Random True Fact: If you ask John what his favorite creature is, he will say it's the butterfly. Years ago we heard a talk on all the impossible things a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly, and John was so fascinated that he went off and read and watched and researched and I guess just fell in love with these fluttery wisps of lunacy.

These cakes are GORGEOUS! The butterflies on the first one look like silk; how were they made?
The multi-colored butterflies are beautiful, and the textures on the cake behind the purple butterflies are, as well.
Also, I love butterflies, as well. I don't know who said it first, but one of my favorite mottos that encourages me when I need it is, "Just when the caterpillar thought the world had ended, it became a butterfly."

What a breathtakingly cheery Sunday Sweets to open on this dreary, gray, humid Sunday! So much wonderous color!! Did you see the wee spiderwebs on the stunning "needlepoint" cake??!! And I'm swooning over the rainbow loopies, oh my! Thank you, Jen and John, for such an uplifting flutterby-filled post!
Strangely, or maybe not so much, the butterfly cakes turn my stomach. Something about a slice of cake with insect abdomen!

There are probably many butterfly places in Florida, in addition to the one Kathryn mentioned above. We went to the one in Branson several years ago and the Blue Morphos are beautiful, as are all the butterflies! ("All the "Butterflies" would also make a good band name.)

And then, who thought I would be impressed by a 3D cake appearing like it's a 2D cake? Not me.
@ Jen, I love Monarchs as well. We used to have a midwestern prairie at the end of our block in south suburban Chicago, so we got tons of Monarchs. When I was little, I must confess to catching a couple, putting them in a large glass jar with holes in the lid and some twigs to stand on. Then I borrowed my brother's glass rod (from chemistry set) and fed them sugar water. I loved watching them eat. I'd like to think that I let them out after a while ... but I don't remember. Probably better that way :-( .
Another Monarch fan! I raised them in glass jars as a kid, and watched them grow into butterflies (I let them go once their wings dried). Still do, occasionally. They are gorgeous in every stage of their life cycle.
Oh, and not to be a downer, but Monarchs are actually endangered. Their populations have dropped dramatically in the last decade because milkweed, the only plant the caterpillars can eat, is getting wiped out. There's a number of organizations working to save them, including www.saveourmonarchs.org and www.worldwildlife.org.
The one that looks like embroidery is so pretty. I love that little spider web!
There is a beach in Santa Cruz, CA (about 45 mins from where we live) where the monarchs over-winter. You'll see giant clusters of them hanging from the eucalyptus branches in the grove. They're really quite amazing. If you find yourself in the Bay Area between November and February, I highly recommend it. Down image search for "Natural Bridges Monarch Grove" and that should give you some idea of what you'll see. They are amazing creatures, for sure!
I know this is older - but I can't post on Epbot and I just want to say how excited I was seeing Cinderella's pink dress. I always had a soft spot for her handmade dress (or her mother's dress with Cinderella's alteration designs carried out by critters!). I would LOVE to do that as a cosplay. Maybe even do the tattered version after the "steps" get ahold of it.
