turns. I'm serious. One Christmas, I played a game of Scrabble with my aunt that lasted two and a half days. (And I totally won.)

I love how the tiers and floating pieces add dimension to a traditionally flat board game. Very cool!
My aunt and uncle just informed me that Settlers of Catan will be a big part of Thanksgiving this year. So I guess I should figure out what that is.

Chinese Checkers is kinda like that game at Cracker Barrel where you have to jump the pegs, right? Except it's much harder and doesn't come with dumplings?

Those cakes bring back lots of memories---Chinese checkers with my brothers (I like the Cracker Barrel comment...), my mother's mah jongg games, Cootie, and endless games of Monopoly. Sorry was also a favorite game of ours. That first Scrabble cake is amazing! Thank you for the day brightener! I hope your next tour will include Minneapolis or St. Paul, Minnesota.

I just got introduced to Catan last year and I L-O-V-E it! I think you'll really get into it. Also, I'm totally in love with the Monopoly one with the couples' life. So personal!
Ooh, you're going to love Settlers of Catan! After playing that game all weekend one summer, I couldn't stop thinking about trading sheep... it's great :D

OMG I absolutely LOVE the Catan Cookies. Catan is probably one of my favourite board games, though I have yet to win at it >C!

I have never played Settlers of Catan, either. And am I the only nosy voyeur who wishes I could zoom in and turn that Monopoly of Life cake so I can read all the squares?
The chess cake made me think not only of Star Trek, but of The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon's invention of three-person chess.
Cataan is the best board game ever!!! You must play it as soon as possible. I can't believe someone made cookies to look like the board -- I'm totally geeking out right now.
You totally have to play Settlers of Catan! My friends have been playing for years and we have all the private jokes that make people look at us strangely. Like every time you get "brick" you have to sing "She's a brick...howss!" And when you build a city you have to sing "We built this city on ore and wheat!" Then there is the ever popular, when you have "wood" and need "sheep" you have to say, "I have wood for sheep."
Trust me it's funny when you've been playing it for three hours.
My brother is mildly obsessed with Catan. As far as board games go I'm a D&D player myself, if that even counts as a board game.

But the Hungry Hippos cake is all wrong. The heads shouldn't be on the same colored bodies. Well, that's how *I* played it anyway. Always took those things apart. :D
Catan is great! You'll love it. We've been playing for a few years...there are so many expansions - it never gets old!
These cakes are very inspiring. I've been a die-hard board gamer for several years now, and while I don't usually play these particular games anymore, they are quite interesting to look at.
But I can't be the only one to notice that the Catan cake has one too many brick tiles, and one too few wood tiles.
I know how to play mahjong. I learned from the masters (madams actually)... my two grandmas!
All of these are very cool, but I have to ask - why there a bottle of nail polish, a nail file and fake nails on the monopoly box cake????
The settlers cookie cake is the best.
Truly wonderful cakes...but I just gotta know if the Scrabble tiles are the actual ones, done with photo images, or unbelievably perfectly piped and cut.
