Sunday Sweets: Deco-licious
January 26, 2014 Everything old is new again... again... and I for one couldn't be happier. Vintage styles rock. (Well, unless it's from the 70s - but we're all agreed that decade never existed, right? Right.)
Case-in-point: Art Deco cakes.

Those plaques are all made of sugar, using royal icing in a color flow, or "run-in" technique. It's incredibly fragile, and ridiculously difficult to do. Plus all four sides have window panels in front - look closely, and you can see the gap on the inside edge. That is ridiculous, you guys. RIDICULOUS. Mad props to all the bakers out there with this kind of patience.

If you've ever been to South Beach, then you know Art Deco and pastels go hand in hand. It's also one of the most beautiful architectural styles ever. In fact, this peach cutie really reminds me of some of my favorite Art Deco buildings:

Mint & gold, eh? Didya know that gold leaf and mint are 2 design trends for 2014? Pretty neat-o. However that min on the cake was so subtle I thought it was white at first. A very pretty cake, probably my favorite of the group.

These are all beautiful cakes but that last one is an absolute stunner! Jaw dropping! If that was my cake I would kill anyone who would try to cut that up and eat it. I would make everyone pay admission for the privilege of viewing it.
Well I don't know what your version of the 70s was like but most of these would fit right in mine! Art Deco and twenties and thirty's glamour were very popular styles for fonts, graphics and colours. All of these look very seventies but then I was born in 1960...
The mint & gold cake looked like cream-colour and bronze on my screen, and I LOVED it! I guess a cake that lovely looks wonderful no matter the colour-scheme.
I'll have to look up where South Beach is. I'm guessing Florida, but maybe California.

For me, the mint and gold cake looked more white and copper colored.
Plus the peach cake looked orange.

oh and I forgot to say most of them look like the kind of shiny top hats Noddy Holder from Slade wore so totally 70s!!

For art deco fans, the city of Darmstadt, Germany still has a number of art deco buildings, and a nice museum with a very good art deco ("Jugendstil" in German) collection.
So the 70's didn't really exist, eh?.....Yeah...I'll buy that.

Quite possibly my favorite Sunday Sweets ever! I absolutely love art deco and these are all just stunning. I can't decide if the first or last is my favorite! Don't mind me, I'll just be sitting here staring at this page for the rest of the day.

Absolutely stunning.
Art Deco is one of my favorite art styles, so these strike a chord for me! My favorite is the black with painted gold leaf (reminds me of the lobby of the Empire State Building) and a close second is the last cake - with a nod to the Roaring Twenties trends, Art Deco, flapper dress with fringe/pearls/feathers. They are all stunning.
Though I like the interior of the Empire State Building, my favorite Art Deco building exterior is the Chrysler Builing - I'm right with you @sendingintheclowns. The lines and the aluminum exterior, all very yummy!
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! I think this is my favorite Sunday cake post ever. I want to get married again just so I can have a deco cake. Well, that's probably not the best idea, but still. These are INCREDIBLE!
Now we know what Daisy and Jay Gatsby's wedding cake would have been like, if they had managed to get married.
I absolutely adore the last goldleaf cake, and I know these are certainly not wrecks, but I just have to put this out there: Hellraiser. Look again. Augh! Terrifying...but still gorgeous. I'd hesitate to bite into it though; too pretty...and there could be chains. :-)
