Sunday Sweets: Snow Day
December 30, 2012 Remember when you were a kid, and you'd look out the window on the way to bed, and it would be snowing?

Great big flakes.
And you hoped it would snow A LOT, but you didn't want to jinx it, and then when you woke up there was snow everywhere?
;)
That deep, fluffy snow that coated everything and made you want to run outside and make forts and snow angels?
But first, you crawled back into your warm bed for a while,

because how often did you get to sleep late on a school day, after all?
And when you finally got out of bed, you threw on your boots,

And you realized you were cold and wet, so you went inside, flung off your wet winter clothes,

They're all spectacular, but I LOOOOVE that there's a buttercream cake included this week! Kudos to Wedding Cakes for You for that beauty!
I loved this! And I appreciate that it was ... well, sweet. The past few Sunday Sweets have been a little snarky & jokey, which during the week I kind of expect on here. But, until recently, the Sunday Sweets were always positive and gushy about the cakes, without the snark or complaints. Didn't realize how much I missed the positive happy stuff 'til it was gone! Here's to keeping Sunday Sweets, sweet!
The Calvin & Hobbes cupcakes rawk! So much want there.
I grew up (& still live) in Florida so have never experienced any of this. :(
Our only closed days involved hurricanes or other severe weather, so no going outside for those.
The little girl and her dog is sooo sweet :D and I love the calvin and hobbs cupcakes XD the rest of them are just amazing :)
These cakes are just so awesomely cool, they almost make me wish for snow.
Almost.
Then again we have about six inches of the white stuff on the ground right now, and my hopes for a mild winter have pretty much been dashed. I'm already counting the days to summer :P

A lot of my friends will have their children wear their pajamas to bed inside out and flush ice cubes down the toilet as their "Snow Dance." So cute!
Another Floridian here, so rare is the day that it would snow. (That is to say, once when I was school-aged, and that's it.) And it was winter vacation anyway, so...
This was my childhood, to a T. Loved it!

Yeah, Jamie, you weren't the only one expecting a "me neither" at the bottom :) I grew up in Louisiana, so there was no chance of ever having such a wonderful snow day. But we did have hurricane days :D

Sounds like a lovely day! Since I grew up in the Phoenix area I never experienced any of that, but always wished I had the chance!

Gorgeous cakes this week, and the wrecks from last week were particularly hysterical, especially the post set to Jingle Bell Rock.
I had a snow day a little over a week ago, on Thursday. It was especially nice because it was the second last day before winter break, and then the next day there was a two hour delay. It was great, even if we did lose power Thursday night. Seriously though, snow days and then the days when it's too cold for school are AMAZING. Hurray for Wisconsin weather!

What a delightful Sunday Sweets today! Growing up in Wisconsin provided many of these wonderful snow days...though this was long before Calvin and Hobbes and video games.... It was time of sliding down a hill on a piece of cardboard, or the metal lid of a garbage can, and skating at the local rinks the city created, and making snow angels and snowmen (with real coal eyes) and yes, daring each other to touch your tongue on a metal pole without getting it stuck there.... Yup, hot chocolate helped with the thawing as wet clothing dripped and dried on a clothes rack placed in the bathtub. It was a wonderful time....

L., from what I can determine, they aren't professional decorators. While the Calvin and Hobbes copyright is very strict, he can't expect fans not to make decorated cupcakes for their own personal consumption if they choose to. He can, however, forbid them to sell those cupcakes. Whether he should be able to influence whether the pictures can be posted as part of a personal blog is debatable, but I suspect it would be a long court battle for not a whole lot of benefit.
Very cute sweets post, Sharyn! Though you clearly had more fun on snow days than we did. We did the playing outside and sledding, and the cocoa, but didn't have a place to ice skate (or a Nintendo. My snow days may have been before Nintendo. Can't quite remember).
We don't get snow days in Alaska. They just delay it an hr or two while they plow the roads. >.<
@mel -- you can't beat that Wisconsin snow... And now I live in a place where it usually melts in a day, so I've had the best of both worlds.
Do I remember any of that?
...No. I never never built a snow-family, had a candy cane or a knitted scarf, drunk cocoa an open fireplace, played video-games, read C+H, or went ice-skating. Or had any friends to do any of that with, come to think of it. So that just made me depressed.
That was one of my favorite posts of yours, though I do love many and get a great laugh out of others.
As someone who grew up in South Florida, when there were no video games, I have to say, the answer to every question is, "no."

"Me, neither." Snow is great fun to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Not complaining, just observing.

Oooo! If you've never done any of these things, now's the time! After Christmas sales make already cheap candy canes cost almost nothing, and they make the best hot chocolate stirrers. Assuming you live in a country which celebrates
Christmasafter-Christmas sales, of course.Hurrah for snow cakes! We just got about 6 inches up here in Connecticut, so it's a proper New England winter. Snow is so beautiful that I still love it even now that I'm a grownup and I have to shovel the driveway and sidewalk.
I had exactly one snow experience, and I was too young to remember it. I have pictures, that's the only way I know it happened.
But omg those Calvin and Hobbes cupcakes!! AMAZING!! .... I now must go dig out my C&H books and re-read them.

I remember doing all that stuff except for the ice skating, but I never had snow days. We lived in Chicago - We had the blizzard of '79 one day and went to school the next. The only reason I think we didn't go to school is because I think the blizzard happened on a weekend.

I grew up in the Sacramento valley of California, so I didn't have snow days. Then, 12 years ago, I moved to Michigan, and then to Ohio, and have become a bit of a snow bunny. These cakes are beautiful! Too bad they don't close school on account of prettiness. ;)
Beautifully written Sharyn! And yeah, I remember all of those things! We had the best hill in front of our house. And a nice warm fire with plenty of hot chocolate :)
I currently have our first big flat flakes of the season falling outside my window. My 13 yr old has been out of school for 3 weeks on vacation. If this stuff sticks around and they extend "vacation" someone will pay!!!

I live in Australia, so... No, never. XD And I was also expecting a 'Me neither' at the bottom. Haha.
Too bad I missed the day this went up, so probably none of you are even going to read this now, but if it makes all you southerners feel any better, a lot of kids growing up in the north right now aren't going to experience much of this either. I grew up in PA (just moved to Florida, though, so my kids might end up in the same boat you guys are) and by the time I was in high school, they just plain gave up on snow days. Unless it was a blizzard, we had a two hour delay (enough time for them to make sure the roads were plowed) and then school as usual. It went from like five snow days a year (and not a single time of actually getting all of spring break, since we had to make up the snow days) to maybe one a year if we were lucky.
The last cake would be my daughter's ideal birthday cake. She's a figure skater, who loves purple.
