What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Play With Your Food!

I'm sure this will come as a complete shock to those of you who've just found this blog for the first time ever, but if there's one thing I love more than a geeky game-themed wedding, it's a geeky game-themed wedding cake.

BEHOLD!

Submitted by Lee F. & made by Cake Freak. Pics by Whitney Lee Photography

A Scribblenauts wedding cake? Complete with cameos by Super Mario and Donatello from TMNT? BE STILL MY 90's-LOVING HEART.

And speaking of Mario, you just can't get more classic than the diminutive plumber with his Princess Bride Peach:

Made by Amber C.; Photo by Marah Grant Photography

Wuv. Twuu Wuv...

Or, if you want to go really old school, you could always have a Space Invaders groom's cake:

Sub'd by Stephen J. & made by Premier Pastry

It looks like those side invaders were made using the run-out, or flooding, technique, which is both time-consuming and extremely fragile. Color me impressed.

Not a wedding cake, but this is one of the best Angry Birds cakes I've seen in ages:

By Juicy Desserts

You can almost hear the high-pitched battle cries of the little blue birds, can't you? Echoing off the walls of your bathroom? It's ok, fellow addicts: you can admit it. (And you might as well, since that music is so loud you're not fooling anyone, John.)

And speaking of addiction... how about a World of Warcraft groom's cake?

By Cup a Dee Cakes

Now *that* is using photo paper right. Bakers, take a note.

I've yet to play Katamari Damacy, the game where you roll a ball around that makes everything - including people and buildings and such - stick to it, but I do love this custom wedding topper:

By Lauren U.

The bride and groom are stuck to the rolly ball! Ha! It doesn't hurt that the cake is seriously cute, too.

Ok, time to fess up to another of my addictions:

Cake.

BWAHAHAHAA!

Just kidding.*

(*I'm not kidding.)

Yeah, you could say the cake was a lie.

Kind of like this awesome-beyond-words dummy cake...

Submitted by Noelle R. and made by Melissa

Which lifts up to reveal...

Wheatley!

Now, ok, granted, we've seen better personality cores here on Sweets, but seriously, can you beat that presentation? I THINK NOT.

(For those of you completely lost right now, I have one word for you: PORTAL: GO PLAY IT.)

(Ok, that was four words. Whatever. I did it for science.)

I'm also seriously considering making a Portal dummy cake, just so I can hide things under it that I will dramatically reveal when we have company over, accompanied by a booming, "THE CAKE WAS A LIE, YOU FOOLS!!" because I guess now I'm channeling a little Cobra Commander, too. Huh.

Moving on.

It never fails to astound me just how difficult the seemingly-easy-to-replicate LEGO is to create in cake. Seriously. Bakers just can't seem to crack the code of straight edges and proportional pips*. Which is why I may have whisper-shouted, "YES! FINALLY!!" when I saw this cake:

Submitted by Rebecca K. and made by Roy's Bakery

Perfection.

(*"Proportional Pips" is the name of my Rockettes cover band. And don't tell me the Rockettes aren't actually a band, because that joke was awesome.)

And now I shall segue from a cake LEGO to a cake *made* of cake LEGO:

Submitted by JC R. and made by Sometimes I Bake

I know: totally meta.

And I love the little guy on the side installing the polka dots.

I'd also like to point out that this, like many of our Sweets, was made by a hobby baker. So take heart, cake lovers! It CAN be done!

And finally, let's wrap up the geekiness with another classic character wedding cake:

By Little Cherry Cake Company

LINK!!

Ok, so this is actually themed to a newer installment of Zelda called The Wind Waker, but still. Just look at the water ripples around the little fish on the cake board. LOOK AT THEM. And the teensy flowers! And the adorable Link & Zelda topper! Game on, people. GAME ON.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

OMG the lego construction cake was awesome-love it :D

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

All of those cakes were absolutely spiffy (Scribblenauts + Scott Pilgrim = win!), but that Zelda one at the end just plain made my day. So thanks for showing me. :)

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterme

*fangirling* Ahhhhhh! Legend of Zelda! Legend of Zeldaaaaaa!!!!

I squealed when I saw that :3 it's amazing!

Thanks cakewrecks :D

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterElsie

I'm sorry to report that the only ones that I recognized in there were Mario, Space Invaders, Angry birds and Legos. Man, I need to get my geek on!
However, I must say that they all looked AWESOME, and that my personal favorite was the last lego one.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlien Girl

I'm a Portal fangirl. At first I thought, "That is a nice rendition of the chocolate cake." Then I squeed when I saw Wheatly under the cake that was a lie!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Lots of neat cakes, but I think the World of Warcraft groom's cake is unbelievable!!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaron

That LEGO construction cake is amazing. I hate to say it, but I've become almost jaded against fondant cakes--I love seeing one that does something really creative and different.
Also Katamari Damacy is THE BEST and you should definitely play it! I can hear the La-lalalalalala-la's now...

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzombiekim

WOW!!!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConnie

Oh my, those lego cakes! I can't even imagine how to make those. Fantastic! As are, of course, the rest of the nerdiness. That Wind Waker cake is so adorable! And it makes me want to finish the game (which is saying something, because sailing in that game loses its novelty after about 5 minutes and is a major pain).

Yay!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGail

Forgive me for this, but I have noooo idea what Katamari Damacy is... I just want to know about the kitty in that picture -- is she made of cake too?? :) Also, the Lego cakes are super-awesome!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDebbie

I will never ever ever get tired of these gamer-themed Sweets posts. Always chock-full of delicious awesomeness (and the cakes look yummy too).

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterE.

Is that, or is that not, Stephen Colbert next to Donatello on the first cake?

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterK`shandra

Every time I looks at Sunday Sweets I tell myself I'm going to have to learn to do fondant. Getting the colors right would seem to be the biggest challenge (I'm pretty good with 'clay' already.) I've had a roller and tools since before these styles were even popular. And my last attempt at a piped ninja turtle cake was such a disaster that I totally owe my 20 year old an awesome cake for his big birthday next year.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

I would hate to get a cake like these, because I would totally be unable to cut into it. The cake made of cake LEGO is perfection. Frosting peeled back to reveal the LEGO innards? OMG.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEsty

Yep, saw Colbert there, too!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMrsthallium

I wanna know what she used on the outside of the dummy cake so her fingers didn't stick during the big reveal :) That cake is seriously awesome.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

I totally oooo'd when i saw the zelda cake. We are a zelda loving family, and i made quite a few geeky- themed cakes myself, but this i'll never be able to pull of. Wow!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPien

sooo cool!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTina

Yep, that's gotta be Colbert on the bottom of that first one!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

The World of Warcraft cake totally rules. That is all. :-)

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I used a similar lego cake to make my son's 10th birthday cake. A Star Wars Lego cake. With homemade marshmallow fondant, which tastes SO much better than real fondant. Kind of melty marshmallow. It rolled out better than fondant. The cake itself was a checkerboard cake. AND it was very easy. But SO impressive!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Is this cake a lie?

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMummygadgetgeek

Great cakes! Love the Portal dummy cake!

For the record--and not to nit-pick (like that would ever occur here)--my two Zelda geeks took one look at the Zelda cake and said, "Technically that's not Zelda with Link. It's Tetra, an alter ego of Zelda."

It looked like Zelda to me. :-)

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

My cake made it on cakewrecks - my life is complete!! Katarmari Damacy is a fantastic game and really great to just sit down and play after a long day of work. I love rolling up the people because they scream lol!! The Kitty is actually a coin bank but she was there in honor of my cat that had passed away whom I had the honor of taking care of (and being taken care of) for 18 years. thanks so much for posting it:)

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

I loved the secound lego cake. My son is all about legos and has been most of his life. I wish I could afford to get a professional cake like that made for him for his birthday. I know he would love it. I think next year he is getting a Star Wars cake though because he is really getting into Star Wars. I liked some of the other themed ones but some of it I had never head of. Guess I don't get around much. lol

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerrie

LOOKIT THE TOAD. LOOKIT IT. DID YOU LOOK? Liar. It's. So. Cute. SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNo Name

The cake made from the little Lego blocks uses equal quantities of red, yellow, green, and blue bricks. That's not the sort of color assortment you get when you buy real Lego blocks, but rather the sort of cheap imitation Legos used by low-budget corporations like Google:

http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/voy/museum/pictures/display/0-4-Google.htm

(That's the reason the Google logo is in those four colors.)

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKibo

Wow, I'm honored! Thanks for featuring my Portal cake(s!) here; I've always loved this blog!

I'm pretty shy about being featured among these other works of art in this post, though - this was only my third(?) attempt at fondant and so it's pretty obvious I'm not great at it. But thank you for the kindness!

To answer the question about what I used to keep the outer 'cake' from being sticky: store-bought frosting applied directly to the cardboard framework, and about one night's open-air drying time. :)

BTW, I'd better not let my son see that Lego cake or I'll have to get a whole lot better at fondant by the summer!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa D

OMG! Katamari fangirl here! I LOVE that Katamari cake!!! And, the Link and Zelda cake was awesome! My fiance is a big Warcraft fan and got a kick out of the WoW cake. Clever Portal cake, too!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

So my eleven-year-old daughter and I don't usually look at the Sunday Sweets because we just really enjoy the funny stuff. But when we logged on, and it was Sunday, we went ahead. I have just had to sit and listen to stories about games that I know nothing about....but boy was she impressed!

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

Love, love, LOVE the gaming cakes, but doesn't ANYone make a Kingdom Hearts cake??

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

ZELDA!! <3 I'm a rabid Zelinker. I plan that, if I ever get married, I will have a Link & Zelda topper. And gown and green suit.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSage

So Awesome, I wish I had thought of an "out of the box" wedding cake when I was getting married. It never occured to me!! But, in my defense, my husband and I didn't realize our common nerdiness until after we were married and we started playing all the Zelda games together. We "took turns" (I did ok in the really old ones but my turns got shorter and shorter as the games got more technical and slightly creepy. I would never survive bioshock) For our 50th anniversary I am totally having Link and Zelda perched on top of our cake, but one of the older versions. Well, either that or Paper Mario and Paper Peach.

March 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

Love that Wind Waker cake! And now I have the game music playing through my head. xD The intricacy of that Katamari Damacy cake is impressive. o_o Love the little flowers. My youngest brother would love either the Mario cake or the Lego-cake-in-construction cake. Two of his favorite things growing up. : 3 Such talented cake decorators!

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I'm not much of a geek (I can't get beyond the first screen of Portal); I Hate the idea of theme weddings; but these are some majorly wonderful cakes. The lego cake was so cool (okay, I love legos) and the Katamari cake would make a beautiful birthday cake with different figures on the top.

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

This was a triumph
I'm making a note here
HUGE SUCCESS

Sorry, I really couldn't help myself and goodness I must be a gigantic nerd since I knew all the games!

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPam

makes me want to get married again just to have a cuter cake, and maybe a richer husband. (god I hope he doesn't read here)

I want to get married again and have a geeky cake!! All of my siblings are going the traditional cake route :(

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

WOW! I woke up yesterday to find our World of Warcraft cake featured here. I pop back in today and see lots of people commenting really enjoyed it! Jen, John, and all your great readers just made my week (if not my year)! Thanks!!

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen @ Cup a Dee Cakes

The cat on the Katamari Damacy one, is that made of cake too? Sunday Sweets being what they are, we can't always tell.

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

If i had to pick my fav 1 it defiantly be the angry birds cake by far my favorite!!!!!! but the 2nd Lego cake was AWESOME!!! Luv it! B-)

March 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAubree B

Katamari is AMAZING. I'm not a big Playstation fan, but when we got one as a wedding gift (oh yes, our friends rock) I immediately ran out and bought Katamari for it!

March 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSam H

Omg! Just plain adorbs!

March 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIhluvkittehs

Maybe my favorite Sweets post (or at least very high on the list). yes, I KIND OF had an attack when the Zelda cake came up. So.... so.... cute.

March 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerra

Is that Sex Bob-omb (from Scott Pilgrim) on the first cake?

March 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

My friends and I have been following your website from the beginning. You make us laugh not only with the cakes but the commentary!

March 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBabs

Ahhh! A Zelda cake! Now we just need people to round out the whole series, and then I can die in fan-girl bliss.

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKatie C.

I would argue with The Wind Waker being a newer zelda installment, it's from 2003!

Still think of it as new though... still think of the number 2003 as a couple of years ago in my head. Where did the years go?!

Beautiful cakes!

I love your wrecksplace, been reading it for years. You are spectacular and sometimes you make me gigglesnort out loud, out my nose. All sorts of things. Juice, water, tea... I'm sorry, that's disgusting :(

love you

April 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTora

That Lego cake is truly amazing does anyone know of a way to get one of those. I have afriend whose 5 year old is in the hospital with Aplastic Anemia and his favorite thing in the world right now is Legos. I would love to try and find something like that for him he would love it. Don't have a lot of money though.
