What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Summer Top 10 List

Top Ten Summer Activities:

- Wearing Flip-Flops To Absolutely Everything, Including Weddings:

(By Tressa Westerhold)

Of course, for us Floridians that's more of a year-long activity. ;)

- Renting a Convertible and Driving With The Top Down:

(By Just Cool Cakes)

Preferably with something like Magic Carpet Ride blasting on the stereo.

- Ice Cream:

(By Twisted Sugar Cakery)

Lots and LOTS of ice cream. And eating it fast before it melts, too.

- Wasting away in Margaritaville:

(Sub'd Jennifer W., baker unknown)

Because it's 5 o'clock somewhere!

- A Little Light Summer Reading:

(By TIER Luxury Cakes)

- Build a Treehouse:

(By Be Magenta)

Or at least THINK about building one.

(Mine would have a clear dome on top for star gazing, and a big hammock bed. Plus lots of twinkle lights. And a mini fridge. Because MINI FRIDGE.)

- Summer Blockbusters:

(Sub'd by Olivia D., made by Andrea's Sweet Cakes)

Check your brain at the door, and stock up on popcorn and Junior Mints. Nomz.

- Beach Day!

(Baker unknown. Anyone recognize it?)

That's all buttercream - and a rather brilliant use of gumballs on the border, I gotta say!

- Followed by Roasting Marshmallows Over a Bonfire:

(By Your Happy Cake)

No wait, that's not enough: we want s'more!

Hey, we're about to finish our Summer Top Ten list. What're you gonna do now?!

(By Cuteology Cakes)

We're going to DISNEYLAND!!

Ah, if only, am I right? ;)

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Is it just me, or is that macaw on #4 looking just a bit, er, wasted?

Must. Have. Flip-flop. Cake! I'd live in flip-flops all year long, but y'know...Iowa.

I am also now craving mint chocolate chip ice cream.

And that buttercream cake is superb. Any other cake I would probably say "Whoa...too busy." But with it being summer-themed, that's what it's all about...cramming as much fun as you can into three tiers...errr...months!

Ice cream!! Popcorn!! A castle that actually looks like a castle and not.... something else.

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterThe Former CB

@The Former CB, that's exactly what I thought. Bakers, turrets can look like turrets! And that brick is superb.

i love that the ice cream bar looks like someone has taken a few bites out of it.

That beach one is NOT all buttercream. There are quite a few fondant accents on that cake.. it looks like it was just iced in buttercream.

The parrot needed a pencil-thin moustache, and it would have been uber-perfect. As it is, it's just perfectly amazing.

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLizzie!!

heh -- here in Florida, "formal" means you have to wear socks. :)d

and yes, THAT is how you do a castle with turrets. Yay.

I love Sunday Sweets.

I love that beach cake! In Western Washington we have about a month of flip flop weather. The rest is dangles with socks weather :-)

Love 'em all, but I would prefer my cheeseburger in paradise not be right under the bird's butt. Just sayin'! :D

How DID they create that fire?!? I could understand the poured sugar (like making peanut brittle or something) look for the red, but what about the glow? Is there a light hidden in there?

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterA. Nony Moose

I love all the cakes and the commentary but *that* is not my idea of light reading (sorry teachers)

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNight Owl

You forgot about Florida's other summer pastime: constant thunderstorms. :P

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDeadly Unicorn

My sister wore pink flip-flops with her wedding gown - but she didn't have them on her cake!

These are all beautiful, but I think my favorites are the flip-flops and the beach day. =-)

"The Great Gatsby" isn't that long!

June 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

I was looking for the words "Under the cake" on the second one.

June 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterA Friend

actually for the 2nd cake, I'd go with Buffett's song Ragtop day. perfect for drivin down I-4 blasting any of JB's early tunes (anything coconut telegraph or earlier) with the top down. and the castle cake shocked me to my core. turrets that ACTUALLY look like turrets and not man parts! see! IT CAN BE DONE!!!!! huzzah!

June 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJamie JO

LOVE the ice cream on a stick cake! That's one I wouldn't feel bad about cutting into.

June 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Loved the cake with the movie tickets.

June 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Saxon

But would you have prewrapped sausages and dijon ketchup in that mini fridge?

June 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGina

I kind of have to agree that it looks like only the water and foliage/flowers/trees are buttercream. Everything else looks fondant to me!
