What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Adventure Is Out There!

Hey, you know what time it is?

(By Jocelyne at Over the Top Cakes)

ADVENTURE TIME!!

Yep, it's time to head into parts unknown, where we'll explore new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where our destinies and fortunes take us.

And by "fortunes" I mean, of course, giant treasure chests filled with ... um, fortune:

(By Truly Scrumptious Cakes)

(I'm especially loving the giant googly eye and heart eye patch on Miss Skull over there.)

First we have to get there, though, so be sure to choose the most fantastical mode of transportation possible:

(By Make Pretty Cakes)

(Also acceptable: Nautilus-style submarines, flying luck dragons, and ruby slippers.)

Although if we happen upon a blue police box, I'm warning you now:

(By Cakes by Jody)

DIBS.

Of course, every proper adventure needs a loyal, swashbuckling companion:

(By Sweet Ruby Cakes)

PERFECT.

PURRRFECT.

Oh, and at some point we'll be required to run screaming from a giant monster who later turns out to be friendly. Let's see, I'm thinking... dinosaur. Yes? YES.

(Submitted by Rebecca H. and made by Mea Sculpture Cake Design)

BIG HEAD LITTLE ARMS!! Woot!
This makes me ridiculously happy.

(Speaking of which: hey, Rex, if you're happy and you know it...! :D)

Ahem.

Of course we'll have to face some real villains at some point.

(By Tatiana Melfa of Dolce Tati)

Though hopefully not this many at once! Yikes!
(Also, WOW! So gorgeous!)

Once we're done with all the running and screaming and climactic showdowns, though, it'll be time to burst into song with a few adorable woodland creatures. Or maybe penguins:

(Searched for ages, but couldn't track this down! Anyone know who made it?)

And no matter how you arrived at your adventure, you always have to leave it with a dramatic take-off - maybe by umbrella like Mary Poppins up there.

Or, if you have a tendency to overpack:

(By Cake Central member PennieK)

(I've seen a lot of UP house cakes, and that is - hands down - the best edible balloon bunch I've seen.)

Then, once you're safely home and ready to tell your tale, you'll realize what the greatest adventure of all truly is:

(By Sihirli Spatula)

D'awww. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go bawl like a baby over a cartoon again. (Curse you, Pixar!)

Psst. Hey. Curious which bakeries in your area have been featured here on Sweets? Then be sure to check our Sunday Sweets Directory!

This is an odd coincidence. Just yesterday I was browsing around in CakesDecor.com, looking at a bunch of CorrieCakes. She made a simple, round birthday cake using this exact Mary Poppins silhouette, only it was lying flat on the top of the cake, not standing up. And the 2 rows of buildings making up the London skyline were the same shapes, only with more light-and-dark contrast. I would swear that this 2-tier Mary Poppins cake was also her work, except photos of her stuff ALWAYS have the CorrieCakes watermark. (Some extremely computer-savvy tach wizards know how to remove watermarks through a process known as “hacking”. Maybe that’s what happened here.) Whadaya know, I found it again! Here’s the link:

Golly, if someone had presented me with that Mary Poppins cake when I was seven, I would have burst with excitement and joy, and finished with a supercalifragilisticexpiallidocious meltdown! Heck, the same thing would happen if I got that cake today! Somebody *must* find the cake-maker responsible!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

Looks like I'm the first (unless somebody barely beats me to it). *LOVE* the "UP" cakes. That's my dad's favorite animated movie of all time (possibly his favorite movie, period).

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwoodnwheel

I am not happy that Beast is on the villain cake! Gaston should've been!!!! :(

Love BOTH of the UP cakes!

Flying.....*long pause*.....luck dragon.

You could get yourself in trouble with that phrase. ;)

AWW. Carl and Ellie.

The "Up" cakes--fantastic! They all are gorgeous, but I love "Up" and now I have to go watch the first 15 minutes again.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

shouldn't that be the 'puurrrfect' swashbuckling companion? yuk yuk

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJacJac

I am with Michelle! I do not agree to the Beast being on the villain cake. (At least he is well done and handsome). I love that Azreal (the cat) is giving Ursula the evil eye, though! And I, too, join Jen in balling my eyes out over that cartoon. Mr. Frederickson looks (and acts) a LOT like my own dad, and my parents had a love like that, so it makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. Love all these cakes!!!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDorene

Amazing as always, but what is the Beast doing with villains? One of these things is not like the other.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

OMG! I want a TARDIS cake. Which I have, at least partial, thank you Jen for introducing me to Doctor Who. Between here and Epbot, I was convinced to watch it, and now I am in love with it.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLayla

Amen to the Beast comments!!!

Glad I'm not the first to point out that he's the HERO not the villain. Gaston belongs up there, not him. *Sigh*

Okay, now that the six-year-old girl in me has had her say, I do think that the cakes today are awful pretty.

LOVE the TARDIS!! :) (And your dibs don't work if I find it first... sorry)

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

I join with many others in wondering what Beast was doing on the villain cake. As soon as I saw that, I said, "Huh?" Perhaps this cakemaker needs to review the movie!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

That TARDIS cake is amazing!

I am in agreement with all who said "Why is Beast on the villains cake?" Bzuh?

And that last cake made me cry. I'm crying over CAKE! What the what? (Both the UP cakes are fabulous. ALL these cakes are fabulous!)

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Posts like these always want me to try and order one for my birthday, but I keep hesitating because I don't know how much these cakes usually cost and there's no price guide that I can see...

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSheri

Maybe Gaston is wearing a Beast mask to fool everyone.

Loving the Mary Poppins cake! Does it take more than four days to make, y'think? My birthday's on Thursday, and I'm contemplating asking for either this or the UP cake. Although the Puss in Boots is cute too!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

So glad someone else also pointed out that the Beast should not have been on that villian cake! Loved every cake shown but was a little put off when I saw Beast where Gaston belongs! Love the Up cake, those balloons are awesome!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

As a huge Beauty and the Beast fan, I'm offended that Beast is on the "villain" cake!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterchristine

The Puss In Boots cake is wonderful, makes me feel very happy looking at the adorable-ness!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

The Mary Poppins is a cricut pattern

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoAnn

Master? Master? Best movie EVER!!!

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbbey

I agree- the Beast doesn't belong on that cake! Sure, he needs a little anger management therapy at the beginning, but he gets it together by the end.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Wow. Those Disney themed cakes are very detailed. I love the Mary Poppins one.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Saxon

You need to feature some cakes from Heritage Bakery in Livonia, Mi. They just did a Despicable Me cake and posted it on facbook that is amazing. And they mad R2D2 for my friends wedding for the grooms cake.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Aw, it's not nice to make fun of poor little "Not-Enough-Arms-To-Say-So"! So maybe he CAN'T quite clap his...er, "hands"? At least he can BITE-and know it! Just look at those canines (or whatever-they-WERE-called-before-dogs-came-along)!
=^~.~^=

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

EPCOT morphs into...BEASTCOT? (I've got a funny feeling about this...)

=^0.o^= (I hope you're wrong.)

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I am not sure why you have to call dibs on the TARDIS, it is bigger on the inside so there is room for everyone.
Love all the cakes though.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

No one cries alone...really. I've "bawled like a baby" over a "cartoon" (or two), myself! (And yes, mostly Diz "can-we-say-that-knee-word?" movies.) That they can, and in fact DO elicit genuine, human emotions using something that isn't human...well, those aren't "cartoonists." They're artists, in my book.("Cartoon artists"-whatever.) I could cry over one of THESE cakes, truth be told...the "UP" one reminds me of my Dad and Mom (who're both gone). Sweetness reigns/rains...!!
=^u.u,^=

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

There's no way I could cut into and actually eat that Puss in Boots cake. It is so darn adorable!!!
Some people are so clever.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFM

BLAST! I was hoping for some TINTIN. Great post though.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbby

@Marebabe The probably reason why the silhouettes are the same is because they are taken from the poster/promotional material for the new Mary Poppins musical. (If you do a Google Image search for "mary poppins musical" you'll see what I mean.)

I was able to trace that image back to a Pinterest post, but the uploader gave no source, and I wasn't about to register for the site just to ask him: http://pinterest.com/pin/553309504189515465/

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNebet

Beautiful cakes. Love the Mary Poppins cake.

August 11, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterterri

Thanks, Nebet! :)

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarebabe

I'm just as glad the Beast is on the cake. I used to love Beauty & the Beast until I found myself in an abusive marriage. "A little anger management therapy" fixing THAT behavior is Disney Delusion™ at its best.

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterUnicornMom

Umm, the Beast WAS a villain at the beginning of the movie remember? it was only AFTER Belle "civilized" him he became the hero. I mean, heros don't torment old men, imprison pretty young girls and verbally abuse them, are cruel to their staff etc. so he is on the correct cake for the start of the film.

Now onto other things. I would LOVE the T.A.R.D.I.S cake as I have a key to the police box and am ready to travel or eat as needed. :-) I wonder which regeneration comes with the box? I'm hoping one of the first 5!

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

The Marry Poppins cake might have been baked by Tyla Mann.

See http://pinterest.com/tylajean/

At least, that's what Google's reverse image search suggests.

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSean

Jamie, your argument makes sense... but if this is supposed to be "pre-Belle" Beast, why is he wearing the date-night costume?

By the way, Up probably is one of the sweetest Pixar movies ever made (possible tie with Toy Story 3) and it is wonderful to see that sweetness captured by sweets.

And the TARDIS... YaHoo!!!! Jen, can we be your companions?

And the Treasure Chest... It looks so frickkin' real! Is that sand or sugar? And the texture of the wood... speechless...

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndie

The Mary Poppins cake is from my bakery Legacy Cakes in Grapevine, Texas! Artist was the very talented Elizabeth Rowe!

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMegan R

Also, no cricut cuts for Mary Poppins! Everything was hand cut! Glad yall are enjoying!

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMegan R

@Megan R Yay, mystery solved!

http://www.legacycakesbakery.com/gallery_photos/birthdays/bd34.jpg

I wonder where the Pinterest image came from? It's got a different background (photoshopped?) and is lacking the 9, but it's obviously the same cake.

August 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNebet

If I'd been presented with that Mary Poppins cake as a child, I would've totally plotzed. I had planned on being her for Halloween this year, but I've committed to two other costumes, so that'll be next year. It's the costume I've wanted longer than any other, so it NEEDS to happen.

I saw UP at the drive-in when my baby was a week old. We'd had a crappy NICU stay and my husband was about to lose his job and I was at the refreshment stand wanting to eat everything since I was a week postpartum and the baby had figured out the nursing thing and was darn good at it. I turned to the screen during the opening montage. It was the sweetest, saddest thing I had ever seen. I was literally SOBBING when I got to the counter. "I'd like a twist cone, please." I'm tearing up now just thinking of it. (The baby is now four years old. He's fine. I'm the one weeping just remembering it.) Thanks, Pixar.
And now I want cake.

August 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaggyD

It's so awesome to see our Adventure Time wedding cake featured! It was such a work of art, and so yummy! All the cakes here are gorgeous, but Beast should not be on the Villain cake.

August 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRakishLass

When I was little, I hated Adventure Time. (You know, I kinda would say that I don't think it existed then, but I saw it on TV sooo...) Now I am less little, and let me say two things:
best. adventure time cake. ever. AND, what a nice TARDIS.
