What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: April (Baby) Showers

Warning: today's post contains violently delightful images. An all-out onslaught of adorableness awaits you. That's right, it's Baby Shower Sweets time! Prepare yourselves! Are you ready?

You'll never be ready.

We've already lined up a pair of twin baby bears in widdle baby diapers to serve on the front-lines of today's cuteness attack.

By Dream Day Cakes

Clearly, there will be no mercy.

No, your eyeballs are about to be showered with more sweetness than they can possibly handle.

Submitted by Nancy P., made by The White Flower Cake Shoppe

Did this cake do you in? Can you withstand all that whimsy? Did you think it looked extra tasty too? I did, and then I learned it was all buttercream - no fondant - and now everything makes sense.

Aha! Don't look now, but here comes one of the horseman of the Cuteocalypse.

By Pretty Cakes

He brings with him polka dots, preciousness, perfectly-piped pennants, and more preciousness.

Sweet Crocs on a cake, take a look at this!

By On the Sweet Side

It's quite literally, the sweetest pair of Crocs, in existence ever, on a cake. Sweet Crocs on a cake indeed. I'm going find an excuse to say that in everyday life.

Do you know what's cuter than a button?

Sub'd by Amanda C., made by Miso Bakes

LOTS OF BUTTONS.
That you can EAT.
Wham-o!

Additionally, what's more fun than a barrel of monkeys?

By Design Cakes

Obviously, a CAKE full of monkeys. Monkeys with swirly little tails and itty bitty belly buttons and look at that one with his tongue hanging out, ohhh my. Deep breaths. Hee, hee, hooooo.

I'm fine. It's not getting to me at all, I swear.

You seem to be holding up well to this baby shower blitz.
It's time I pull out the big guns:

By Sweet Grace Cake Designs

Baby duckies! Bubbles! PUNS! Take a moment if you need it.

But not for too long, because we're back in your face with another pun:

By Cakeage Cake Craft

... and an owl cake so delightful it could make Chuck Norris clap his hands and squeal with glee.

OK, now be careful. We're in dangerous territory here. Let me inform you before you smash your head into your monitor for a closer look that no matter how realistic it seems, this cake truly is cake:

By Kate of Vanilla Lily Cake Design

It looks innocent, but it can kill you with cuteness.
Or at least cause you to leave a greasy smear on your screen.
And no one wants that.

And this next cake is so sweet it could give your eyeballs cavities:

By Sugared Productions

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Well, before you experience a case of post-traumatic cuteness overload, I'll leave you with my favorite cake of today:

By Art Cakes

Congrats for making it to the other side of the cutest baby shower cakes anyone has to offer!
You done good, kid.

What does that monkey cake say on the little fondant "paper". It looks like "Mom and Dad are full of 37 let's welcome their new baby boy" What does that mean?

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDrockboxbox

Everyone who has the fortitude to remember the last post (baaaarffff): bask in the dots and stripes done right of this post's last fabulous cake!
Ahhhhhh. Beautiful. My eyes want to live again.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShinnewn

Now my teeth hurt those are so sweet! My favorite is the buttercream one. I am so envious of people with this sort of talent.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

It's "Mom and Dad are full of joy..." but it looked like "37" to me at first, too. I assume it's the angle, and it's much more legible in person / straight on.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWhozat

I'm blinded by the cuteness! I keep walking into things, and every time I hear another crash I just giggle and smile a little wider. You've made it absolutely impossible for me to maintain a bad-mood funk today.

(Thanks.)

These were wonderful. We need to come up with a holiday that features pastel owls.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Awesome. I'd love to see you do a whole Sunday Sweets on twin cakes (as a mother of boy/girl twins myself!)

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnette

Awwww, izza wuzza cootsy-wootsy cakey-wakey-ums! Jus' sooo preshuss! Looky-wooky!

[throat clearing noises, head-shake, all-over shudder]

[There. Coherency re-attained.]

Ahem. My, what lovely cakes. Such exquisite workmanship. Surely some of the finest examples of cakeart I have ever seen, and could never hope to match in any way. Utterly charming and adorable in every possible way.

<I>Oooohhh.... Prettttyyyy...<\i> [steady, there...]

[Control! Control!]

"Mom & Dad are full of joy" maybe?

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarly

Love the cakes, love the whole post. But what made it truly awesome and has me giggling at inappropriatea moments is the image of a clapping, squealing Chuck Norris. Family members are starting to get concerned.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJane

Finally -- cake decorators who know what a baby shower cake should look like. And hosts/hostesses who know what's appropriate to order. Thanks for the sweets!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Cutting into these wonderful cakes would be a worse sin than cutting into any mere baby shaped cake, I swear.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

"horseman of the Cuteocalypse" - the best!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersoundsorceress

I have to say, while these cakes are certainly very nice, I've always thought the use of fondant "cheating". Especially since it's pretty much INEDIBLE. :/

For a couple of years your website gave me the laugh therapy I needed. This page is beyond adorable! Thank you so much for your dedication to cakes everywhere!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCathy Hodge Smith

The row of pennants are what we call bunting over here in the UK.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

on the cake with the crocs and ducks,my first thought was, at least the duck is not gray. Been reading a lot of duck, duck, gray duck (or goose, depending on where you live). Those cakes were AWESOME! The carriage has to be my favorite for difficulty. Now, to wait for would-be cake decorators to come along and try to copy those, only to end up as wrecks! (and hopefully make it back to this website.) Thanks for clearing up the '37' question Whozat. I was trying to decipher that one myself.
To the CakeWrecks staff - THANK YOU for such joy and laughs. Always a highlight of my day.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkimrogue

On the monkey one I see, "Mom & Dad are full of joy, let's welcome their new baby boy!" All these cakes are too cute!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDani

O. M. G.

Now I want to have another baby, so I can have a cake like that. *smack* No, no I don't... It's all that cuteness... getting... to... me... Must... RESIST! AAAAHHH!

*ahem* Begging your pardon. I meant to say, "Gosh, those cakes are amazing."

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

@michelle. Fondant being inedible is a popular misconception. Maybe you have eaten some from a decorator that didn't know how to make it or used store bought fondant. Fondant is indeed edible since it is a SUGAR DOUGH. and using fondant takes a lot of skill that some decorators havent mastered yet. Please don't call it cheating unless you know the full spectrum of the art of fondant.

TOO CUTE CAKES! I am glad that people and decorators know how to make an appropriate cake for a baby shower!

:D :D :D :D d'aww

The cakes are lovely, butbI feel sorry for Baby Laurynne. Her name will be mispronounced and misspelled her entire life.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElissa

Every time I look through one of these cake art posts, I am amazed to believe that there are people who actually make those beautiful cakes, and that they are available to be bought and eaten. Now, I'm perfectly willing to believe the hilariously shameful "wrecks" because similar cakes are available all over. But the beautiful, well-done ones? Not so much.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

I want one of those flowers on the second cake! It makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it but I still want one! And a couple of buttons to nibble on would be nice!

I just love all of these! Not enough to have another baby however! Nope, nope, NOPE!

Thanks for the cute overload today! My "baby" is a 13 yr old girl and has already been sent to her room twice! I really needed the cute!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

We have here an abundance of PROOF that you can do a tasteful, appropriate, adorable baby shower cake without having to resort to headless/limbless overly-buxom torsos pushing out babies or festooned with anatomically impossible fetal limb protrusions, or the creepy babies that you must slaughter to have your dessert. Ahhh....

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTwinMom

How on earth did that baker make Crocs look cute? Clearly he or she managed it! I'm stunned.

Also, if anyone needs some counseling for their PTCD (posttraumatic cute disorder), please, seek help. PTCD is a serious, adorable disorder. Together, we can heal.

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSabs

And not a pregnant-belly torso cake to be seen!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEsty

Is this the cake equivalent of eye bleach to be viewed after viewing horrific baby shower cakes?
I think it would work.
These are sooooooooo adorable!

April 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

One of those monkeys is playing air guitar! awesome!

April 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterallie

Sharyn, you are so right, and I have just the one! We need a World Wisdom Day. Everyone has to learn a wise saying or interesting new fact, and we all get to eat chocolates, cookies & cakes with owls on them. My preference would be a date in mid-September, which is a long time from any date when I get offered chocolate, and would vaguely tie in with schools going back and summer being over. How could any politician refuse to celebrate a holiday that promotes wisdom? C'mon, Cake Wrecks fans, we can do this!

April 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMorag

Thank you to "Me." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Hey, did anyone else recognize that stroller cake from Ron Ben Israel's website? I steal ideas all the time too but I usually take the idea and CHANGE it a little, ha ha. But hats off to Vanilla Lilly Cake Design for the beautiful execution. Mine would certainly not be anywhere near as clean.

April 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen

the only thing that makes Chuck Norris squeal with glee is...uh...uhhhh...

April 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAidan

all cute but i love the button cake! so pretty!
