What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Deco-licious

Everything old is new again... again... and I for one couldn't be happier. Vintage styles rock. (Well, unless it's from the 70s - but we're all agreed that decade never existed, right? Right.)

Case-in-point: Art Deco cakes.

(By Style Sweet CA)

Check out the sweet style from Style Sweet! That's some old school glam, right there.

Or for something a little more modern:

(By Luxury Creations, featured here)

I'm digging that green.

Of course, when you need drama, this is the way to go:

(By Artisan Cake Company)

You just can't beat handpainted gold leaf for maximum "wow" factor.

Or perhaps you prefer silver?

(By Amelie's Kitchen)

This would be the perfect dainty little wedding cake. And the bride should wear drop earrings that match those side pieces, and a tiara that matches the top tier - am I right?

Of course most Art Deco is all about bold geometric shapes and colors. You know, like this:

(By The Cake Whisperer)

The flower and feathers soften it just enough, and really give it that modern flair. Love it.

Now here's a cake that took some jaw-dropping technical skill:

(By Donnatella)

Those plaques are all made of sugar, using royal icing in a color flow, or "run-in" technique. It's incredibly fragile, and ridiculously difficult to do. Plus all four sides have window panels in front - look closely, and you can see the gap on the inside edge. That is ridiculous, you guys. RIDICULOUS. Mad props to all the bakers out there with this kind of patience.

Next, one of my new favorite color combinations:

(By Confectionery Designs)

Mint and gold. Mmmm.

If you've ever been to South Beach, then you know Art Deco and pastels go hand in hand. It's also one of the most beautiful architectural styles ever. In fact, this peach cutie really reminds me of some of my favorite Art Deco buildings:

(By My Cupcakery)

And can't you just see this one all lit up with neon lights on the beach front?

(From the 2013 Capital Area Cake Show, found here)

Completely in love with those polka dots.

Here's another one using run-in icing, this time to make accent pieces that look like chic jewelry:

(By Djalmma Reinalldo)

Ok, I want the topper as a pin, the bottom band as a bracelet, and a soft teal cardigan to wear them with. (Someone out there is getting this down, right?)

Hang on, I just found the most grin-inducing Deco cake yet:

(By Lindy's Cakes)

Sha-POW! Grin city.

When it comes to sheer elegance, though, I think this is the clear winner:

(By Nom Nom Sweeties)

The fringe, the feathers, the perfect lines and subtle ombre effect... yep. I'll take it. :D

Mint & gold, eh? Didya know that gold leaf and mint are 2 design trends for 2014? Pretty neat-o. However that min on the cake was so subtle I thought it was white at first. A very pretty cake, probably my favorite of the group.

!!SWOON!! I've always loved Art Deco! (The Chrysler Building is one of my favorite examples.)
The sixth one down looks like it's made of porcelain! Gorgeous!! These are spectacular! =^~.~^=

These are all beautiful cakes but that last one is an absolute stunner! Jaw dropping! If that was my cake I would kill anyone who would try to cut that up and eat it. I would make everyone pay admission for the privilege of viewing it.

Well I don't know what your version of the 70s was like but most of these would fit right in mine! Art Deco and twenties and thirty's glamour were very popular styles for fonts, graphics and colours. All of these look very seventies but then I was born in 1960...

The mint & gold cake looked like cream-colour and bronze on my screen, and I LOVED it! I guess a cake that lovely looks wonderful no matter the colour-scheme.

I'll have to look up where South Beach is. I'm guessing Florida, but maybe California.

second commet!!!!!! I thought it was white too.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterenchantressbatrider

For me, the mint and gold cake looked more white and copper colored.
Plus the peach cake looked orange.
Still lovely though.

@DNA, you are correct with Florida.

oh and I forgot to say most of them look like the kind of shiny top hats Noddy Holder from Slade wore so totally 70s!!

For art deco fans, the city of Darmstadt, Germany still has a number of art deco buildings, and a nice museum with a very good art deco ("Jugendstil" in German) collection.

So the 70's didn't really exist, eh?.....Yeah...I'll buy that.

"Anybody who says they remember the 70's...wasn't there."

Love these cakes. I should start thinking about my birthday cake even though I hate birthdays. Absolutely gorgeous. Love the one with sprinkles.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Quite possibly my favorite Sunday Sweets ever! I absolutely love art deco and these are all just stunning. I can't decide if the first or last is my favorite! Don't mind me, I'll just be sitting here staring at this page for the rest of the day.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

And to think I don't really care for Art Deco. You have changed my mind. These are stunning!

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Most of these are not my cup of tea, but I love the last one. Beautiful, and skillfully done. I love it.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermelanie sparkles

Thank you for featuring my cake! It has been done during a 5 days Masterclass with Eddie Spence, The Master of Royal Icing.

They look like something out of the fabulous party scenes in "Gatsby"!

January 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSteve G.

Absolutely stunning.

Art Deco is one of my favorite art styles, so these strike a chord for me! My favorite is the black with painted gold leaf (reminds me of the lobby of the Empire State Building) and a close second is the last cake - with a nod to the Roaring Twenties trends, Art Deco, flapper dress with fringe/pearls/feathers. They are all stunning.

Though I like the interior of the Empire State Building, my favorite Art Deco building exterior is the Chrysler Builing - I'm right with you @sendingintheclowns. The lines and the aluminum exterior, all very yummy!

Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! I think this is my favorite Sunday cake post ever. I want to get married again just so I can have a deco cake. Well, that's probably not the best idea, but still. These are INCREDIBLE!

January 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMerrie

Now we know what Daisy and Jay Gatsby's wedding cake would have been like, if they had managed to get married.

March 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRosa

I absolutely adore the last goldleaf cake, and I know these are certainly not wrecks, but I just have to put this out there: Hellraiser. Look again. Augh! Terrifying...but still gorgeous. I'd hesitate to bite into it though; too pretty...and there could be chains. :-)
