What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Goes Green!

Did you hear? Pantone has announced the official color of 2013, and it's GREEN!

"Is it dragon green?"

No...

By Caroline of The Roli Poli Cake Company

"Mike Wazowski green?"

No...

By Lena's Designer Cakes

"Cowabunga Green?"

Nope!

And before you ask, it's also not Starbucks green...

Salad green...

Or Yoda green:

Made by amateur baker Morgan R.

"Disappointed, I am."

And while I'd be delighted if this year's color were Green Lantern green:

Submitted by Sara C. and made by Amy Beck Cake Design

Or Yoshi green:

Submitted by Kristy L. and made by Sweet Disposition Cakes

Or maybe even Hobbit Door green:

Submitted by Sarah F. and made by Love is Cake

[squee!]

It's not.

No, I'm happy to report that the official color of 2013 is Emerald green:

By Martha Stewart Weddings

Woohoo!

Speaking as both a May baby and someone who's tired of the drab pea-soup and army greens that have been dominating the clothing aisle, I couldn't be happier about this year's color. Here's hoping today's Sweets warm you up to the choice, too!

When I saw the salad cake I half expected it to be on a large mound of tuna or something :D well done

The hobbit cake made me squee and the emerald cake was lovely

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Awesome! I totally want to eat that Hobbit cake. And the Yoshi cake. And the TMNT cake. Actually, I want to eat them all, lol. So cute!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRachelB

Good color choice! Redheads rejoice!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPsychoCat

No Kermit? I know it's easier being green these days, but still...

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterorigamislayer

Yay for us May babies and emeralds! I love green in any variety*, really, but emerald is just special.
(*My darling Dad used to call me "Hey you with the snot-green eyes." )

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermissalg

Love the Hobbit cake! And the TMNT!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

Yay for green! And a Yoda cake that actually looks like Yoda instead of a Gremlin that's been put in the blender! Also loved that Hobbit cake and the emerald cake- wow!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

Hooray! Green is my favorite color too, I'm a May baby, and green makes my green eyes just POP.

I'll just be standing over here next to these cakes to look at them. Yep, just looking, not going to sneak a piece. :P

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Emerald Green! I love emerald green.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJasini

Ooh, I can restock all of the shirts that have shrunk (in length) or worn out since the last time emerald green was in! Awesome!

Awesome cakes too! The first one, and the Yoshi cake are my favorites, though. The people who did the Yoshi cake also did a green Squash cake (from Plants vs Zombies) that's very well done (it's on the facebook link).

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

I'm so glad it's not lime green, or as I like to call it, "instant jaundice."

LOVE these cakes! Just one question: Do you think that dragon is up for adoption? I'd give him a squeaky toy...

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

I'm an October baby, so opals are my gem of choice. But the last piece
dripping with emeralds was stunning! Think we can sneak a piece off & wear them? :-)

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbmbagain803

I'll take the green lantern cake & the Mike Wazowski cake, and my son will have the Yoshi cake, thankyouverymuch! Gluten-free versions, please...:-) (Well, in my son's case, it will have to be free of gluten, dairy, eggs, corn products, all nuts (including peanuts), sesame, kiwi, strawberries, and chocolate. That's not too much to ask, is it?! :-)

PS to everyone that "came" to my impromptu birthday party/movie marathon in the Cake Wrecks Bunker the other day... Thanks so very much for all the well wishes, gluten-free treats, and movies - had an absolute blast! Hope y'all did too! :-)

That lettuce cake is totally my kinda diet food. I mean, it looks like lettuce so I'm sure it must have all the healthy properties lettuce has. That's like negative calories, right?

Awesome sweets! I think the Hobbit one would look really cute in a snowglobe too! Apparently I have a thing for snowglobes. Sadly, I don't even own one. :(

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

Being an August baby, I prefer the peridot color, but emerald green rocks too. And I will take a slice of EACH of the cakes.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFaith.TheBlonde.

Love the cakes! But not so sure about the lettuce thing. If we get a lettuce wrap around our cake, does that mean it fits into our diet plan?

Being a September baby, I'm a sapphire and LOVE that color. But I also love a beautiful emerald green! I'll take it!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Yay for us May babies!!

I also squee'd inwardly with the Hobbit hole cake, and the "vegetable" cake looks awesome. (Just realized that it's on display in a grocery store. Curious from where...)

I questioned the "Congratulations" message on the Starbucks apron, and what that would signify. I've just decided to step back, and admire how well made the cake is. No-Snark Sunday.....for an hour.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

As a red-headed, green-eyed, May baby, I say, "Yay! Yay! Yay!" I'm also glad it's not pistachio pudding green...bleh!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLorie

Emerald, cobalt (yes it's also a type of green), malachite, and forest green are my favorite shades. Granted emerald will be around more this year, but I wish I could find dark dark shades of green for clothes. Right now, a nice chunk of my wardrobe is Yoshi green and well, it's a lovely color, but I WANT DARK!

The lettuce cake is a little weird. Realistic, but really weird. Curious what it was made for. Bunny wedding, perhaps?

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKasey K

well...emerald green is fitting for today since all these cakes are gems.....

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

I absolutely love the Green Lantern cake! And the power rings on the table were a nice touch -- party favors for the guests?

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPurpleRanger

MLP:FIM's Spike would approve of the emerald cake (especially after last night's episode!)

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJungAndWilde

Yay! That's my birthstone too!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

I LOVE the hobbit cake! I am disappointed that the bakery that did it is not even on the same continent :( I also adore the Yoshi cake

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterelizabeth

Green is my most favorite color, and I love the dragon. Thanks for great Sunday sweets, again.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

Love it! (Also a May baby and also a proponent of colors that are real colors like emerald green).

My favorite is that the Ninja Turtles say "Happy 30th birthday." And the salad. I could eat that salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner ;)

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhyllis

Deep inside me, I secretly hope the salad cake is a miscommunication wreck. As in, we ordered a vegan-friendly cake and got a non-vegan cake decorated with vegetables.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

My favoutie colour is green - emerald, hunter, forest or malachite, especially. I agree with not liking the drab grey-green/khaki looks.

All these cakes are lovely. I especially like the dragon and Yoda - want both.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersamatwitch

I love emerald green (all the deep gemstone colors, really)!

@Kasey K I didn't know green could be described as "cobalt," too. Then I realized when I've used that word to describe blue it's always been as "cobalt blue" but I never thought about the phrase before! I knew it was on the periodic table but, 15 minutes later, I now know it was linked to the color blue in 1835 and came from German Kobalt, from Middle High German kobolt goblin; from the miners' belief that malicious goblins placed it in the silver ore . (gotta love dictionary.com and where it sends you!!)

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I saw the TMNT cake, and was all "what a lucky little....30 year old?" Hey, whatevs. Live like ya wanna, it's your birthday.

Love the Eye of Sauron cupcake! That deserves a squee.

The Starbucks cake looks good, but seems to be more fondant than cake.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal

I dearly love that Green Lantern cake. I imagine a cake-based Green Lantern would have the tastiest battles ever.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKMB

Hmmm ... there's just something I find weird (edging up toward disturbing?) about that salad cake, even if it's supposed to lettuce have fun ;)

On the other hand, my oldest son is turning 30 this year, and TMNTs were his very fav. thing for yrs. & yrs. In fact, they were also his 1st "concert", at age 5. I can think of nothing he'd like better for his big celebration!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterskitmom

It would be awesome if the "salad" cake was also vegan!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Yes, emerald is my birthmonth gemstone, too...and I have green eyes....and it's my favorite color. I like the muted and dark greens best, like sage green and hunter green, and there's something special about bottle green, none of the yellow greens.

Oh, this is a site about cakes? Got kinda distracted there...don't like cake. I mean to eat. I really love looking at beautiful cakes, though. Heck, I like looking at the Wrecks!

I don't think Jen has ever missed on Sunday Sweets - all of these are great.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Not a May baby (my dad is though), but as a redhead, I totally dig this year's official color! The cakes are nice too. ;)

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLizzyBean

If only the color was Hobbit door green. J.R.R. Tolekein would have been so proud. *snivel*

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAidan

What, no soylent green cakes?? Sad, I am!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNightSprite

I so want an emerald necklace just like the last cake, so pretty!! But where would I wear it? Dropping the kids off at school? Be a bit much maybe. Love emerald green, all greens really.

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAudreyinCanada

WOW!!!

January 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterConnie

@missalg: "His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad..."

I'm brown-eyed, and green is generally not my favorite color for wearing, but these cakes are making me think I should reconsider. After all, it works for Kermit. :)

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

Cool!! Today is all green!

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTammy

Years have colours, now...?

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVoiceMail

I love green! Greens are my favorite. I love all shades (although I am not crazy about mint green), so I love this Sweets post. I am a hazel-eyed January baby, but I love my birthstone, too. But emerald green is so pretty. I will be glad to see it make a comeback.

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNoelegy

I love the emerald cake and there's so much skill in some of the others too. That Yoda is amazing.

Origamislayer, I just did a Google Image search for Kermit cakes, there are some really good ones out there.

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJo

No matter how bad my day is (and the catastrophic failure of my car engine was VERY bad) I can come here and lift my spirits. I love that you also show very good cakes among the less than steller examples. Keep up the good work!!!!!!

January 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDebra

Emerald Green can come in many different shades... Nevertheless, good choice of color. I love Green.

January 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDottie

I too am a May Baby :) May 11. Turning 33. Kill me now.

Maybe I'll make my own cake...since you know...I do that on the side to make ends meet for this single mama2fourboys.

yeah..I'm crazy like that lol

January 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChantal

TARDIS Blue would have made much more sense, seeing as it's Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. I don't however, have any complaints. Green is my favorite color.
