What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Less-Than-Superb Owl Wreckage

My Superb Owl Sweets for Super Bowl Sunday must have been super inspirational, because look what Ashley ordered for her daughter's birthday!

D'awww.

Ashley ordered it from a different baker, though, which meant there were bound to be just a few slight differences.

[poker face]

[eye twitch]

[biting lip]
Er...

Quick, look at the cake. Look at the cake!

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAA!!

Whooo WEEE! Almost didn't make it, there.

Thanks to Ashley G. for reminding us that wreckage can be a real hoot.

Is that...manbearpig?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAngelaS

Oh, I just had to go see if I could find CorrieCakes on Cake Central (Corrie76). She has SO many beautiful sheet cakes. I love the idea of a pretty cake that I actually know how to slice without a diagram or a cakey massacre!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMindaMinda

I have no words.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

The writing on Lanie's bat cake is upside-down. So is the photo.
So, it was a "birthday?" Was it Lanie's zeroth birthday, or did that message not fare any better than the owl?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterR3test

Dear Wreckerator: owl =/= bat. Learn the difference. Please, for the love of God, learn the difference!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRoxy Random

Owls, bats, same thing, right?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

I really, really, REALLY hope she did not pay for that wreck....

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

If the bat on her cake is any indication, baby Laynie must belong to a family of vampires.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Wow. That is awful. My condolences, Ashley. Please know that is wasn't in any way your fault. That cake was dead before it was boxed. (Love the name Laynie. Or was it supposed to Lalani or Laramie and the baker did...well, you know what the baker is capable of)

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenters.marie

I was coming to comment about the resemblance to a bat as well. Then, I read @AngelaS.'s comment and laughed out loud. Also, love the shaky part of each first letter. It adds to the spooky bat/manbearpig effect. Why on EARTH did the wreckerator choose that shade of grey?!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

After following this blog for so many years, I should know better than to try to drink coffee and read the blog. Auck! At least I saved the monitor and got coffee all over my tee shirt.

AUCK. I agree with the posters - manbear/manbat ? What IS that figure anyways? And WHAT was this wreckorator thinking offering up this cake as a "duplicate" for the sweet owl cake ? STOP drinking that Kool Aid,dang it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROTFLMAO, as always! Thanks Jen.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMaryO1230

Thought it looked more like a lemur than a bat...those large eyes...only..it has 3 wings??? Or maybe it's a striped lemur? I really don't know!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVaBeach alemaP

Bat? I was thinking Lemur. Definitely not an owl, anyway.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterWill

It reminds me of a child's marker drawing. A child who can spell and not reverse letters, but a child nonetheless.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

It's a bushbaby. Clearly the baker was like owls are so passe, I'm going to do a cake with a bushbaby on it.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterteri

Wow, looks *just* like the picture
...amazing

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKW

Well, there is sort of pink icing and something like a tree branch. You have to give the wrecker some credit for his/her copy "skills." I just had to add air quotes there, did you catch that?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAdo_Annie

It sort of looks like a pink and grey panda...

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRKA

SWEEET LORD! My monitor is full of coffee! I swear it was an honest reaction..... must taste like nightmares do

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterZidely

What do these folks do when they order cakes that come out so poorly? Do they get refunds? Take the cakes and log complains?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPam

I think the baker must have been really busy and let my 6 year old son decorate that cake.

I really don't understand how some decorators can be called "professional" when they produce cakes like these...

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHeatherV

The lady that made that nice cake Corrie Rasmussen has a Craftsy class showing you how to make her
beauiful cakes. Maybe next time, just purchase her class instead of ordering a cake from another baker 😋

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBetsy

THAT is a hipster/furry bat chick wearing its favorite "Hot Pink Animal Novelty Hat Cosplay Beanie With Paws Gloves." Hat comes with "Matching Sweats Loungers Black With "BATZ" Pink On Butt." And no one should mock someone's personal style. HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING FROM EPBOT.COM?!?!?!?!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

I see a pink meerkat being attacked by giant leeches.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterWorrierPrincess

Oh yeah, I can see the lemur now too.

None of us have yet addressed the weird extra ribbon of grey frosting on the top portion of the cake. Why? Just...why?!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

That's what happens when you stop in bat country.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSkatie

no no not Manbearpig, Puppymonkeybaby.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBreanna

I'm pretty sure it's puppy -monkey -baby

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKorrie

I just wanted to say how super stoked I was to see someone else with my name spelled the same way!!

That wreck looks like an interpretation of the phrase "when pigs fly"!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGirlNamedCorrie

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm pretty sure it wants to devour a dead carcass. I think it's mostly the branch that gives off that vibe.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Not that baby bats aren't super cute, but WHY would you want one on a cake???

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Paper

Bwah hee hee hee hee @Susan!!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Don't get me wrong, I love Cake Wrecks. However, when you see a really amazing cake A) order it from the original baker or b) sigh and order a standard sheet cake from someone else.

This cake looks like something my kids would have done for Mother's Day, definitely NOT a real baker?!

If I'm spending more than $30 on a cake, I most definitely want to see the baker's look book and possibly read a couple good Yelp reviews? I'm not trying to put Wrecks out of business but if it's important, double check the baker.

This is god awful, it looks like a 3 winged bat

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterpastry impaired chef

Love the Anastasia reference!

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

As for the gray, you mean I can't get alternating pink, olive green, blue, and brown stripes by putting all four colors in my piping bag together?

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterStephanieJ

I'm thinking it's either a pigbat or a pigpenguin. I do know it is NOT an owl. :(

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterK Michelle

That cake is driving me quite batty. :-D Sorry, couldn't help it.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

Oooh! A panda-lemur-penguin. Those are VERY hard to draw, especially in icing. This baker nailed it, though.

February 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMSTeacher3K

Hmm owls and bats must be the same to the wreckerator. Shoot just add in a tree that looks like a snake and then you are all set lol. I swear I would try not to laugh if I saw this cake in a display.

February 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

That looks like a pink bat!
I love CorrieCakes. But I don't see her work anymore... Anybody know why...

February 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMekalA

Finally! A concrete image for "bat-s*** crazy"!

February 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

"Cambree" Camembert + Brie. Very French
