Easter Sunday Sweets
April 12, 2009 Hey all! John (the hubby of Jen) here. So my dear and wonderful wife, knowing how I get all weepy when I see kittens and bunnies and tribbles and the like, has asked me to take care of this week's Sunday Sweets. I'd like to think this is due to my incredible wit and charm, but it's probably more because she has to write a bazillion posts in the next two days. So, with no further ado, I give you: Easter Sweets!
This first one may be the most adorable bunny I have ever seen. Reminds me of those "Dunny" dolls Jen likes:

Next we have some fluffy bunny 'tocks. Jen thought the bottom texture looked a little like floral foam, but I think it's funky-cool.

*ahem* As I was saying, Jen doesn't usually dig the lamb cakes - especially the smoking kind - but this one earned her seal of approval:

From the embossed pattern in the chocolate fondant to the sweet little chick on the top, this is one gorgeous cake. I've kneaded and rolled my fair share of fondant, so I can tell you that that egg was not easy. (If I had done it, there would be a big jagged seam up the back and pleats all over the place.) Also, Jen says the colors are "faboo", which I think means "cool."
And finally, here's a cake that both Jen and I looked at for a moment and said, "Wow, it's beautiful - but what is it?"
(Also submitted by a ton of you, and made by the one and only Highland Bakery.)After a few moments we figured out that it's an Easter bonnet with a bunny cameo on it. (It's probably hard to tell because the edges are slightly cropped.) The skill shown in that ribbon and feathers is super impressive.

Jess, the "quarter sheep" = "quarter sheet"... as in quarter sheet cake. :) Took me a minute or two to get it, don't feel badly.

Hi Guys, I'm really hoping you read this because when I was surfing the interweb today I found something frustrating... I don't know if you guys are familiar with the website www.oddee.com but they have a VERY naughty habit of ripping other people off...So far I've counted about three of my favourite websites who's articles have appeared on there. Now I could just be a twit and you could have given them permission so I'll just cut to the chase. Today there was a new post titled "Horrible Cakes" or something like that and the tag line was, get this, "when proffesional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong." Sound familiar? Yeah, I thought so to. So I'm not sure if you are aware or not but if you're not, I suggest you head on over there to give them a royal reaming out for being unoriginal douche wads! You guys are numero uno! Keep up the hilarity, Your watchdog and Observer.

Wonderful fill in job! Yay for replacements. Not that we dont love our Jen but hey everyone needs a break.
I think on the chocolate one that is "fabu" the egg on top is not fondant but probably molded chocolate. I could be wrong but that is a guess from someone who works with a lot of chocolate. The texture and sheen is way different from the bottom "cake part. It takes nothing away from the decorator if it is chocolate because it is perfectly done and it all takes talent!

omg, highland bakery! I used to go there for brunch when I dated a guy who lived in ATL. My affection for him didn't last, but I have never forgotten HB's eggs benedict and skillet potatoes. I pine for them. It makes me sad I never tried their cakes!
OMG - bunny-tocks is now my new favorite word.
The sheep cake totally reminds me of a silly old Windows screensaver app with sheep walking around. You could pick them up and drop them, and when they landed they looked JUST like the sheep on that cake. Flat and slightly bewildered by what just happened.

The lamb cakes (not the smokin kind) seem to be a Czech tradition - I was looking up a rabbit recipe (yes I ate rabbit on Sunday) and, lo and behold, saw a rather beautiful lamb cake. The caption made it sound that those who couldn't get lamb made a lamb cake.
These are all great but the lavender bunny looks dead. Just sayin'.

These are lovely. Really amazing pieces of (yummy yummy) art.
But as with so much this time of year I'm a little disappointed that none of the Easter cakes have any passing reference to Christ's resurrection (you know, that pesky church bit that clutters up the morning before all the chocolate and bunnies and such).
My son's baptism was a few weeks ago and I thought "oh, at least decorations will be easy. I'll find some pastel crosses and flowers or other spring-y colored religious stuff". No dice. None. Target, WalMart, Michaels, Kmart...not one hint of religious theme in their aisles and aisles of "Easter" decorations. Bah! It's as ridiculous as Christmas now!
So I guess I was hoping for at least one beautifully done cake with a cross and draping stole; or a cave and rolled back boulder. Something. Anything. Nope.
The Easter bonnet blew my mind! The details are incredible- the feather looks real, the ribbon looks like cloth, and the brooch is so pretty!
The first one is so quirky, I would love to see a variation of this whimsical cake for a wedding.

As usual, the Sunday Sweets are gorgeous. If the chocolate egg cake is indeed made of chocolate instead of fondant, then that is an even bigger bonus. (Total chocolate fiend!!) Chocolate is NEVER too pretty to eat for me!
When I was a teen (so long ago!!) I made up the name "Undulating Blubber Monkeys" for a band name...too bad I can't play any instruments and am totally tone deaf. Oh well, I still like my name!!

I guessed "Easter bonnet with a white chocolate cameo" before reading below the picture. I had a wicked flash back of white chocolate cameo's. I don't think I've seen one in about 35 years. Does anyone else remember them?
They are all gorgeous ... my favorites are the little bunny butt sticking out of the tree stump and the bonnet. But most of them use this new flattened icing that they lay over the cake like cloth. My daughter had her wedding cake made like that and I don't care for the taste or consistency in my mouth. Looks good but, to me anyway, cake's for eatin'!

I might be off on one, but the 'Easter Bonnet' looks oddly like the Prince of Wales insignia to me, only for some reason with a helm instead of a coronet. :/

These are all fantastic cakes, but I couldn't help giggling when I saw the phrase "Dunny bunny" - Here in Australia, "dunny" = "outhouse", ie, a makeshift outdoor pit toilet, usually surrounded by flies...
