What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Ch...Ch...Ch...Changes

Hey all,

For the past 16 months or so, Jen has made it her goal in life to post here every single day. And for the most part, she's succeeded.

On vacation? The post goes up.
Christmas day? The post goes up.
Husband dying in the hospital? The post goes up.

The hardest part about this is that she has to be funny, or at least try to be, with every post. This is, well, starting to take its toll. ("No, really, Sweetie, that tic is barely noticeable.") Cake Wrecks was built on funny, but when daily deadlines take precedence, the funny can suffer - and that's not good for anyone.

So starting today, we're gonna be cutting back on Saturday posts, since it's our slowest day. We'll still do our best to post every other day of the week, but if we do miss one from time to time, just know it's in the best interests of Jen's sanity, the quality of the posts, and Cake Wrecks as a whole.

Thanks for understanding, guys. Here's to much, much more facial-tic-free Wreckage and laughter.

Wreck On!

Out of curiosity, how much time does it take to create a post, including research, wading through our billions of submissions, and comments? You guys are awesome to do it all! I was actually really surprised that you posted every day when I first started reading, and I definitely think you deserve a day to yourselves.

We need Jen to stay sane. So enjoy your Saturdays off and have some fun!

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJynxie

Hell, take Wednesdays, too. No one buys anything on Wednesdays. You gus are great! How about periodic classic posts?

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterwoolywoman

Awww Jen! :( I'd rather read you just a couple of days each week than have you get burn out and need to quit altogether. Take a break whenever you need it!

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStamp4hobby

Thank you for taking good care of yourselves!

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlisonH

know when to say when! Friends don't let friends tic and wreck! Seriously...good for you to take care of yourself. You both certainly deserve some down time.
Thanks for keeping us in frosting!

Good for you!
And thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do!

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered Commentercrelly

I doubt anyone's going to riot over losing one day, and if it means that CW stays funny, then I, for one, won't have a problem with it all.

Thanks for staying sane!

I think it'll be good for the blog to post because you WANT to post, and not because you should. It'll stay fresher that way (and so will you - especially with extra time for extra showers).

Thanks you two!

You deserve a break, Jen! I'd come here even if you only posted once a week. <3 We all enjoy your posts. Thanks for all your hard work!

January 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Enjoy your Sabbath rest. <3

Take a day off... have a party... sleep.... rest. Absolutely... and we'll be here... waiting... no presure, of course :).

Rest.

For goodness' sake take a break! Your site is fantastic but not worth your peace of mind.

January 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

You are absolutely the best blogger on the entire web! The public demands cakewrecks, but I'd never begrudge you the need to do whatever is necessary for your wellbeing. I really am happy for you in taking this step for yourself and your family.

Take your time, we'll be here. :)

You shouldn't force yourselves to submit everyday, make it more fun for you and not seem like a chore.
Can't force the funny.
Take all the time you want/need!

No more facial tics and twitches...

You guys deliver the goods with every post! I've gotten so many laughs from both of you. You've earned as many days off during the week as you need.

Love you both! Love your show!
:-P

You definitely deserve a day off!!

January 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKittyMama

I don't usually read Saturday's post until I get back to work on Monday, anyway. : )

I hear ya', sister. As a writer (and little fish in this big pond), trying to keep attractive, clever content on one's site can wear you down. I recommend a month spent with the latest Legend of Zelda game on your Nintendo DS. You'll need a chiropractor after staring at that little screen all day, but it'll be worth it. And watch out, the little booger loves to leap into the lakes of fire.

No time to read all 370 other posts, but since I historically have laughed so much I've done things like spit food at the monitor, had a soda-nose incident (I think this had to do with the Lenin cake), etc., I'm all for quality over quanity. Release the tics back to the woods where they belong! :-D

Jen -

I love reading Cake Wrecks no matter what, and with how much you've done in the last year, you deserve to take a break when you need to. Enjoy yourself and I look forward to future posts!

My boyfriend and I carpool to work everyday and the first thing said at the beginning of the car ride home is often "Did you see CakeWrecks today?!?". So take (an occasional) Sunday off too!

You have what, a million readers? And yet each one of us feels like we're in a tiny little circle of coolness/geekiness when we read your posts. You guys work so hard to entertain us and make us feel special and listened to, you deserve a day off!

January 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLesa Pinker

EVERYONE should have a day off!!! :D Don't know how you've done it, honestly - kept the funny, and posted every day? Color me impressed - I'm SUCH a slacker blogger....

January 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDea

Hey Jen & John - I agree that everyone needs some time off. You deserve it!! But, as my grandma used to say, many hand make light work. So why not spread the "work" around?

I had a thought on how to give Jen a break while keeping the wreckage going non-stop plus adding a new twist to your marvelous blog. Maybe you could post a picture of a particularly troublesome wreck on Saturdays and then let your loyal readers/fans take a shot at being 'Jen-for-a-day.' While Jen's snarky shoes would be tough to fill, her devoted fans would surely have fun trying.

At any rate, we are all very appreciative of your hard work and dedication to serving us up with our daily dose of hardy-har-har. Wreck on!

Really if I was Jen I would have thrown my computer out the window, torn my hair out, and try to curse all my followers.

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I give that a thumbs up. Thanks for the great work, guys!

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMoriah

I would've done this a long, long time ago. You guys are over achievers, but we love you. Cutting back is better than cutting off.

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTina and Jason

Good for you! Every person needs a day off.

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I am new to your blog by a couple of months, and I found it at a time when I needed a great distraction that could make me laugh. I have loved every post since and have often wondered how you do it every day. I'm lucky if I get my kids fed every day!!! There is no way in H-E-double-hockey-sticks that I could make a post to my blog that often!

Take a break... take a few breaks...stay fresh and don't worry, your fans will remain true... and we definitely don't want Keyboard Cat to ever play you off!!!

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNicki

How dare you not schedule your lives around my desires! Frankly, I'm insulted, and I demand an apology.

Enjoy the freedom! :)

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNick

Perfectly understandable! You do an awesome job Jen!and do not worry about losing any of your followers and fans of this wonderful blog... We'll always be here! You took the right decision! Enjoy your days and your wonderful hubby!

January 5, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCoffee Lovers

Love your posts SO much... but take as much time as you need! Even if you end up posting every other day, that's totally ok. Everyone needs a mental health day every now and then!

January 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Jen and John,

By all means take a day off....but have you considered inviting a regular poster on as a "guest wrecker" on every Saturday? There are some great regular posters who would do a wonderful job and they could even submit it a couple of weeks in advance?

Just a thought. YOu do deserve a day off though. Enjoy your Saturday!

January 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue

Thanks for letting us know! Enjoy your day off!

January 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You definitely deserve time off!

But do you do the "schedule" function on the blog where you can put a lot of posts in and schedule them to come out at a certain time every day? I do this when I'm on vacation so no one knows I'm on vacation (oh yeah, I'm that cool)

January 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKate

"john (the hubby of Jen)"

You're dying in the hospital? What cakes were brought?

And some web publishing software allows a publishing date to be defined. If this is available for your site, it would let you create several postings when the muse hits you. Or if you take the path of "Archive diving on weekends", you can browse the archives anytime and schedule copies of items to appear then.

Thank you for this website and all your hard working in making us laugh everyday. My 13 yr. old DD and I have bonded over it, we laugh togeather so much that my DH can tell when we are checking out the site. In fact my DD gave your book to all her friends for Christmas. Enjoy your day off and know we very much appreciate the laughter you bring to our home.

January 7, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteritsv

I always wondered how you can stay so funny in EVERY post! Take more than one day off! You two are awesome.

January 7, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterheatherj

Oh, please, please take days off. I love reading your work, Jen, but the wrecky goodness is not worth your sanity nor your health. :D I'll still check back faithfully as always!

...dying?

January 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTiger

Personally, I've never understood how Jen has ever managed to post EVERY SINGLE DAY. It's extraordinary. I certainly couldn't keep it up. No one could, unless they were some sort of super-woman.
Wait a minute... Jen, that's your secret, isn't it?

January 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRaeRae

Good man. No kidding.

And as a new fan I'd say take it easy for sure. Heck, go every couple of weeks even. It'll keep everyone guessing and since I work from home anyway I have plenty of time to wait.

I hope that everything is well for you on your end.

Cheers,
Jason
