What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

This Makes My Brain Hurt

Thanks for that arrow pointing to the "h," though. That clears it alllll up.

Thanks to Steve A., who thinks this cake is perfectly justified.

Maybe...Happy Birthday, Walt! George Retired! (You know, like THAT's his birthday present?!)

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMommaLysh

Oh my.... I spent far too long trying to work this one out!! Re-read it like 20 times!!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSelina

Walt is happy that George retired, and it is also Walt's birthday. And George likes the letter H. It's brilliant!!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShanan

Left justifiled?

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJane

Uh, walt's birthday & George retired and they were too cheap for 2 cakes?

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

What I think they're trying to say is...Happy Birthday, George....oh and by the by, Walt retired!

No? Then I got nothing.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkaisee

My guess is that Walt is retiring, and it's George's birthday. But really, who knows.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristy

The only way this is justified is the way the font all start from the LEFT.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaster of Aeons

who what now?

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterspel chek

What is this, I don't even...

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMs. MM

I'd say it's more ragged right.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

I am not 100% sure whether that says "retired" or "refired"...

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCat

I got it! it was a cake celebrating both Walt's birthday and George's retirement, but then they found out it was George's birthday also, so they called back the bakery, which didn't want to redo the letters, so the bakery just put an arrow from George to Birthday to indicate it's George's birthday also.

Yeah, that's it.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFlower Girl

What...? Do we have any idea of what it's supposed to say? Is it Walt's birthday? Is George retired AND a birthday boy? I'm so confused...

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDale

It's very simple, really. "Walt, Happy Birthday. As a present to you, I would like to announce that your longtime rival for the editor's job, George Birthday, has retired."

I'm sure that's what they meant to say.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCindy

I think it's supposed to say something close to "Happy Birthday George and Happy Retirement Walt".

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMegan D

Cake decorator, squinting at pencil scrawl on the back of a crumpled up liquor store receipt: "Ahh, crap... this was supposed to say, 'Happy Birthday, Walt & George'. What in the flip was I *hic* thinkin', drinkin' another halfa box of *hic* wine before I started this thing. I'm such a frickin' procrastin' *hic* procrastin' *hic* procrastin' *hic* putter-offer. Ah, eff it, I'm *hic* retiring..."

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I think this is "exactly" what the order form looked like. My guess is Walt retired on George's birthday and they were trying to save money by combining celebrations... Well, they'll think twice next time!!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

I think it's a bad sign that I can look at wrecks like this and pretty much pick out what the order was SUPPOSED to be. I have been decorating at Wal-mart for far too long.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterUmmeiko

Brain...overload!! Ouch!!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa P.

Wishing Walt a Happy George? Maybe if George's last name is Johnson?

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEq4bits

It's official: I'm befuddled.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterelissa

And, what's up with the camera angle? :)

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDW

It's like a wheel of fortune game! Walt Happy Birthday, Happy birthday George H. (explains the arrow) George (no H) Retired. It's 3 cakes in one!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMisty Dawn

Brain...broke...can't make sense of it

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Clearly,........ Walt! Happy Birthday! George H retired!
Inferred, Walt's present from the gang was George H's early retirement. They shoulda got him a gift card instead.
Perfect sense. ;)

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeanna

I had a Hardy Boys Code book when I was a kid, so I understand; it's in code. The arrow pointing to the "h" indicates where to begin. Properly deciphered it reads "Help. I'm trapped in this crumby bakery." (Note the hint, the crumb in the icing, on the lower right-hand corner of the cake.)

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Okay. I got it. Walt retired. George had a birthday and has a fetish for the letter 'h". Taa Daa!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermemyselfamirene

ooooohhhhhhh, George's birthday was retired!! R.I.P. George. Bad, Walt, for being happy about it!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Isn't this pretty self-explanatory?

Walt and George worked at the same company for years. George was the guy who always arranged for the birthday celebration cakes, thus he was nicknamed "Happy Birthday George." Unfortunately, Walt suspected George was NOT a straight arrow, and tried to get him fired for some shoddy business practices. However, his attempts to have George removed were in vain. In retaliation, "Happy Birthday George" NEVER ordered a cake for Walt's birthday. Each man grew to loathe the other, and it was a source of considerable tension in the workplace. Finally, George decided to retire. Knowing how happy it would make Walt, his co-workers couldn't wait to tell him, and they did it with cake to make up for all those years Walt went cakeless.

See? Obvious.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

It's justified, yes, left justified...

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShecky Greenish

Whaaa??? I'm speechless. I am without speech.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Great, now my headache is back! ;)

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSueP

I think your 'justified' joke may have gone over the head of some people commenting.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlli

Everytime I try to make sense of this cake, my eye starts to twitch. I would LOVE to see the order form, or hear what the cake was actually supposed to say. Seriously, WTF?

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

My theory: the word "Walt" is in the wrong place.
Happy Birthday George
Walt Retired.

Apparently, George didn't like Walt so his retiring was George's birthday present.
I have no explanation for the arrow.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentervonneybeth

Maybe it's George H. that retired? They shared Walt's cake apparently lol. Ah who knows this also hurts my brain.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

It appears a wreckporter has discovered the drama of the 'receding camera angle'. I could ask if 'mood lighting' is next, but there are already lots of examples.

Perhaps this is a transliteration of a to-do list. George has to get new tires, but before doing that, he needs to get Walt a 'Happy Birthday' cake. George also has to remember to say something snarky on it, like 'get the 'h' out'.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

How dare George put his birthday in the middle of Walt's retirement!

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJess

My guess: Cake decorating random word generator, preprogramed with the basics. They gave it a spin... and this is what it churned out.

Or the "decorator" was in a stream-of-consciousness kind of mood.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Sharyn, you are a genius! As always Jen, your commentary makes it. Before your input: "WHAAAAA?!" o.O After your input: "Hahahahahahaha! Oh that's good!"

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjubileegems

I actually know someone named Walt George. Now I'm wondering if he retired on his birthday.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterladycrim

This made my head hurt, too. Oh, my.

September 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh524

Kudos, Lisa and Sharyn! Can't decide which theory I like better... so I'll take 'em both!

This is one of the most' best confused cake I've seen here in a long time!!

October 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJolly

Sharyn took my answer.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarolyn

I read the arrow as saying that the "George" is in with the "Happy Birthday" part, but they couldn't fit it all on the one line on the order form. I'm wondering if the "Walt Retired" part was meant to be in a different size and/or colour to the "Happy Birthday George" part?

My take on this is that they're wishing George a happy birthday by giving him the good news that Walt has retired. Walt could be someone George knows on a personal level who he will be able to spend more time with now, or alternatively, Walt could be a colleague/boss who George doesn't like.
