What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Gets All Dolled Up

It's National Doll Day, you say? WELL, THEN. Let's find some Sweet doll cakes and celebrate!

I bet most of you remember the classic Barbie version our moms and grandmoms used to make:

(By Butik Pasta)

Though, for the record, I don't remember them being NEARLY this pretty. Ruffly pearl goodness!

Or how about this Belle?

(By Say It With Cake)

And all this hand-piped "embroidery" could make a grown woman squeal:

(By Callicious)

WOWIE.

Ahh, but there's more to life than just Barbie dolls, my friends!

There are also BLYTHE dolls.

(By Cake Central user Dolca Llepolia)

You're not going to believe this, but the doll is made of modeling chocolate. YES, REALLY. This baker is mind-blowingly talented, and she seems to specialize in sculpting edible Blythes.

Here's another one:

Ah! How could you not keep her on a shelf forever? (Again, all edible!)

Now let's get really old-school for minute, because I have fond memories of my old Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls:

(By Michelle Pack of Cakestrings)

How perfect is this buttercream version? So sweet!

Or, if you want the whole doll:

(By Amazing Grace Cakes)

Hit the link for a tutorial, too!

I realize Raggedy Ann is a little "old fogey" for my younger readers, so here, lemme make it up to you:

(By Out-Of-The-Box Cakes)

Monster High!!

From my casual browsing, it appears there are about eleventy billion different Monster High dolls to collect. Which is awesome, but also kind of overwhelming. See, in MY day, young whippersnappers, we just had Barbie, Skipper, Ken, and their stable full of My Little Ponies.

That said... this girl is way cooler than Barbie:

(By Sweet Things)

Ok, time for another history lesson, because after wading through an entire internet of surprisingly creepy Cabbage Patch Kid cakes (Do. Not. Google.), I found one that is utterly adorable:

(By Go Wild Cakes)

Look at those hair ringlets! And she's even in an edible version of the box, with the birth certificate!
Squee!

Ahem.

And finally, a confession: today's post was very nearly nothing but 10 or 12 Lalaloopsy doll cakes.

Why?

BECAUSE LOOK:

(By Sweet Cakes By Jessica)

And lookie!

(By Viva La Cake)

And... and... [pointing frantically]...!!

(By Amelia's Cake Addiction)

AAAAA! SO CUTE!

Ahem.

Well, happy Doll Day, everyone! Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to do a little celebratory shopping. ("John, sweetie, just how creepy DO you find tiny button eyes?")

Be sure to check out our Sunday Sweets Directory if you want to see which bakers in your area have been featured here on Sweets!

I totally Googled "Cabbage Patch Kid cakes". I was not disappointed.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlli Ryan

I have to say, that, even though it is well done, I find the BLYTHE doll with the rabbit ears totally creepy. All the others are very cute! Love your site!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

I won't let my kids have anything to do with Lalaloopsy because I can't stand those creepy black eyes. If they were any other color, maybe. Otherwise, gorgeous cakes.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKate

The Lalaloopsies are a bit Coraline-esque...

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

Oh the Lalas and Raggedys are SO cute.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDis fan

I would have never thought to combine Sailor Moon with Cabbage Patch dolls, honestly. And I've come across some interesting crossovers.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I would settle for the ferris wheel on the last cake. Squee, indeed!

I also searched for "Cabbage Patch kids cakes." That cake pan must die.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I cannot look at the Lalloopsy dolls after having seen Coraline.

Those Barbie cakes are stunning, though!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

I love the Raggedy Ann! The only doll I ever liked!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterB2

The 3rd one down ("Jean"'s cake) looks properly haughty...(Did she just mutter "Let them eat someone else's cake"?); it's also terrifically detailed. Sweetness! Lucky little kids! =^~.~^=

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I have a fear of Lalaloopsys and I don't care for Monster High... these are all so awesome though!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter-Unknown-

the only trouble with the gorgeous cakes you show on sunday is that is a crying shame to cut them - and i know they are delicious. thank goodness they can live forever in pictures.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjane lewis

Who could slice Raggedy Ann's face?

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTachybaptus

Lovely doll cakes! What a great idea for a post.

And thanks for including a fondant-free one.

Cabbage Patch kids are creepy, edible or not.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I googled Cabbage Patch Kid cakes and now have seen baby heads coming out of green vaginas.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLiessa

But...but...no voodoo doll cakes...

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim

someone saying "do not google" practically means "open another tab while i wait for your shock response."

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterwoolyshamblers

Barbie, what are you doing? You know cake goes right to your hips.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnoni

these are just so cute!!! so very talented bakers out there! as someone who himself got a (fabulous!) barbie birthday cake as a surprise a few years ago, i approve! thanks for sharing...

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

I must learn when told to NOT do something to heed said advice. Yep, I did it..I ventured into the images of Cabbage Patch doll cakes. <shudder>..those bodyless heads will be haunting my nightmares tonight...wonder how many kids are in therapy becuase of them? TODAY'S cakes well, take the cake...gorgeous! and yes, who could cut Raggesdy's face! and looking at Laloopsie and those big eyed doll things all I can say is, thank God I have boys!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim

http://thatswhatjennysaid.com/2013/08/08/baby-showers-cakes-gone-wrong-horribly-horribly-wrong/

Omg I googled. The cabbage patch cake isn't even the worst :(

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercarisa

The cakes all show amazing talent, even the Lalaloopsies are cute. I'm totally with John on the dolls, though, they creep me out! I teased my son that he would have bad dreams of the doll visiting him in the night if one of the actual dolls touched him. I love 8 year old boys!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJake and Me

These cakes are so adorable! The only disappointment is the final lala loopsy cake. I thought the ferris wheel looked more like plastic than fondant, and a quick google search revealed that it is in fact a toy. The cake is still beautiful (especially the button details!), but it is a bit of a let down to know the show-stopping feature is a toy.

And for the record, the Sailor Moon/Cabbage Patch doll cake is the most unexpectedly adorable thing I've ever seen!

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnna

I didn't know doll cakes could be cute and well done! Though I am going to heed your advice and the reactions of other readers and never google cabbage patch kid cakes.

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGreta

Oh my sweetness, all these cakes were awesome, but I have to say (and I I think I've got 15 yrs on you), the Raggedy Ann doll just whisked me back to age 10 in an instant! I had full sized Ann and Andy dolls from the early 70s. Oh man, I just loved them. It's the only thing that can really bring me back that far. Wish I had them now, but they got damaged in the house fire... Ah well... life happens...

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJeanne

Yes, the sheer amount of Monster High dolls is why I'm always broke. Oops!
These cakes are pretty awesome, I wouldn't have complained about a post of nothing but LaLaOopsey! (You should buy a bunch!)

August 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZombiEdward

Thanks for sharing!!!http://www.xn--dolallepolia-mdb.com/

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDolÇa llepolia

As Anna pointed out, on the last cake the ferris wheel, the dolls and their accessories are all plastic toys. I know because my daughter has them all. Not that I'm complaining though; it's still a beautiful cake and hey, the birthday girl probably got to keep the decorations so, win-win! And just to nit pick a tiny bit more, the Cabbage Patch cake (which is mind blowing in it's detail) is not a Sailor Moon crossover. Back in the 80s, little girls sometimes wore sailor tops and dresses having nothing to do with anime cosplay. I know because I was there and was made to wear them myself :)
I absolutely love the Belle cake! And this blog in general! Keep up the good work :)

I would seriously live a Sock Monkey cake. I didn't have Barbie dolls when I was a kid (We DID get a knock off the first Christmas my Mim and step-Dad got married but our German Shepherd at the feet off mine Christmas morning...

My Sock Monkey was beloved. Unfortunately, he got thrown into the river by my friend (at least that's how I remember his demise) when I was 5.

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMudhooks

I cannot get over the "skirt" cakes. I NEVER thought I'd see a good one of those, let alone several STUNNING ones!!

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

My 3-year-old son is intermittently fond of Lalaloopsy. My husband, thanks to Coraline, is decidedly not. Myself, I think some of the commercials and toy variations are MUCH creepier than the standard figures, without needing to bring Gaiman references into it at all. (Talking chihuahuas in wigs? Swappable body parts?) Those cakes, however, are adorable.

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlenxa

@sendingtheclowns.... Hahaha... That's vey apt description of the Jean Doll..... I laughed so much!!! Haughty is apt ... It's mine and it was very tongue in cheek making it for fun :) xx

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCallicious Cakes

The Cabbage Patch cake is sort of like those baby cakes; how could anyone cut into it without feeling like a murderer?

August 4, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAwesomeAud

SERIOUSLY.... button eyes are creepy.
I read a book when I was young about a dollhouse and it did a number on my dreams.
Then they come out with that bloody movie Coraline... Nightmares.

So I got a little behind in reading CW, so I saw the horrible doll cakes before this post. What a contrast! Wow, these are so amazing. That third cake? I mean, just, wow.
