March 18, 2012 I'm sure this will come as a complete shock to those of you who've just found this blog for the first time ever, but if there's one thing I love more than a geeky game-themed wedding, it's a geeky game-themed wedding cake.

It looks like those side invaders were made using the run-out, or flooding, technique, which is both time-consuming and extremely fragile. Color me impressed.
Not a wedding cake, but this is one of the best Angry Birds cakes I've seen in ages:

You can almost hear the high-pitched battle cries of the little blue birds, can't you? Echoing off the walls of your bathroom? It's ok, fellow addicts: you can admit it. (And you might as well, since that music is so loud you're not fooling anyone, John.)

I've yet to play Katamari Damacy, the game where you roll a ball around that makes everything - including people and buildings and such - stick to it, but I do love this custom wedding topper:

Now, ok, granted, we've seen better personality cores here on Sweets, but seriously, can you beat that presentation? I THINK NOT.
(For those of you completely lost right now, I have one word for you: PORTAL: GO PLAY IT.)
(Ok, that was four words. Whatever. I did it for science.)
I'm also seriously considering making a Portal dummy cake, just so I can hide things under it that I will dramatically reveal when we have company over, accompanied by a booming, "THE CAKE WAS A LIE, YOU FOOLS!!" because I guess now I'm channeling a little Cobra Commander, too. Huh.
Moving on.
It never fails to astound me just how difficult the seemingly-easy-to-replicate LEGO is to create in cake. Seriously. Bakers just can't seem to crack the code of straight edges and proportional pips*. Which is why I may have whisper-shouted, "YES! FINALLY!!" when I saw this cake:

I'm sorry to report that the only ones that I recognized in there were Mario, Space Invaders, Angry birds and Legos. Man, I need to get my geek on!
However, I must say that they all looked AWESOME, and that my personal favorite was the last lego one.
I'm a Portal fangirl. At first I thought, "That is a nice rendition of the chocolate cake." Then I squeed when I saw Wheatly under the cake that was a lie!
Lots of neat cakes, but I think the World of Warcraft groom's cake is unbelievable!!
That LEGO construction cake is amazing. I hate to say it, but I've become almost jaded against fondant cakes--I love seeing one that does something really creative and different.
Also Katamari Damacy is THE BEST and you should definitely play it! I can hear the La-lalalalalala-la's now...

Oh my, those lego cakes! I can't even imagine how to make those. Fantastic! As are, of course, the rest of the nerdiness. That Wind Waker cake is so adorable! And it makes me want to finish the game (which is saying something, because sailing in that game loses its novelty after about 5 minutes and is a major pain).

Forgive me for this, but I have noooo idea what Katamari Damacy is... I just want to know about the kitty in that picture -- is she made of cake too?? :) Also, the Lego cakes are super-awesome!

Every time I looks at Sunday Sweets I tell myself I'm going to have to learn to do fondant. Getting the colors right would seem to be the biggest challenge (I'm pretty good with 'clay' already.) I've had a roller and tools since before these styles were even popular. And my last attempt at a piped ninja turtle cake was such a disaster that I totally owe my 20 year old an awesome cake for his big birthday next year.
I would hate to get a cake like these, because I would totally be unable to cut into it. The cake made of cake LEGO is perfection. Frosting peeled back to reveal the LEGO innards? OMG.

I totally oooo'd when i saw the zelda cake. We are a zelda loving family, and i made quite a few geeky- themed cakes myself, but this i'll never be able to pull of. Wow!

I used a similar lego cake to make my son's 10th birthday cake. A Star Wars Lego cake. With homemade marshmallow fondant, which tastes SO much better than real fondant. Kind of melty marshmallow. It rolled out better than fondant. The cake itself was a checkerboard cake. AND it was very easy. But SO impressive!

For the record--and not to nit-pick (like that would ever occur here)--my two Zelda geeks took one look at the Zelda cake and said, "Technically that's not Zelda with Link. It's Tetra, an alter ego of Zelda."
It looked like Zelda to me. :-)
My cake made it on cakewrecks - my life is complete!! Katarmari Damacy is a fantastic game and really great to just sit down and play after a long day of work. I love rolling up the people because they scream lol!! The Kitty is actually a coin bank but she was there in honor of my cat that had passed away whom I had the honor of taking care of (and being taken care of) for 18 years. thanks so much for posting it:)
I loved the secound lego cake. My son is all about legos and has been most of his life. I wish I could afford to get a professional cake like that made for him for his birthday. I know he would love it. I think next year he is getting a Star Wars cake though because he is really getting into Star Wars. I liked some of the other themed ones but some of it I had never head of. Guess I don't get around much. lol

The cake made from the little Lego blocks uses equal quantities of red, yellow, green, and blue bricks. That's not the sort of color assortment you get when you buy real Lego blocks, but rather the sort of cheap imitation Legos used by low-budget corporations like Google:

Wow, I'm honored! Thanks for featuring my Portal cake(s!) here; I've always loved this blog!
I'm pretty shy about being featured among these other works of art in this post, though - this was only my third(?) attempt at fondant and so it's pretty obvious I'm not great at it. But thank you for the kindness!
To answer the question about what I used to keep the outer 'cake' from being sticky: store-bought frosting applied directly to the cardboard framework, and about one night's open-air drying time. :)
BTW, I'd better not let my son see that Lego cake or I'll have to get a whole lot better at fondant by the summer!
OMG! Katamari fangirl here! I LOVE that Katamari cake!!! And, the Link and Zelda cake was awesome! My fiance is a big Warcraft fan and got a kick out of the WoW cake. Clever Portal cake, too!
So my eleven-year-old daughter and I don't usually look at the Sunday Sweets because we just really enjoy the funny stuff. But when we logged on, and it was Sunday, we went ahead. I have just had to sit and listen to stories about games that I know nothing about....but boy was she impressed!

ZELDA!! <3 I'm a rabid Zelinker. I plan that, if I ever get married, I will have a Link & Zelda topper. And gown and green suit.
So Awesome, I wish I had thought of an "out of the box" wedding cake when I was getting married. It never occured to me!! But, in my defense, my husband and I didn't realize our common nerdiness until after we were married and we started playing all the Zelda games together. We "took turns" (I did ok in the really old ones but my turns got shorter and shorter as the games got more technical and slightly creepy. I would never survive bioshock) For our 50th anniversary I am totally having Link and Zelda perched on top of our cake, but one of the older versions. Well, either that or Paper Mario and Paper Peach.
Love that Wind Waker cake! And now I have the game music playing through my head. xD The intricacy of that Katamari Damacy cake is impressive. o_o Love the little flowers. My youngest brother would love either the Mario cake or the Lego-cake-in-construction cake. Two of his favorite things growing up. : 3 Such talented cake decorators!
I'm not much of a geek (I can't get beyond the first screen of Portal); I Hate the idea of theme weddings; but these are some majorly wonderful cakes. The lego cake was so cool (okay, I love legos) and the Katamari cake would make a beautiful birthday cake with different figures on the top.

Katamari is AMAZING. I'm not a big Playstation fan, but when we got one as a wedding gift (oh yes, our friends rock) I immediately ran out and bought Katamari for it!

That Lego cake is truly amazing does anyone know of a way to get one of those. I have afriend whose 5 year old is in the hospital with Aplastic Anemia and his favorite thing in the world right now is Legos. I would love to try and find something like that for him he would love it. Don't have a lot of money though.
