What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Some of my favorite new submissions this week:

The Serial Killer:

How...?

The Cheapskate:

It's a professional cake... with a paper plate on it.

A PAPER PLATE.

The "Woohoo! Great Deal!"

Although the fact that it's on clearance does restore a little of my faith in humanity.

The Bakery Equivalent Of Jumping On The Counter, Mooning All Your Customers, And Demanding $19.50 For It:

And a double "Napy Berindag" on you!

And finally, it comes to this:

The world's most unfortunate use of "fancy Ls"

(Sorry, Jill.)

Thanks to Caroline B., Melissa M., Mandi B., Melissa P., & Amy R. for making all our childhood nicknames suddenly not seem so bad.

I see:"Happy Birthday". If you see "Napy Berindag" it means that you're depressed.

Note from Jen: But what if I see it written in white & gold??

That Frozen plate cake still looks better than the ones with the Frozen kits and the mountains that no one seems to be able to do.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

How dare those people call themselves professionals

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Guess the decorator doesn't know their "Ses", "Z"ees and "ls".

The Paper Plate on a Cake technique renders results far superior to most found on Cake Wrecks. Rather than criticizing those "decorators" who have resorted to this, we should praise those who recognize that they have no real skill in their chosen craft and have found a way to successfully fill orders that are outside of their sphere of ability (Yes, that's a thing!)
Frozen Girl and Frozen Girl's sister look just as they should, no child is traumatized and you can use the plate to serve the cake. It's a win, win, win.

Poor Jill. But the fancy B on Birthday is really pretty!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLizziebeth

Ah but at least Jizz got her happy birthday spelled correctly!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKalendi

The "Marry Me" cookie cake ... for guys who, on the spur of the moment, decide to propose because it is on sale. Ah, love.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha! Well, at least with the Frozen cake, you have something on which you can serve your first piece of cake. Maybe they should have balled napkins up into roses and used that a s a border, and stashed a couple of forks in there somewhere.

Poor Jill. I never would have guessed that was supposed to be "Jill" without Jen's caption!

I actually had to stare at the Serial cake for awhile to figure out that it was supposed to match the logo on the phone. Wow, there really ought to be a federal program designed to help those poor dyslexic cake decorators.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

BWAHAHAHA - Jizz! I snorted so hard on that one!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKimS

The comment about "praising" the "decorators" for recognizing they don't have skills and slapping a paper plate, calling it "professional" and STILL charging the customer as though they put effort into it....No. It's lazy and should not be encouraged with pats on the back.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJollyolly

They should have had a stack of paper plates on top. Easy to cut'n'serve.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRoRoRoUrBoat

Was the last CW bitten by a vampire ? I'm seeing two puncture wounds between Happy and Birthday .

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterThe Former CB

On that last cake…you can’t have a birthday without the jizz…(and, of course, “spheres of ability”)…but, where are the “balloons”?

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLittle Boy Blue

Tom, I'm sorry but if you see " happy birthday" on that cake, then you can't spell.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterlaura

Naaah, it's not a typo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEay8WKBu7c

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBetty Boop

The Frozen plate is kind of tricky... because it's not really legal to recreate that image without license from the owner. Using a licensed product on a cake is really the only legal way to do it, unless you want to majorly pay out for rights (or try to fly under the radar and not get sued). That's why stores use figurines and such.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAbbe

"Happy birthday, Jizz"? Oh Come on!! (Sorry)

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJenifer

I guess Jill should have gone sans serif!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAwesomeAud

A PAPER PLATE. Have they no shame? At least scan the paper plate and print it on a sheet of edible paper, so the kids don't have an ugly cake with messed-up frosting after the plate is removed.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjune7

I've finally figured out what's going on with these cakes that are supposed to look like something and never do. You've probably heard of the What Color Is The Dress meme that's going around right now. Some people see the dress as blue and black while others see white and gold. ( If you've no idea, here's a link that explains it - http://gizmodo.com/what-the-fuck-is-wrong-with-your-eyes-a-dress-explaine-1688364883 ) All this time we thought they were horrible decorators and it turns out they just can't see!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

Hello?!! I'm never spending hours decorating my kid's cake again - the paper plate thing is genius!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterChristiane

Marry Me cos I'm cheap?? Not a good look! Is the writing on that CCC even in English??

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterStiria_the_fast_one

I'm marvelling at what the first decorator's concept of space and colour must be like. I want him or her hauled down to a lab for a brain scan and a barrage of cognitive testing. This is something unique and radical, perhaps a mutation that could lead to the next level of human endeavour.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAviatrix

The paper plate on a cake is a total decorating fail, even though it looks neat, because it is *not* decorating.

And, I'm sorry Jill, but I laughed so hard I snorted.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRachel CrazyMum

@ RoRoRoUrBoat: Hmmm....you've made me wonder, now. How can we be sure that the entire center of the cake ISN'T just one big stack of paper plates, with frosting all over it? Here's another question:who really cares? The girls won't...trust me. I have a "Frozen"-fanatic granddaughter. She'd have a Frozen paper-plate frizbee frolic with her friendz and love every minute!

Well played, Jenifer. Well played.

Anyone else see today's Tina's Groove comic strip? It's a cake! http://tinasgroove.com/comics/february-27-2015/

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBookworm

Aw, just caught the reference to "double dumb-@$$ on you!" My favorite Trek movie! Miss you already, Mr. Spock.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermerrin

I'd like to think the decorator that did the Marry Me cake was paying tribute to Maybe Funke from Arrested Development :-)

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

A "Marry Me" clearance cookie cake says "financially responsible". Sounds like a keeper to me!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDale

Maybe the paper plate is for someone who couldn't have an edible image (due to food allergies or something). Trying to give the benefit of the doubt, because it's really nicely done otherwise!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterFiona

I think, based on wreckorators history on here that it's safe to assume the plate was brought in and they asked to have it put on a cake- as in, recreate the pic in icing on the cake. But the "pro" took it to mean literally put the plate on the cake.
I do agree tho, at least no children were traumatized by that version.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNiferWaters

Ok I'm gonna say it. If you were a HOME baker who needed a frozen cake and it was after all the shops had closed and a paper plate was the ONLY Frozen thing in the house then it is a little bit genius.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

The paper plate thing is genius, as long as they don't charge as much as a fully decorated cake.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMary D.

Actually, within markets such as custom cake decoration and vehicle decaling, I think Fair Use may apply.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTyler G

I do hope that Jill got something she wanted for her birthday, other than the cake. It could have been worse though - it could have been written in white....

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMike C

But it IS a very nice paper plate, LOL!

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

Oh man what have I missed? I had to get my computer fixed and come back to these lmao. Oh man poor Jill.

February 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

Already I can guess what the next Sunday Sweets is going to be... or had better be...

February 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

Considering some of the Frozen wrecks floating out there, this one is the least offensive. It looks halfway decent, nobody's name is misspelled (sorry Jill!) and the bow is edible! Having said that it should be on clearance for five bucks due to laziness or lack of talent!

February 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

Jizz lol. that is classic. hahahahahahaha

February 28, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjaylene

At least the edge piping on Jill's cake is black and red, not white...

February 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

Guess my mind isn't too dirty. I read Jill's cake as Happy Birthday J; 22. Like some kind of Bingo number.

March 1, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJohtodile

That last cake looks like it has bullet holes.
