What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: ...And Everything Nice

Rock-a-bye reader, on the laptop
did a week's worth of wreckage
make your jaw drop?

Your brain might be scarred,
with stunned disbelief,
so let today's Sweets
bring you blessed relief!

That's right, it's the sweetest-themed sweets of all: baby showers! Prepare for a mass cuteness attack.

Submitted by Jen C. & made by Sharon Wee Creations

I don't know how Noah's ark came to be synonymous with babies, other than all the animals supposed to be having babies, I guess, but it sure makes for an adorable cake! The rhinos are my favorite!

You know what else is adorable? Bears in a balloon basket.

By Sweet Tiers

"Ooh, Honey Bear, I just felt the baby kick!"

And speaking of kicks, check out the sweet pair atop this cake. I don't care how tough you are, if you cradle your hands around a tiny pair of baby shoes, you are going to squeal aloud. And if you happen to be pregnant and hormonal, you may also cry.

Sub'd by Julia D. & made by Johannas Tartor

Respect the baby shoe.

Sub'd by Nicole B. & made by The Cake Boutique

I love the different color vibe of this one. Minty green, deep chocolate and orange? How unexpectedly awesome! See, not all baby shower cakes have to be covered in pastel ribbons and roses.

But then again, you won't hear me complaining if they are! After all, this next cake is an explosion of pastel ribbons and roses, and it's amazing.

By Sweet Irene

And here's another be-ribboned beauty:

By Rosey Confectionery Sugar Art

Oh yeah, I'm firmly on the ribbon and rose wagon. Heck, I'm driving the wagon. This cake's so perfect and precise I can barely believe it was made by a human.

Now here's a cake sure to please any expectant mother about to 'pop!'

Sub'd by Tanya F. & made by Sugar Creations

But you probably shouldn't say anything like that to her, nor jokingly compare her size to a circus tent, or even innocently mention the word "elephant." When I was pregnant, my husband accidentally said 'cellulite' when he meant to say 'saline' and I didn't talk to him for five days.

But getting back to the cake: do take note of the little 3D detailing on the elephant's ears!

Owl bet you've never seen a sweeter little cake than this:

Sub'd by Cathy B. & made by Terry D.

This is too much for words. I'm sitting here with a goofy smile on my face, trying to absorb all the cuteness. Woodland creatures! A baby owl with his mommy and daddy! I want to push that knife off the table so nothing can ever harm them!

And because we can never have too many birds on cakes, or butterflies, buttons and balls... (um, let's just call them dots), and flowers for that matter, behold:

By Andrea's SweetCakes

Love it. Sydney is a blessed girl! I hope they save her a piece!

And finally, this next cake makes me want to go back in time, become a rock star, have a baby, name that baby something trendy and nonsensical like "Pumpkin Drizzle Gables," and throw a baby shower with all my cool rock-n-roll friends, for no other reason than to roll out this super-star worthy cake:

By Little Cherry Cake Company

Rock on, baby. ROCK ON.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

OMG those cakes make me wanna SQUEE :D

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

See? SEE?? Even you wanted to push the knife off the table too.

Some cakes should never be eaten.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

Thanks for the super cute way to start my Sunday morning!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterK

I'm glad I can't get preggers any more, I'd have to have one of each.

Those aren't marbles, their pop blocks- the kind kids make necklaces out of. I'm sticking with that. And the owls are just too cute to eat.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterev

I love the baby animals on Noah's Ark. There is just something so cute about those little animals bobbing around on a boat ride together in that picture.
I never thought much about owls as decorations for kid's cakes and rooms, but they have been quickly growing on me. I saw a girls' quilt in Pottery Barn yesterday witha pastel owl and it was really sweet. Those cake owls are adorable!
The chocolaty cake resembles felt art that you see as illustrations in some kids' books. That's really well done. I am in awe of these bakers' skills!

#3: Who in their right mind puts a clothesline as decoration on a cake.
#6: Why does it say Now Baby on the cake? Is that an order for the new infant to start slicing the cake.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew

I am due in April, and each of those made me go "awww..... I want THAT one!" My favorite was the green & brown one... which will (likely) be the theme for the nursery for our little boy. Love it!!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSerena

Noah's Ark is usually used as a theme for twin, or multiple, babies/pregnancies.....Two-By-Two....get it? Also, THE OWLS! OMG!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNotDeadYet

I knew I'd seen those woodland creatures before (without the panda) and after too much googling, I found Carter's Forest Friends.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarilee J. Layman

I think part of the appeal of Noah's Ark for baby stuff, is that it's one of the very few bible stories that's actually kid-friendly. Apart from the Nephilim, I mean. And all the people and animals that drowned. And Noah getting fall-down-drunk and being sexually assaulted by his own grandson. Aside from that, nothing but cute lil' aminals bobbin' up and down on a boat.

I love the tiny flowers around the base of the baby shoe/clothesline cake.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

@Matthew- most pregnant women reach a point where they want that baby out NOW. Showers are usually given before the birth so I'm guessing it's an order. Obey the Mama.

While I love the Noah cake (daittybittypinkpiggies!!) I think the owl cake is A.MAZE.ING. wow

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Balls = Spheres! Try that.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlz

@Matthew I says New Baby not Now Baby

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeah F.

Matthew: You put a clothes line on a cake when it has adorable little baby clothes on it. I love that cake. These are so awsome. They make me want to go to a baby shower.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvie_M

ooohhhh mmyyyyyy. those are so cuuteeee....

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

I feel so good looking at Nice cakes I wish we could look at Nice cakes all week.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

I can't decide which one I love more; Hugo's cake, the Owl Cake, or the Sugar and Spice cake. Wish I had seen this a few weeks ago for my best friends shower. So precious :)

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPourGirl

The cake for Hugo and the owl cake remind me of one of the cutest nurseries I've ever seen: http://sewliberated.typepad.com/sew_liberated/2009/04/finnians-montessori-room.html

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSMiaVS

@Mindy1: SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Those cakes are so SO CUTE!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVAL

I could never eat those last two cakes. Ever.

...

Kind of defeats the purpose of making cakes doesn't it?

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBetty

I love the Noah's Ark cake, but how much of it is really cake to eat? Not much.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKafenervosa

Am I bad person when I see the "explosion of pastel ribbons and roses" cake and immediately think about the wreck that will undoubtedly ensue when someone shows that cake to a wrecker and asks for one just like it?

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertabbycaat

@Matthew - I thought it said "now baby" too. TBH I don't like "new baby" that much either - as opposed to what, "old baby"????

As for the cakes - gorgeous sunday sweets as always.

Love the all out circus theme with the trailer in the back with the circus posters as well!!!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

"When I was pregnant, my husband accidentally said 'cellulite' when he meant to say 'saline' and I didn't talk to him for five days."
When you were pregnant? What am I missing here?!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

@Megan - I was wondering the same thing...
Maybe a pseudowriter for the blog today?

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

Megan and Michelle, I had the EXACT same thought! John and Jen - any enlightenment?

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnne S.

@Megan, i too was wondering the same thing! usually it says somewhere who is writing it, if it's not Jen. even JHOJ puts his name on it...hmmmm

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I love all of these- except they are too beautiful to eat

This is my first time catching your blog when you aren't featuring cake wrecks (I suppose they are credit card wrecks because I'm sure they all cost a bundle)

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpriest's wife

need. insulin.

seriously - you are my favorite site in the whole world.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeckyG

@Megan and Michelle, if you look just above the comments, beside the "Author" icon is the name Lindsey. This means Jen didn't write this post, Lindsey did.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEsty

To find out the author look at the end of the post: Lindsey | 25 Comments | tagged Sunday Sweets...

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterggperic

Lindsey wrote the post today. Not Jen!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDebbi

At the risk of starting an Epcot, the writer today is Lindsey, not Jen (or John, obviously). :)

The flicker pictures of the "new baby" decorator are amazing! (I went looking for a better shot to see if it was "new" or "now." It's definitely "new.")

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

@megan, michelle, anne s., the author if this blog was their go-to assistant lindsey.
You can tell who writes the blog by the cute little person logo and name beside it at the end of the post.

Lindsy - great sweets, they are gorgeous. Thanks for your assistance to Jen to keep this blog going.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDelight

Are you sure those were roses? I thought those were daisies. Maybe we should ask John(THOJ) what he thinks.

And all those cakes were much better than the "Slice Up The Baby and Eat Him/Her" themed cakes.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRanger

Wait, you were pregnant?? And since when do you refer to John as "my husband" and not just John?!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIris

I remember seeing those "balls" on an episode of "Cake Boss" on Netflix. I think he called them "edible beads".
Thank you for another wonderful Cake Wrecks. I don't know if the wrecks or the success are more fun to look at but the text you include makes the whole thing wonderful to read. I am so glad I stumbled across your blog. Thank you for sharing.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

Oh my grass, I can't believe I just became part of an Epcot. *dies of shame* I didn't realize Lindsey was a regular contributor. Thowwy. :(

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmbarrassed Iris

a) What's the cream shape with orange things and black dots to the right on the Hugo cake? I'm assuming some animal but I just can't see it.
b) Sydney is a city in Australia, Sidney is a man's name.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymaz

@ Diddleymaz. I think "the cream shape with orange things and black dots" on Hugo's cake is a squirrel. Either that or a hand puppet.

Sydney can also be a girl's name. My niece, for example.

On the Noah's ark cake, it's the elephant that gets me. The elephant with the round Dumbo ears, the itty bitty eyes and the BIG behind. Love it.

What's wrong with an Epcot? Sometimes it's fun to jump in if you make it clear you're doing it on purpose. Good job today, Lindsey. Though for a second I was startled enough to think, "But....but... Jen said she has no kids!"

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterteabunny

Oh my gosh, How do they do it???? I can't decide which is my favorite!!!
Love Sunday Sweet Treats!!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShauna PI

Oh my gosh! These cakes make me want to go to baby shower just to see one of these. And that is saying alot!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKKM

Well that was a great post for this Gramma-to-be! Thanks Lindsey!

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

All the cakes are great!

@Diddleymaz, I have a 24 year-old female cousin named Sydney and I know younger girls named that also.

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKorenyx

Beautiful...but where are the wrecks? Am I on the wrong page?

January 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAbbyroad

The Doctor always refers to them as "edible ball bearings"

these cakes are so adorable! I love the one for Sydney the best. :)

January 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvie

Sweet Irene's cake blew my mind!
But now I need some black coffee and a nice sour dill pickle to counteract all the sugar, or I'll be useless at work today...

January 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlondie's Mom

So cute, I can only imagine your dream baby cake, carrot jockeys and all!

Hi, it's me Lindsey! Thanks for the kind comments! I'm a regular contributor here on Sunday Sweets, and yes, I have three kids and a husband named Matt! You can read a little more about me here, if you are so inclined! http://www.cakewrecks.com/about/

January 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

Trust me dear american friends Sydney is NOT a girls name here, its one of those were people go They called her WHAT??
