What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Friday Favs 4/17/15

Some of my favorite new submissions this week.

Further proof that talent and common sense aren't always a package deal:

Now if only it said "CREST HERE" on the left.

John's taken over e-mail submission duties here at CW, and speaking of "duties..."
... yesterday he named this file, "pretty much just poop.jpg"

NAILED IT.

("Cake Wrecks: Keeping It Prefessional Since 2008")

I'm sorry, everyone; I know poop jokes are classless and in poor taste.

So here, have an Awkward Ninja Turtle Erection:

BOOYAKASHA!

(I'm not sure who looks more horrified: me or him.)

One of my Grammar Police friends recently posted a Facebook mini-rant about the word "alright" - which I, personally, have no problem with.*

[*Yeah, I said it. COME AT ME, BRO.]

The very next day was my friend's birthday, so I found her the perfect cake from our archives:

It went over so well, I think everyone should do this for their grammar-loving friends!

I also recommend writing something like, "Its you're birthday! Irregardless, do'nt loose ur kool, Ok?"

And finally, for you bakers out there: this is why you should be careful what you post on Facebook:

Ouch.

Thanks to Regina F., Doug M., Sharlyn W., Andrea C., & Anony M., who all know Facebook is really only good for thought-provoking political discussions.

My brain hurts so bad after reading that birthday greeting.

I KNEW irregardless was a word. Can't wait to show my wife and prove how unright she was!

I'm so glad the wreckor just printed out the crest on a sheet of copier paper and laid it on the cake instead of edible paper or actually trying to recreate it. Although, in fairness, aside from the paper and the placement directions, the font is pretty and the rest of the cake looks appetizing....

Ninja Turtle CCC (ptooie!) I suppose boys will be boys.... :/

And, the "bunny" cakes...I don't see bunnies, I see box-shaped messes. No ears, even. I have zero creative ability, yet I think I could accomplish better than that! Makes you kind of wonder who bought them and why...

That last cake looks more like a Guinea Pig than a Rabbit!

Anyone else notice that of the 5 commenters on the Facebook bunny mess, 3 are named Kimberly?

Hahaha

Every time I think it can't get any worse, you pull it out of the bag. Well played, lady, well played.

The bunny cakes look like frosted turkeys to me!

You have to be careful with copyright laws, when I started cakes back in the early 80's copy cake had big bird, superman and mickey mouse to draw on cakes. When I came back to decorating in the 90's everything changed. Now the place i worked at uses Fodant dots and bows, non eatable sprays, they take creativity and throw it out for fast plop it on and get it out there. Anyone can be a decorator now, pre iced cakes, Fondant makes crappy cakes. I want a decorated cake not a production line cake.

Just poop? No, John (thoj), it is a specimen of a rare species: a poop snake.

1: Nice font and beautiful decorating, along with excellent spelling... still a cake wreck. Wreckerators, do you even LISTEN?

2: You notice it's "Reduced for quick sale"? They want that out as quickly as they can get it sold!

3: It should be purple, and next to it, in the display, should be a cake with April.

4: "Alright" is a word. It has a separate meaning from "all right". Unfortunately, many grammar police don't know that information, as they view English as a solid language. It is, however, a fluid language. Which is why we no longer address people as Thee and Thou.
“The figures are all right.” When you use “all right” as two words, the sentence means “the figures are all accurate.” When you write “The figures are alright,” with “alright” as one word, this source explains that the sentence means “the figures are satisfactory.”
There's you a rant to reply to your local grammar police on their tirade. Or the cake.

5: No. Words.

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMommy25Melody

Yeah, sure there are only 3 *left*. We all know they only made 3 and none sold.

I don't know why, but my favorite part is, "we are open till 2ish". Teehee.

Despite the mistakes on the first cake, that lettering is gorgeous....they did a lovely job with it.

Why don't the bunnies have ears?

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRuthie

A friend of mine bought a cake similar to the bunny's only it had chocolate mice running over the cakes. It was a warm day. She put the cake in her truck. I wished I'd had my camera because the mice looked like, well, you know!

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBarb

Who ate the ears?!? What happened to the bunnies' ears??? (And faces, and forefeet, and . . .)

After all, the ears are the best part, at least with chocolate rabbits.

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTXRed

Arghh!! The bunnies!! The bunnies!! Can't escape the bunnies! (I knew there were good reasons I'm not on FB.)

#2 (pardon the pun) looks like what my husband calls " the poop du jour" when he cleans the litter box!

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersweeteysmom

The "we have 3 left" cake so closely reminds me of a local bakery...not only because that was their caliber of work. And because they were so unabashedly proud of it that they routinely and boldly proclaim how many of something they have left and could sell. I have taken to calling them "The fakery."

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterdeltafoxtrot

Poo-fessional?

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBriana

Just so you know, the bunny ears are probably paper/cardboard with or without a plastic finish. They don't put them on the bunnies for 2 reasons: 1. If they are on too long, they get greasy looking from the icing. 2. They make the cakes too tall for the cheap packaging!
I worked at a bakery over 40 years ago and they did this back then. LOL

PS, speaking of grammar (hee hee), it's FAVES (prounounced "fayvz"; favs = "fahvz")

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Ooh, what I've always wanted, a creamy turd cake!

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterGary

The turtle cake is going to haunt my nightmares. For other internet-related reasons I have been linked in the past to video of actual turtle-junk. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T SEEK IT OUT! Turtle-junk is TERRIFYING!

April 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAmaya

Well ... the fondant on the alright cake is smooth. That and the script on cake No. 1 are the positives today. The rest, not so much.

April 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNobodee Home

Those are bunnies? I am sorry lol but they don't come even close to a bunny. Ah well. That poop snake cake.. oh man once seen cannot unsee.. help lol.

April 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

@Pamtha: I'm not sure I understand the significance of that, other than that they had unoriginal parents.

The bunnies DO have ears, sorta--they're just really raggedy. Zoom in on the picture & see!

And I'm not even going to dignify the assertion that "alright" is all right with a response. I could, but I'm not going to.

People show emotional and behavioural tendencies based on similarity, that is, a tendency to treat something they KNOW is an image, replica, or representation of a thing, as if it were the actual thing itself. In one experiment on the emotion of disgust, the first two tasks involved delicious fudge shaped like dog poo, and rubber vomit. When subjects were asked to put either standard, square-cut fudge or poo-shaped fudge in their mouths, even though the items were identical except for appearance, few if any people would even touch the poo-shaped fudge.

They also took photos of well-liked people and intensely disliked people and required subjects to throw darts at the photos, aiming for a central point between the eyes. They were then asked to imagine the faces of people they knew personally, and either definitely liked or intensely disliked. People were consistently less accurate when throwing darts at photos of well-liked people than when aiming darts at images of well-liked people. (The exception was when they imagined the face of the researcher who had offered them poo-shaped fudge. Though they said they liked this researcher, their dart-throwing accuracy suggested otherwise.)

Am I the only one who thought that cake #4 doesn't have anything to do with alright/all right? I just read alnight and thought, well, it is a heart shaped cake after all... Someone just didn't know how to properly express how they want to love you all night long.
Maybe it's just me, that's OK ;)
